Acunetix by Invicti vs. Tenable Nessus

Acunetix scales well from a small web development presence like ours to a full-scale enterprise focused on that. The various tools and sensors that provide assurance of the results and can give feedback down to the lines of code in the source are proof of this. Various integrations exist as well. The main thing for us is that it simplifies confirming and remediating potential issues in our code or proving that products we use have issues that we can then take to the vendor for correction.

Nessus is perfectly suitable for performing comprehensive vulnerability assessment scans being a vulnerability scanner. It is less appropriate for performing penetration testing since it is not a penetration testing tool, it does not have the ability and modules to exploit the vulnerabilities of the system.

• Easy to scan code and identify vulnerabilities

• Shows you how to fix certain vulnerabilities and the commands to run.
• Gives you the CVEs that the vulnerabilities are matched to.
• Easy to understand the vulnerabilities list, giving reasons why the issues need to be patched or fixed.

• Does not support multiple endpoints well (e.g. apps and services that do not reside at the same URL).
• Has authentication problems with modern enterprise apps which involve a lot of redirects to unrelated endpoints, federated IDs, SSO, etc. This is related to the first point.
• The vulnerability detection capability is not as robust as Burp Suite Pro + extensions, Metasploit + auxiliary modules, Nmap + scripts, etc.

Nessus is best and easy to use application for Vulnerabilities finding and reporting, it has multiple platforms and wide scope covering almost all devices for security improvement so far, thus we are very likely to continue its services.

Tenable Nessus is a great product and provides a lot of value, but it is difficult to set up and use and the amount of data it generates can be overwhelming. It does help us prioritize based on the severity of the detection, however there are sometimes mitigating factors that we have implemented that Nessus does not account for, which causes lots of noise in the reports.

I haven't needed to contact support yet. But issues are easily solved with a quick internet search which means support and by extension, the larger community are involved and knowledgeable.

In my opinion Acunetix fares good in DevSecOps pipeline better than Appspider. In terms of vulnerabilities scanning of dynamic applications I liked Rapid7, however we have better ROI with Acunetix. During 6 months of usage I tried to look into cost benefit analysis and could easily pick Acunetix and in terms of dashboards also I am impressed

Ease of deployment and use even for junior analysts, strong plugin support, and up-to-date CVE coverage, cost-effective licensing, especially for mid-size companies, and seamless integration with the SIEM tool. Overall, Nessus hit the right balance between functionality, performance, and total cost of ownership for our needs and usability.

• Saved money compared to other commercial scanners, especially over the long run.
• Scan speed seems to be pretty good compared to some of the bulkier commercial products out there. However, that largely has to do with proper configuration.
• A downside is that is requires a bit of extra work just to get it set up to scan APIs, web services, etc.
