Deltek Costpoint vs. Deltek Vantagepoint

Deltek Costpoint is the most frustrating and clunkiest software I've ever used, and I've been using software for 30 years. The interface appears to have been developed before the internet and HTML and does not appear to use any modern widgets made for HTML. Every button click or menu selection requires a pause while something else loads. Our employees waste much time trying to figure out (what should be) simple tasks, and I've spoken with nobody in our company that likes the software. We've had trainings on Costpoint, but people still have issues constantly.

It is well suited to connecting customer relationship databases and a project lifecycle. Business development people and other personnel should be able to get good use out of it in their daily jobs and functions. It is helpful to keep a record of ongoing projects and new pursuits among the team.

• I love how you can cut a check and it opens a PDF version so it can be saved for retention at a later date if needed.
• I love how you can research vendor history different ways. It allows you to input a range or just enter one at a time.
• I also love that there are tons of reports that can be run to help with any projects.

• There were not enough dimensions for our project needs. We often had to combine fields, which resulted in a lot of project lines.
• I cannot stress enough how important it is to make reports easy to customize.
• Real-Time PTO balances would be helpful when running PTO reports.

• Reporting is very clunky and anything but intuitive.
• Compared to Vision, Vantagepoint layouts are very cookie-cutter. The latest release allows you to create up to 5 columns, still, it is so much less customizable than Vision in look and feel.
• Customer service is poor. If you have a question or issue you can expect it to be addressed in 2-4 weeks, minimum.
• Software testing has been poor in the past. Too many bugs have made it through to release on things that should have easily been caught, such as certain workflows not working, etc.

The cost for our size company may be to high by the time we review, because when purchasing additional licenses on two separate occasions, only 3 months apart, there was a price increase.

For what we mainly use Deltek for it is a great system. The cost for licenses can become an issue because as a growing company we are in need of licenses from time to time and the process is very cumbersome.

It is ok to use; it is not the easiest to use in terms of usability and user-friendliness but it is not the worst. It still feels somewhat outdated. Many cloud options are cleaner or look more modern. But it is good enough and you should be able to get the hang of it.

The software is so huge and clunky that I wouldn't know how to ask for support. Here is my example of support needed: "Hello, I'm filling out my timesheet like I have been doing every day for years, and suddenly this error message came up that says "Error: 6HX7: PLC not available". I just made that up as an example of the cryptic error messages, but what is that telling me?

I would rate Deltek VantagePoint highly in terms of the overall support. You can receive support any time you need it and there is a representative from Deltek assigned to your account so that you can always get the help when you need it. Sometimes, they want to go more in-depth than I would like, however.

Deltek Costpoint is really in a class by itself. There really aren't any true competitors that have project accounting as a staple of their software enterprise suite. Certain components of Costpoint might compete with large ERP systems but each one is unique to that particular industry whereas Costpoint works across all industries and is seamless.

The one-stop-shop of CRM, accounting, reporting, and planning is the biggest appeal for Vantagepoint. When you set up your system to provide a "single source of truth" it makes use of other systems impractical and obsolete. Other systems can provide a portion (CRM, accounting, planning, etc.) of what Vantagepoint offers in a single package, but very few provide the one-stop-shop Vantagepoint provides.

• Costpoint has made it possible for our business to always setup projects in a standardized manner that either meets or goes beyond the industry standards.
