Considered Both Products
Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
I have always been very pro-Intuit.
Intuit links all their products together, and that is super convenient when I need information from another source.
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
It's a payroll software with decent customer support readily available and direct integration with my accounting tools. This made it a prime fit for me, and made payment and tax reporting relatively simple, and errors readily correctable. It does not have time tracking, and I …
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
Data transfer is seamless and allows for data analysis and business management. Reduction of errors in basic data entry allows more time for analysis and managing business finances. Knowing the data flows from one to the other keeps me from checking multiple places for …

About the same.
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
I actually used ADP in both of my jobs right now, and I was not the person who chose to bring on intuit payroll.
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
It is unfortunate to be stuck with only one solution and to be paying for each client. The two-day (and in some cases, one day) turn around time really sealed the deal for me. And that is without pre-funding an account. It reduces complexity, so I'm not paying for a bunch of …
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
Paychex is more automated and user-friendly in the day-to-day operations of the payroll. We also have a great sales rep who has helped us with the whole process.
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
Intuit Payroll is easier to use. It’s more robust than QuickBooks online.
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
I have only used Intuit Payroll for running payroll.
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
I like maintaining one very strong accounting/ERP ecosystem that I trust and that is why I selected Intuit Payroll. The system is trustworthy/reliable, runs on the cloud and integrates with existing QuickBooks products. The pricing becomes more competitive when it is bundled …
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
It is great for small business and does plenty to help make payroll and record keeping easier. Cost vs. productivity - it is worth it.
Chose Intuit Online Payroll (discontinued)
This is a different product in my eyes. Most of the "outsourcers" really take over the entire payroll function, which divorces it from your accounting records --- and then later they try to stuff the results back into accounting through a GJE entry.
If the circumstances are …

Chose Payroll by Wave
All the services we researched were quality options however given our size at the time I settled on Payroll by Wave apps based on cost and how easy it was to run payroll.
Chose Payroll by Wave
First is the cost. Since QuickBooks removed the inhouse solution and moved everything to the cloud, the cost for a small business is prohibited. WAVE is reasonable in cost. Support for QB isn't great they are always trying to upsell and commit. WAVE support in comparison …
Chose Payroll by Wave
Similar features, similar pricing. I selected Wave initially because my accounting is integrated with the other Wave software.
Chose Payroll by Wave
I fell Payroll by Wave is more simplified and makes more sense for me as I already use Wave for bookkeeping.
Chose Payroll by Wave
We moved away from Wave as most of our contractors are time-based, and Wave flat out refuses to provide time tracking features. We tried integrations, but the pricing/complexity goes up and reliability goes down when integrating systems which were not intended to communicate. …

First the cost is very competitive and reasonable, for what we use it for. Each coffee shop has about 5-6 employees, and the costs only incur as a per-check that is run basis instead of a large flat fee for services we won't use. Direct deposit feature is our must-have, the pay dates are super reliable and we have never had any issues with transmission, or taxes not being sent, etc.

Great for small business payroll needs. Reports and taxes are taken care of, everything is automated and once you're set up it's literally just a matter of minutes to run payroll each time. You also get email reminders which is helpful. There are premium features available for companies with larger/more robust needs, and I would definitely recommend looking into this software if you are searching for a user friendly payroll solution

Cons
  • Sometimes there are filings that need to take place outside of the Intuit platform. It would be easier if everything could be done inside the system.
  • It would be great if there could be an automated payroll run with an email that has a button to approve it in one click.
  • Automated filings with email approval.

  • Payroll is a paid feature at $10 + $4/employee per month. I suppose this is a normal expense, but other payroll systems I've used, such as ones built into online banking, have cost me a fraction of this.

Usability
I would rate it a 0. It gets worse and worse all the time. It seems like every time I go into IOP to run a payroll for one of my clients, I have one more problem.

Support Rating
The customer support personnel have always walked me through the steps they need to take to assist me. Never rushed through anything. Always exceptionally thorough, answering all my questions and even sharing my screen visually (I have control, not them). It actually helps me to resolve future issues and questions, if they should arise.

Quick response times, personalized service. They offer in-depth videos and guides for helping to get set up. Any time I have a question about taxes or reporting, they answer quickly and give comprehensive answers. Members of the team with whom I've interacted have been courteous, friendly, and helpful. Overall, great support.

Alternatives Considered
I like maintaining one very strong accounting/ERP ecosystem that I trust and that is why I selected Intuit Payroll. The system is trustworthy/reliable, runs on the cloud and integrates with existing QuickBooks products. The pricing becomes more competitive when it is bundled with other Intuit products. Also, Intuit tends to be a company that listens to its customers and accountant implementation partners, and if a feature or area of functionality is suggested or recommended to Intuit, they take it very seriously. They are continually improving and rolling out new features on all their products.

We moved away from Wave as most of our contractors are time-based, and Wave flat out refuses to provide time tracking features. We tried integrations, but the pricing/complexity goes up and reliability goes down when integrating systems which were not intended to communicate. We since moved to Avaza and sacrificed Payroll for more robust time tracking, project management, and a very open feature development process

Return on Investment
  • Having all of my clients on one platform has been a huge benefit to quickly and easily processing payrolls and tax payments.
  • Intuit Payroll has saved me a ton of time also since, after the setup, processing payroll, taxes, and forms takes only a few clicks. That equates to hours of work time I can spend on something else.
  • The reminders ensure I never miss a deadline. The dashboard shows me a list of all outstanding tax payments and forms that need filed and by when.
