Android vs. Oracle Solaris

Android is great if you are on a budget and can't purchase other operating systems for mobile devices. It is also great for installing third-party apps if you find one you like. Although there is a lot of customization options available, this may cause some users to become frustrated if they are unfamiliar with this system.

Oracle Solaris is great due to the fact that it actually is meant for high-end servers. Supports a wide range of hardware. The Stability of the solution is great. The documentation does not support some solutions, and there are no other options. Most of the product is still command-line, despite the fact that they've got a graphical user interface in some areas. For some reason, core administration is still done via command-line.

It is very easy to use and the customer user interface is very smooth and logical. Rarely do applications crash and need reinstallation. The app store is secure enough to prevent malicious software from being advertised and potentially downloaded. Rebooting devices does not have to be a regular occurrence so this allows for high availability.

There are a lot of people that use Android around the world. There are many forums and blogs that you can read about Android. It is too easy to find information about the system and for developers, it is too easy to create an app. For me, it is one of the best operating systems.

The support teams are well trained and responsive. Patches are rolled out regularly and are easy to deploy and backout.

Stress testing and timing is key. You need test systems that mirror the live environments. User testing must be reflected in peak loads.

These two operating systems are both great and can totally do everything that we need in our school. The reason we go with Android is that it is cheaper and we have a greater variety of apps available to us. iOS can be a little pricey and it also doesn't allow us to do the customization that we want.

Oracle Solaris is Scalable, have a good patching capability and secure by default. You want to have something that's up and running and stable, something that's not going to crash. But if we do have an issue, we can get somebody for technical support who can help us work through the problems.
