Deltek Costpoint is the most frustrating and clunkiest software I've ever used, and I've been using software for 30 years. The interface appears to have been developed before the internet and HTML and does not appear to use any modern widgets made for HTML. Every button click or menu selection requires a pause while something else loads. Our employees waste much time trying to figure out (what should be) simple tasks, and I've spoken with nobody in our company that likes the software. We've had trainings on Costpoint, but people still have issues constantly.

Sage is wonderful for payroll and employee management. Although it has the capabilities to be a one-stop-shop program, it seriously lacks the interface necessary for wide use. I've had to consult Sage professionals on numerous occasions to explain and walk me through the program as there are so many redundancies. This program has wonderful potential, but they need to update the software and user interface before I can recommend it to any colleague.

  • I love how you can cut a check and it opens a PDF version so it can be saved for retention at a later date if needed.
  • I love how you can research vendor history different ways. It allows you to input a range or just enter one at a time.
  • I also love that there are tons of reports that can be run to help with any projects.

  • There were not enough dimensions for our project needs. We often had to combine fields, which resulted in a lot of project lines.
  • I cannot stress enough how important it is to make reports easy to customize.
  • Real-Time PTO balances would be helpful when running PTO reports.
  • Needs a mobile app

  • The application is very functional, but the interface is a little "stale" compared to more modern applications.
  • The underlying client software is written in an old version of Microsoft Visual Basic. I suppose SOME DAY, Microsoft will be discontinuing, although Microsoft has its own ERP software written in that same code.

Likelihood to Renew
The cost for our size company may be to high by the time we review, because when purchasing additional licenses on two separate occasions, only 3 months apart, there was a price increase.

We will renew our investment in Sage 500, mostly because the competition is very expensive and are bloated with options that are not needed.

Usability
For what we mainly use Deltek for it is a great system. The cost for licenses can become an issue because as a growing company we are in need of licenses from time to time and the process is very cumbersome.

I have been using Intacct for almost 10 years in 2 different companies and I just simply love it. I tried SAP (GUI) and Netsuite and they dont come close to what Ive seen.

Support Rating
The software is so huge and clunky that I wouldn't know how to ask for support. Here is my example of support needed: "Hello, I'm filling out my timesheet like I have been doing every day for years, and suddenly this error message came up that says "Error: 6HX7: PLC not available". I just made that up as an example of the cryptic error messages, but what is that telling me?

Keep your database and application in different servers.
Install Microsoft Office on your application server so you can use some of the data analysis tools in Sage.

Alternatives Considered
Deltek Costpoint is really in a class by itself. There really aren't any true competitors that have project accounting as a staple of their software enterprise suite. Certain components of Costpoint might compete with large ERP systems but each one is unique to that particular industry whereas Costpoint works across all industries and is seamless.

500 seems much smoother at handling some of the basic accounting tasks, for example both issuing and later reconciling checks in Dynamics AX seems a little tedious.
