Devart's GUI tool provides utilities to compare, synchronize, and back up databases (e.g. MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL, etc.) with scheduling, and includes the possibility to analyze and report MySQL tables data. For example, dbForge Studio for MySQL works with any MariaDB database servers, and supports all MariaDB objects types. This solution enables users…

dbForge Studio (Edge)SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Considered Both Products
dbForge Studio (Edge)
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
dbForge [Studio for SQL Server] is far superior in its features, capabilities, ease [of] use, menu layout, and sophisticated design.
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
Before choosing dbForge Studio I evaluated at least a dozen tools, especially on the Visual Query Builder function. For now, I have identified only one product that has a better Visual Query Builder than dbForge Studio. This other product also manages UNIONs, while dbStudio …
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
[dbForge Studio for MySQL is] easy to understand and use because it has a sample UI. We can visibly see database tables and their relationships. We can automate queries according to our use and give access according to their use. Not everyone can delete the table or modify it. …
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
I would say that dbForge equals or beats most of the abilities of the other tools I evaluated at the time. dbForge had better support (Devart), and regular feature updates. dbForge has better tools for data comparison and import/export. The price tag is slightly higher, but …
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
Prior to dbForge Studio for SQL Server, I have only ever used SQL Server Management Studio to manage SQL Server databases. dbForge software, in my experience, is much easier to use, more intuitive, and hence more productive, speeding up most database-related tasks such as …
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)

Although we had to pay licensing fees to use dbForge, one of the main reasons we chose dbForge is compliance-related: we did not want to use freeware to analyze our database, since we are a utility company that has personally identifiable information in our databases.

Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
We haven't tried any other tools that do comparisons like Data Compare does. Our method prior to buying this tool was to manually run queries on each database and compare the output using text compare or by eye.
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
While DBeaver ended up being the goto for our development team, everyone else is going to be using dbForge Studio. The UI was hands down much easier to get used to, and the sorting/filtering options make it super easy for anyone to view the data the way they needed it. You …
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
We found dbForge Studio for Oracle to be more stable and easy to use than both Toad for Oracle and RStudio, among others. There is still room for improvement, such as the MySQL debugger. In the past, we used MySQL Workbench, but the flexibility and robust tool set of dbForge …
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
I did not make the decision to choose dbForge Studio for SQL Server. I personally like dbForge Studio because of my familiarity with the SQL server and the UI.
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
  • Much more stable than MySQL WorkBench
  • Has the power tools a db designer wishes for but lacks in free clients like HeidiSQL
  • Is being improved regularly
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
We used MySQL Workbench tool before dbForge Studio for MySQL and it did not work well. dbForge Studio for MySQL was a much more complete and flexible solution to resolve our development and administration problems. dbForge Studio for MySQL not only resolved our problems it …
Chose dbForge Studio (Edge)
I chose dbForge Studio for MySQL instead of MS SQL Server because:
1) For the most part I don't like Microsoft products. Their UIs are notoriously bad, and you never know when a product tweak will create incompatibilities that will require an expensive upgrade.
2) Since our …
SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
It provided a much better feature set
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
[SolarWinds] SQL Sentry was tested against multiple monitoring systems, but [it] topped them all as [it] was a monitoring tool that was created to pinpoint SQL Server and nothing else. It has features that a lot of other monitoring systems don't have and are not even developing …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I wasn't involved in the decision-making for SQL Sentry, but having previously used PlanExplorer, I felt confident that SQL Sentry would be a good fit to monitor our Microsoft SQL Instances. I would recommend this platform to others that have Microsoft SQL that is in need of …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry has a LOT more information in it than the SolarWinds DPA product. Its reporting tool isn't as good either.

The IDERA product isn't as reliable as SQL Sentry and its reporting isn't nearly as good. The IDERA UI is a resource hog and isn't as intuitive.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
We chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry because it met more of our requirements than any other single tool. Proactive monitoring, quick collection times (every few seconds vs minutes), flexible custom alerting as well as in-depth data for performance analysis (Top SQL is by far my …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Detailed presentation of problems with details and graphs. This was lacking in the profiler. SQL Server has its canned reports, but not as useful as Sentry One. More variety of problem detection. For all Servers at one place. All affected servers in red are shown a one stop …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I have used tools from Idera, redgate, and also Solarwinds. SQL Sentry is one of the better tools out on the market in my opinion.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I like SQL Sentry the best. Foglight was a long time ago and way more comprehensive tool than I needed at the time. Diagnostic Manager has some good features but I had some capacity and performance issues at times with it. SQL Sentry has been consistent and effective at …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
It has been a while now since using the Idera product, but SQL Sentry seems to provide greater configuration and alerting options. SQL Sentry offers 12 different options, all of which are configurable individually for each alert. It can be done at the global level as well as by …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
For our use, SQL Sentry is just a better fit. It's faster to implement and easier to find the data we wanted to see.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I personally haven't looked at others although some other departments have used Idera solution and then switched to SQL Sentry.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
AppDynamics strength lies in showing how the tiers of an application are performing. It shows some things that are good at a macro level for SQL, but it lacks the ability to dig into root cause as well as SQL Sentry. Spotlight and foglight are also good tools in the space. …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry is affordable and allows for more custom fields and criteria to be pushed into the program for monitoring. Azure wasn't effective for the size of our shop currently.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
With 100+ production servers to monitor, cost was the main reason we were able to switch from Idera to SentryOne. Both tools had comparable features but I was able to get more from SentryOne becasue sales reps were willing to work with us and make it a more cost effective …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I evaluated both and thought that SQL Sentry was a much more mature and complete product for approximately the same cost.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
None, I've used SQL Sentry at another job in the past and recommended it to be used at my current job.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I use Toad and SolarWinds. Spotlight used too much of a server's resources. Sequel Pro was not as well-rounded for SQL reviews.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry gives a more complete view of the environment with the advantage of making recommendations of fixes to performance issues.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
We demoed almost all of the major players in SQL Server monitoring and it was easily the winner for all DBAs
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I felt they were all comparable to each other. SolarWinds DPA had the best interface but we chose SQL Sentry due to the difference in cost.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
The SQL Sentry sales reps and technical employees have been wonderful to work with. They have taken the extra time to educate us on the product, and they have made sure we are using it to its fullest potential. I have had a wonderful experience as a user of this tool. …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry provided 24/7 indepth visibility and on a feature to feature comparison, simply outweighted other options available. The expertise at SentryOne is incredible, and it is reflected in their passion for the product, and the development and constant engagement with the …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Every resource has a different way of allowing users to access performance data and events, I simply think that SQL Sentry does it the best by displaying a dashboard that allows seeing the data in angles that no other has.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Both tools cover what you'd expect from an enterprise-grade SQL monitoring tool. Performance monitoring, alerting and diagnostics on both the tools are excellent and I cannot fault either on technical capabilities and feature offerings.

Whenever a user or DBA wants to compare schematics between two environments, dbForge is extremely helpful. This is useful during version or framework upgrades, a database upgrade, patch implementations, service package implementations, or any time to environments would be different. The time it would take to write and execute queries, and then compare is exponentially longer than it takes with dbForge, where this is done and you have an application that allows you to quickly identify incongruities.

Of all the tools I've used, SolarWinds SQL Sentry's Top Query has been the single most helpful tool in helping me identify which queries are putting a load on our servers and at what times. This greatly simplifies my job in prioritizing tuning. Having Plan Explorer directly linked to the tool is icing on the cake.

Pros
  • Compare entire or subset of MySQL tables between databases
  • Configure comparison rules
  • Sync data between compared databases depending on differences
  • Save comparison rules for reuse and sharing
  • Break down differences between missing/new records, or different records
  • See differences highlighted per field
  • Execute sync immediately, or save as an SQL script file
  • Command-line tool that can be used to add comparisons to deploy scripts

  • Alerting is very flexible and configurable to our needs
  • Linking alerting into third party alerting tools via PowerShell was easy
  • Collecting and rolling up SQL statements make it much easier to troubleshoot performance problems
  • Drilling into PLE and what’s happening when it drops out
  • Ease of drilling into time-frame to figure out what was the issue at that time
  • Being able to query the SentryOne database for management reports is awesome (Deadlocks and Blocking)

Cons
  • [The] installation error I've already reported (ABARTN).xml [could use some improvement]. This has to do with Windows Defender (the default Windows anti-virus) not allowing the installation on the default installation directory of dbForge Studio [for SQL Server], thus the error. [With] the workaround, [I] was to disable the anti-virus for the duration of the installation, then turn it back on when the installation [was] been completed.
  • [I would like to see] better defined licensing models for larger teams (seated vs. name licenses).

  • It would be nice if the reports can be interactive like drill down, clickable content, etc.
  • Navigation could improve and become more intuitive.
  • Calendar of events could also improve - wish the date and time range could be specified instead of just by day or interval.

Absolutely. SQL Sentry is an absolute must have for any company with a SQL Server estate. It provides a force multiplier to effectively manage SQL Server, and the feature sets are second to none. The support and expertise at SentryOne is incredible. They are very supportive of both the platform users and helping your business with the product

I don't know how we survived before without this tool, the added value that you get from it to do deep dive performance analysis, reactive problem solving and proactive monitoring and alerting is limitless. We have only scratched the surface of what we can do with this tool at my company. The support and ROI that SentryOne provide is exceptional and one of my favourite vendors to deal with.

The system is working perfectly in capturing data, but we do experience issues with SQL Timeout when viewing results in the remote clients. This may be due to the fact that our monitoring service is consuming most of the CPU, and it is the same server that is hosting the SQL Repository. We could probably fix the issue by separating the SQL instance from the monitoring service.

In most cases the pages load very quickly. In our particular case, we need to do some movement of services to separate our monitoring service to separate infrastructure from the repository. When we first started with SQL Sentry on 5 licenses, we did not have any issues. Since we have now grown that to 25, we are experiencing some challenges. We do not believe this to be a tool problem

Support Rating
Although experience here is limited, as only one question has been asked and answered promptly, the registration and licensing process was very smooth and professional. There are forums online that discuss dbForge issues, as well as a Facts and Questions section on dbForge's website, so product support does seem to exist if needed.

The main platform is very well supported. Requests for help with customizing alerts and monitors have been rapidly and thoroughly responded to. Our use of the chain feature seems to be out of the ordinary and our defect reports there while understood and taken seriously, tend to be lower priority than defects in the main platform. They will work diligently to give us a workaround but correction in the standard release is a little slower in the chain feature.

Was suggested that we install the process monitors on a dev or qa database server, but we found it more useful to create an IT db server and put it there (along with a few other apps that we use for monitoring).

We are running 25 instances through a single monitoring service and it is able to keep up. We are finding that this many instances in our environment is about as many as can be handled. We will need to deploy additional monitoring services. Luckily, there is no additional licensing costs to deploy additional monitoring services. For us, it's just an additional Azure VM.

Return on Investment
  • We perform better and faster syncing analysis between databases.
  • We update running mysql databases faster and more efficiently.
  • Especially with MySQL Workbench we had immense irritations due to all the crashes during the day. With dbForge Studio we finally had a power tool which is stable and does not crash constantly.

  • Better customer service as it alerts me automatically to loss of service issues so I can react and either get things fixed before it impacts the customers or to let my management know as soon as possible
  • It helps me find expensive SQL so our customers get better performance and we make better use of our resources
