Apigee has been great when managing the quota based access to the APIs. It is really good and suitable when considering proxying the in-house server endpoints access with the way it provides security with API Key validation and OAuth.

TIBCO Cloud Mashery allows you to quickly enable API access control and management together with quick and easy setup of the developer portal. It focuses on core API management with limited integration features (filters, adapters, orchestration) - so TIBCO Cloud Mashery is mostly suited in a setup which already addresses integration features with other products.

Pros
  • Manage user access, we can allow specific access to users based on their need and even customize requests of services based on user requirements.
  • Allow branding, so that SFO can maintain its look and feel but still get the support and functionalities we need from Apigee.
  • Integrates well with other platforms we use.

  • Throttling of requests helps prevent DOS attacks. Attackers try to wreak havoc wherever they can. Mashery helps you control your environments to throttle every endpoint independently.
  • The interface for setting endpoints is very intuitive and makes real-time adjustment easy to do.
  • TIBCO Cloud Mashery support is superb. I do not have to go to their website to know of any issues. They are proactive in communicating with their customers

Cons
  • Might need to bring in more features that a gateway performs, such a orchestration to some extent.
  • May seem to be costly at start for small scale enterprises.

  • Mashery should allow orchestration and transformation out of the box rather than it being a service or having to buy additional services.
  • The dashboard is easy to use but I think it needs a face lift and it needs to start using TIBCO Spotfire to make it more of a analytical engine.

I am not the one deciding whether to use apigee or not really. But personally, I would recommend the use of it as developing APIs on it is easy. And as a mediator between backend servers, we could easily modify request and responses in it without touching any backend code while having a centralize gateway to access our backend APIs too.

Usability
Support has helped us to resolved all the queries and community support was also good.

i find some of the package adding and key are complex . UI experience is bad . Every step need front and backward navigation too much. It would be better if endpoint itself contain package and key addiction option

Support Rating
Quite hard to get support, at least on the coding side, when we encounter blockers. But general concerns, they would schedule a call to you for them to get a whole picture of your concern. Albeit in my experience, bad really as they haven't replied about the progress, but otherwise seems to have been fixed.

Apigee is the best in the market in terms of API Analytics Apigee is having wonderful Documentation with short videos Security is a major concern and Apigee provides an easily configurable policy to secure API Quota and rate-limit is again very easy to configure on every API basis It provides various policies to transform the response from one form to another form e.g. JSON to XML or XML to JSON

Our selection process happened in 2016. TIBCO Mashery's easy hybrid deployment model was the reason why we decided on Mashery over Apigee. Akamai API Gateway is now a new tool on the market evolving really fast but was not available yet when we went through the selection process. Tyk is open source and evolving very fast, but 2 years back, it was not mature enough. That might have changed now.

Return on Investment
  • Unruly, difficult to maintain, unable to test, difficult to troubleshoot and debug. Every ticket that requires Apigee work increases stress and anxiety.

  • Mashery enabled us to go to market quicker because we didn't have to write systems for authentication and security for ourselves.
  • Mashery helps our MTTR when we have issues because we can use their transaction logs to identify and troubleshoot issues.
