Considered Both Products
HYCU
Chose HYCU
This fits Nutanix better than anything I have found. HYCU clearly focuses on personalized service. You can email, call or open a web ticketed, depending on your urgency.
Chose HYCU
I have used several backup programs, I selected 2 just to be brief. The best thing I see with HYCU over Veeam is that it is much more difficult for an attacker if inside the network to gain access to the backups and objects saved in the backup storage.
The best part about HYCU …
Chose HYCU
We moved from VMware w/ Veeam to Hyper-V w/ Microsoft Data Protection Manager. Each backup solution worked well for its respective workload. We made the jump to AHV on Nutanix. MSFT DPM wasn’t compatible and HYCU was a better value than Veeam.
Arcserve ShadowProtect
Chose Arcserve ShadowProtect
Reliable backup and quick and easy to use.
Chose Arcserve ShadowProtect
Storagecraft SPX runs circles around Veeam in physical or mixed physical/virtual workloads. In a purely virtual environment, I would go with Veeam. Backup Exec lost favor with me years ago. Carbonite is fine for file-level backups to the cloud but isn’t a good DR option because …
Chose Arcserve ShadowProtect
SPX is much better at backing up Exchange, SQL, any other databases. I love the SPX disaster recovery features compared to other products.
Chose Arcserve ShadowProtect
ShadowProtect has great technology, and is easily one of the top 5 backup systems out there.
Chose Arcserve ShadowProtect
ShadowProtect is less expensive than some and more robust than others, and for us, provided a fine medium on which to build our support platform. The MSP interface for SPX makes licenses easy to track and deploy, as well as to retire. Overall, have been satisfied with this …
Chose Arcserve ShadowProtect
We have servers dedicated to backups at our client sites so doing a wholesale hardware replacement is really tough. We also have our own cloud that is fairly young, so we don't want to move to a product that forces us into their cloud. We want to use both our cloud and grow …
Chose Arcserve ShadowProtect
Speed, we rely on Shadowprotect to provide us with fast backups and also backups that are smaller in size compared to the other products.

It’s well suited for Nutanix AHV data protection and includes the ability for immutable backups via WORM policy. I’m unsure of its performance in environments that use Hyper-V OR VMware for virtualization. The use of tiered backups without additional policies are great when creating new VMs, even automatically assigning a default backup policy to ensure that all workloads have at least a minimal level of data protection

If we have a scenario where we need very fast backup/ a lot of backups per hour we tend to go towards ShadowProtect , we have several customers with important servers that we backup each 15 minutes with a VSS consistent snapshot. The continuous incremental option also allows us to create one "full backup" and never again afterwards. This gives us the possibility to give longer retention periods to our customers.

Cons
  • Better DR support guidance/best practices
  • Reporting isn’t straightforward and as customizable as I’d like
  • Including M365 backups without additional cost would be a big value add for us

  • The replication offsite can have issues over time. It takes manual involvement to keep it working right.
  • SPX remote management isn't easy out of the box.

Usability
Very simple interface. Can learn it in a day. The instances where I needed a little hand holding, I just called support and they assisted immediately. That's the best of both worlds.

Support Rating
I have had several requests, and issues with the rollout and deployment of HYCU in our production environment. The HYCU team of support and developers have met each issue with importance and some kind of resolution or explanation of help. They have been so supportive even in the not so easy ones. That says something for their product and team behind it.

We don’t need support often, but when we do, the support has been strong. Sometimes it is hard to determine how to access support for the exact issue we are having. There are a decent forum and online ticketing system. Support for the cloud center seems to be provided only by phone, though.

The best thing I see with HYCU over Veeam is that it is much more difficult for an attacker if inside the network to gain access to the backups and objects saved in the backup storage. The best part about HYCU over Bacula is that it is much easier to use and more stable. The interface alone will save you from time and energy using other products

Return on Investment
  • I trust this product to protect our organization if things go badly.
  • I am able to not lose sleep thinking about backups.
  • It had a positive ROI due to the ability to offer better backup technology to our clients.
  • There is a large up-front fee you need to pay, though, as you need a minimum number of licenses to resell as MSP.
