Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda Backup is far more simple and easy to manage, we selected this over competitors because it gave a simple set and forget backup for cloud to cloud with unlimited retention. It also gave a very simple to use interface for monitoring backups of required. Pricing and …
Chose Barracuda Backup
The comparable product has a more limited feature set, best used for desktop and limited flexibility
Chose Barracuda Backup
Overall not impressed with Barracuda backup and we decided to move away from it. I wasn't involved in the selection but the organization has had it for years when the market was very different.
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda Backup offers a full cloud to cloud offering and when we were implementing and building, Veeam did not have a full cloud to cloud offering, but rather a cloud to on prem, which we were concerned with the bandwidth usage and additional need to monitor as well as …
Chose Barracuda Backup
We actually ran both of these systems at once to provide end to end coverage. This worked extremely well for our internal email systems and provided great protection for our end users and great backups of all messages to and from the corporation. The combination of these two …
Chose Barracuda Backup
I [have] used a number of solutions in the past and in all cases I replaced what I used with the Barracuda solution. It was a simple and fast solution to deploy and easy to get staff up to speed on using the product. Support was top notch when deployment time came, they …
Chose Barracuda Backup
All solutions have their positive, neutral, and negative points. Veritas Backup Exec is excellent too. But it is more expensive and does not offer a management interface as friendly as Barracuda Backup is. We also have brand reliability because other company employees have also …
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda Backup compared very favorably to Veeam Backup & Replication because it has all of the most necessary features you would expect in a backup solution, but can be deployed much faster and is easier to manage. The Linux based appliance reduces the need for using a …
Chose Barracuda Backup
All mentioned venders above did not give me the one-stop-shop approach to backup that I was looking for. Also, global deduplication and compression was a huge saving on local space. Most venders also charge per VM or per application being backed up, and this is cost-prohibitive …
Chose Barracuda Backup
The time necessary to manage Barracuda Backups is leaps and bounds superior to Backup Exec. Backup Exec has tons of great features but required constant maintenance. In the end we just wanted the ability to easily schedule, set retention periods and the ability to backup and …
Chose Barracuda Backup
Dell/EMC CX4 series, Data Protector (formerly HP Data Protector), Quest Rapid Recovery (formerly AppAssure), Avamar and Veeam Backup & Replication
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda was a much more cost effective solution than the others we evaluated. Its interface was light years ahead of Avamar, and its cost was much lower than Unitrends. Avamar had it beat in backup time, and Unitrends was a more mature product. In the end, Barracuda won out …
Chose Barracuda Backup
We used to use a product that Symantec offered. The problem was that it was not able to connect to Mac machines to back up data. This was a big issue, since we have Executives and marketing employees that use Macs. We also tested Druva inSync. It offered a lot of features that …
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda has a lot of experience in the market, provides solutions that no other competitors have, and the support is very good
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda is easy to use with Cloud Control. I can manage ESS and their Archiver on one screen.
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda has been one of those must have tools for our IT shop. Quick, easy to use as well as safe and secure are a few ways to describe this product. Email archiving is made to keep your end users happy knowing that they have all of their past emails at their fingertips.
Chose Barracuda Backup
Each backup solution has its pros and cons, and each customer has their needs, and budget constraints. Barracuda Backup has helped us dramatically in the area of being able to provide customers a cost-effective solution, that's easy to manage and is one of those things you're …
Chose Barracuda Backup
We have used DATTO as well as Symantec Backup Exec. DATTO is 2X the cost of Barracuda for apples to apples specs. Also, we have not had good experiences with the DATTO (pushy) sales people. Backup Exec is a local on-premise product, when if you get a crypto infection it can …
Chose Barracuda Backup
While many solutions, such as Acronis and Symantec Backup Exec rely on number of agents or database services, Barracuda and Datto rely on total data storage. Barracuda's key feature is the hardware refresh. After 4 years of maintaining subscriptions, customers are entitled to …
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda's price point, and it didn't require additional servers and/or storage.
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda is MUCH easier to set up and use then Unitrends. Unitrends does not offer direct download of backed up files from their cloud, while Barracuda does. Unitrends uses a non-standard and difficult to use implementation of retention/archiving. Unitrends' backup to Amazon …
Chose Barracuda Backup
I'm much happier with how Barracuda lays out their console and user interface. Acronis is a great product and you do get what you expect. But to have a the learning curve personally cut by at least 50% is a great thing to have when it comes to training new members to the IT …
Chose Barracuda Backup
For cloud only solutions, this may be great for small businesses or individuals, but the ability to have onsite as well as offsite backups makes recovery faster and more diverse to ensure all areas of data can be recovered quickly.
Chose Barracuda Backup
Barracuda has a rock solid reputation in the business, and sells quality products that any company should stand behind. I've not used any other product that has the level of quality that Barracuda does.
Dell Avamar
Chose Dell Avamar
Avamar has a light and simple management interface. Backup operations can be configured easliy. Job tracking is detailed and descriptive. Platform-independent working flexibility is a big advantage.
Chose Dell Avamar
I would say that Dell EMC Avamar is really nice for an on-premise proposal, so it's hard to compare against another tool.
Chose Dell Avamar
We had an agreement with Dell so we got a good deal on the IDPA appliance. Unfortunately we didn't review other solutions, which was a horrible mistake.
Chose Dell Avamar
The upside to Avamar versus Veeam is that Avamar has a machine tied to the software. Veeam is good software but it is only as good as the back-end storage.
Chose Dell Avamar
EMC Avamar is always incremental and deduplication rate is higher for variable block-level deduplication, restoration is faster as compared to other tools, backups cannot be accidentally deleted as there is an option for retiring the backups, retention is straightforward. EMC …
Chose Dell Avamar
Avamar has simplied the back up approach in their VE edition and is much easier to use than Data Protector. Backing up multiple VMs takes minutes instead of hours now. Creating policies, retentions, and schedules, is vastly improved and much easier.
Chose Dell Avamar
EMC Avamar offers backup and recovery for desktops and laptops, allowing users to extend the power of Avamar "deduplication" backup software with the aim of eliminating the risk of data loss. Backup processes are performed automatically and in the background to ensure …
Chose Dell Avamar
Each one of these products did one thing well. Avamar was able to backup all of the different OS types and different types of data. Also, the reliability and support of Avamar are so much better.
Chose Dell Avamar
I personally would put Dell EMC Avamar at the top of the list for backup/restore data protection. Given the size of the deployment and the technical expertise of the engineers the implementation was flawless and timely. We vetted other companies backup solutions against Dell …
Chose Dell Avamar
Unfortunately, Avamar has stayed behind solutions like Solarwinds Backup and Datto in many different things, like the management of the applications being only desktop, the old fashion interfaces and configurations and specially the fact that it doesn't work as a business …
Chose Dell Avamar
I have evaluated ComVault, Cohiesity, and Rubrik. All three were better choices based on:
  • VMWare support: Live mounts, instant recovery, and file-based recovery from VM snapshots
Chose Dell Avamar
Avamar was already implemented in the organization when I started so I am unfamiliar what other solutions were evaluated.
Chose Dell Avamar
Reliability. Avamar is hands down more reliable than any other backup solution I have used.
Chose Dell Avamar
Avamar was selected for me to use by our corporate office. The user interface of Backup Exec was easier to use, but as far as reliability, Avamar was much better. I always had failures with Backup Exec backups and restores. That is one thing I never had to worry about with …
Chose Dell Avamar
BackupExec and NetBackup both would choke on data that was being replicated by
DFSR. I needed a product that could handle that data, as well as do client side deduplication and compression.
Chose Dell Avamar
Avamar is just overall easier to use and seems to be more versatile. And user-friendly is key when training new team members here at the organization.
Chose Dell Avamar
Originally, we evaluated CommVault with Avamar and due to some differences at the time we decided to go with Avamar. Some of those reasons against CommVault no longer exist, but we have been satisfied with Avamar. Other more current products have been reviewed such as Rubrik …
Chose Dell Avamar
We were considering going with the newer version of the tape backup method we have been using for years. However tapes deteriorate and off site storage adds up. Backups are slow, recovery from incremental backups is slow and unreliable.

FireEye backup to the cloud was cost …
Chose Dell Avamar
We had different backup system before. We used 2 different ones the last 2 years but we ended up with Avamar. Since then we never really change our backup system because we got the result we wanted from Avamar.
Chose Dell Avamar
I started with Avamar as a tape backup replacement. I had drives at each location and a tape robot at the central data center. Moving to disk backup with no tape switch out was incredible. With tech today, almost all backup is disk backup. Avamar's quality hardware and …

If you are a small business with a few machines and your backups aren't of servers that are public facing. If you had to restore a server from backup, it would take a day at least. So, if the server being restored was public facing, that may impact customer relations.

It's well suited when you are looking for something to keep your on-premise environment safe and you don't want to spend a lot of time doing the setup. It's easy to scale and a very reliable solution. I think it is not a really nice solution in terms of pricing, so the challenge here is to check if the value [is] worth it.

Pros
  • The cloud control is great!! I'm able to restore files and folders from basically any machine on the Internet. I can restore either the local machine I'm using at the time, or directly to the server from which it came.
  • The user interface. Very easy to use and understand. Loads of options and configurations you can optimize for your particular needs.
  • Instance replacement. We have had an issue with one unit due to some hardware failure. Barracuda was amazing on getting this replaced quickly and getting us back on track.

  • New and improved interface no longer requires separate program to run on a management server.
  • The avamar interacts with the data domain device to allow for cloud storage.
  • The Avamar AVE footprint is much easier to install and use, given the new GUI.

Cons
  • You can't define backup systems to just go to the cloud, it has to be stored locally as well, which eats up the local storage.
  • These appliances are high-priced for a small amount of storage and if you want to upgrade, you buy a new appliance. There's no replacing hard drives, you basically move up $5K for each 2Tb and replace the entire appliance each time. It's not a healthy model for growth.

  • The technology is stagnant. It's had the same basic interface and feature set over all of the years we used it.
  • A clunky java based management GUI.
  • It only supports RedHat for the management console under Linux.
  • Meta-data continues to grow even when backup sets do not cause nodes to fill, requiring professional services to clean it up.
  • Fork-lift upgrades.
  • It requires a lot of care and feeding with a lot of time on the phone with support.

I have been using the product for over five years. This has performed so well that with the current system reaching its End-of-Life with EMC next year, I have proposed replacing it with the latest version of the product. Now that it integrates with Data Domain, the cost has been greatly reduced. Instead of the need to purchase many nodes, one Data Domain can replace them creating a significant cost savings.

Usability
Dashboards and interfaces within Barracuda Backup are very easy to navigate, with clear success/warnings shown. Setting up backup jobs is probably one of the most simplest tasks - compared to competitors we trialed. Trouble shooting backup issues is also simple due to clear errors (VSS errors shown in a understandable format for example)

The system overall is easy to monitor and see your backup/restore status. The user interface could use updating as it relies on Java and any updates to Java cause the interface to stop working need to be reinstalled

Support Rating
They are always quick to get you routed to a tech support person and always get follow up after contacting them. Last experience was amazing, she adjusted my boxes and they perform even better. I cannot say enough about the support. We had some trouble with one of the windows servers leaving the volume shadow copy out there and would fail. They worked with us to adjust and get working. After that it has been months since I have had to do anything with the server to keep the backups running.

Support is very convincing, always eager to solve issues from the root rather than workaround, don't hesitate to take webex, describe the issues to the core and recommend configuration to avoid further issues. We can ask few questions other than the main issue. They don't hesitate to answer.

The time necessary to manage Barracuda Backups is leaps and bounds superior to Backup Exec. Backup Exec has tons of great features but required constant maintenance. Unfortunately, Avamar has stayed behind solutions like Solarwinds Backup and Datto in many different things, like the management of the applications being only desktop, the old fashion interfaces and configurations and specially the fact that it doesn't work as a business continuity tool, which makes it mostly and out-dated application when you compare it with how the market is evolving.

Return on Investment
  • It is much lower priced than the alternate solution we where thinking about purchasing.
  • It was initially a much more cost-effective solution until they changed their cost model making the ROI go down over the last 2 years.
  • It saved our districts, that we on-boarded, the cost of new hardware. The deduplication factor kept the total size down for new adds.

  • Absolute Zero ROI
  • This appliance does not work in its current state and to update we need to wait 2-3 months
  • Can't wait to get rid of it and replace it with something else. (not even sure if we will be able to get it running before that)
  • [I think] this is one of the worst mistakes we made
