What is Enhanced 911?
Enhanced 911 (or E911) is a VoIP service that allows IP and location data to connect users on a unified communications platform or on an enterprise campus to emergency services. The enhanced service automatically displays the telephone number and physical location of the person caller on the emergency operator’s screen.E911 services emerge as a response to FCC rule changes, in a stated attempt to improve the effectiveness of wireless 911 calls. Kari's Law, signed in during 2018, requires that outbound dialing MLTS must provide direct access to 911 service without the caller having to dial an initial number, digit, prefix or other access number before dialing 911. VoIP calls, which can make it difficult for emergency responders to locate callers without callers directly telling them their location, are not excluded from coverage by the law if arising from a fixed location.
E911 requirements present are said to present an obstacle to wider adoption of non-traditional IP-based or PBX technologies. So UCaaS and VoIP providers can avail themselves or offer to customers a couple of solutions. A PS-ALI (for private switch automation location identification) is an E911 solution for PBX systems allowing enterprises to provide secure databases used by emergency systems with adequately specific location information. Alternately, a VoIP Positioning Center (VPC) is an IP-based service that allows enterprises to upload phone with location data to a national ALI database, presenting an optimal choice for VoIP providers, and their users. Next Generation 911 (or NG911) is a nascent technology, conceived as allowing callers to send text or other media (e.g. video, images, etc.) via an all-IP E911. NG911 is not fully implemented by PSAPs, or communications providers.
Enhanced 911 Systems include the following identifiable features:
Dispatchable location information
GPS tracking
Caller identification
Compatibility with UCaaS and VoIP technology
Direct routing to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP)
Enhanced 911 Comparison
