Was easier to aggregate company files in PPDD than using Dropbox, for the way we organize our files for our techs and customers.

We already had Avamar in place, and since we have a good ecosystem of Dell Solution suite and wanted to evaluate PowerProtect DD also from that perspective, hence we thought of going ahead with it. We knew the limitations with Avamar and PowerProtect DD were right there from …
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
I didn't pick the PowerProtect systems here, and until about 2 years ago was planning on moving away from them, leaning towards Veeam. Dell EMC changed my mind with software updates. The original interfaces were cludgy at best, not intuitive, and slow. The modern interface …
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
We have started moving away from our Veeam + Data Domain backup environment and are moving into the Rubrik backup system. This is due to the need to quickly live to mount our database backups and to be able to improve our automation of those activities. Also, the native …
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
Dell's product is much better at large data sets and more reliable.
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
Newer solutions maybe faster at backup and restores, but due to Data Domain's longevity in the backup arena and the wide array of platforms it can protect, we are happy with Data Domain for the kind of applications and systems we currently have in use.
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
We looked at new tape libraries, mostly. At the time, Data Domain was pretty much the only game in town besides Exagrid, and I had previous experience with DD at a former job.
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
We selected Data Domain due to its integration with our backup software. The Data Domain works well for what we need it to do.
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
I have used NetBackup, CommVault, Tivoli, and Actifio in my previous environments. With Data Domain I am not constantly babysitting my backup to make sure it is not choking and dying and we are not bound by the same channel lane path constraints most backup software and …
Chose PowerProtect DD Series
Prior to purchasing Data Domain we were a large user of HP VLS9000 technology. In using VLS9000 we were configured to use virtual tape. When we moved to Data Domain we greatly simplified our configuration by changing from virtual tape to NAS based target backups. This change in …

Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
It has a lot of amazing features as compared to other software as they provide a way to manage lot of servers and data with good security features also we have a way to integrate our application to cloud easily, deployment and release upgrade on servers is also too good .

Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
We prefer the Veeam on IBM Cloud over other online backup solutions. The Veeam on IBM Cloud lets us view the backups in the same format as we see our servers from our offices. It is very easy to maneuver in the interface by using the same structure as we have. E.g. folders, …
Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
Veeam BLOWS AWAY Veritas in terms of reliability, recoverability, and Especially PRICE! Veritas is literally thousands of dollar more than comparable Veeam Software. Veritas's support is virtually non-existent. I believe the only reason Veritas is even still in business is …
Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
We compared Veeam on IBM cloud versus VMWare on ESXi, but went with Veeam finally as we are a VMWare environment and wanted to have a backup with another vendor primarily to de-risk.
Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
We wanted the reliability of IBM and they deliver. The other vendors do not have a long history of customer service. It made it an easy sell with our executives to trust that a cloud operation delivered by IBM would be successful and worthy of their reputations. They did not …
Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
Similar results in that we get what we expected from each product.
Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
The only benefit we found to Zerto was continuous data protection.. otherwise Veeam.. hands down. For our department, speed was more important so that we could quickly recover customer and site data to ensure confidence in our systems.
Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
We did not consider any alternatives because we wanted a software that easily integrated with other IBM tools we already had.
Chose Veeam on IBM Cloud
Veeam is far superior to competitors. It's faster and actually works better than any other backup solution that we have tried. Any competitors will have a tough time competing with Veeam if speed and data loss prevention matter to their customers.

When used as a backup target PowerProtect DD models offer incredible density and can efficiently replicate to another cloud-based or offsite unit. Most complaints about these have been addressed in software over the years and they are now a intuitive and easily managed backup system. You are not buying a Swiss army knife, you are getting a machine designed for a purpose, use it for that and you will not be disappointed. While they have the ability to serve as a CIFS server, they are not a filer and lack many of the features inherent to filers and are a poor substitute.

Veeam on IBM Cloud is very well suited for doing data backup from the storage environment in the data center. It does this job well with an easy and straightforward user interface. There is minimal learning curve to get started. We wanted to use the cloud for backup instead of expanding storage in the data center and hence went with this solution. We do data recovery on a regular basis and have been able to retrieve data from Veeam backup in a very straightforward manner meeting the recovery time and recovery point objectives

Pros
  • It writes backups quickly. DDBoost add-on is very useful as well for improving backup speeds.
  • DD is very efficient in its use of capacity. It dedupes and compresses very well.
  • It spans to large capacity amounts.

  • The program installation is straight forward and uncomplicated.
  • Once running it does not put a drain on system resources. After the initial backup subsequent backups are quick.
  • It does what it is deigned to do and they have kept it simple for a reason.

Cons
  • Depending on the model of Data Domain, there is a limit to the number of NFS/SMB threads that can run concurrently. When this limit is reached, the system is slow to respond to client requests.
  • Data Domain support is very slow to turn out new features and bug fixes in their code.
  • OS upgrades are very slow and disruptive.

  • The reporting could use some work. If you have a client who has some serious audit controls in place, you may find yourself creating the report versus depending on the system do that piece for you.
  • My complaint would be with the notification emails. They are not configurable and come out regardless of whether a backup set completed or is still running.
  • The scheduling is a little clunky. It would be much nicer if the backup could be "continuous" anytime it's connected to the Internet (similar to Carbonite).

DD has performed flawlessly for almost 10 years as our backup/recovery storage with offsite replication. Given its track record and great support from EMC, we're unlikely to look elsewhere any time soon.

Veeam is very easy to use once fully on-boarded and trained. Part of the reason we can respond to a critical situation swiftly is that it is so easy to use. We did take 2 years to be fully comfortable with the product as we tested it with others, but once we committed to Veeam, there was no question about it.

Support Rating
Customer support has had some ups and downs here. We've had several issues with EMC support before and during the acquisition by Dell, but in the last 18 months support has been top notch. Quick and knowledgeable help is but a chat away, or they will call you back so you don't have to wait on hold. The team supporting us is responsive and is quick to assist with any request or issue.

At the moment I cannot say anything bad about the overall provided services. It's holding me back to put the mark even higher as other cloud solutions have their advantages as well, so I can't rate this one higher than competitor ones. However the experience is really positive to the moment and it has delivered always.

Return on Investment
  • Positive: The high compression (58.0x) and data reduction (98.3%) have allowed us to optimize the storage for efficient usage.
  • Negative: even after adding capacity, we are running out of space. Adding capacity adds to the overall TCO (e.g. lease cost).

  • We solved a problem where we needed a backup for some remote clients and paying the cost for local backup was not feasible.
  • allows us to put a solid backup and recovery solution in a client with very little monthly cost.
  • Business backup and recovery, disaster recovery, hybrid data protection (onsite and cloud), server and workstation backup.
