Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)Sophos Email
Considered Both Products
Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
While both Abnormal Security and Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection are email-based security applications, they each have their specific strengths. Abnormal is a great "first line of defense" with its machine learning capabilities and proactively blocking malicious or spam …
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Proofpoint has more insight on threats on threat dashboard.

It has good details about correlation of threat with your environment.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Proofpoint TRAP has already proven that their product is reliable and also the innovation that they provided for the business. TAP is very reliable when it comes to alerting and blocking malicious URLs/Attachment/. This product plus the Email Protection are both very effective …
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
This is the first product of its kind that I've used personally. The last 3 companies that I worked for also used Proofpoint, which includes Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection, so I don't have a way to really compare it. I have seen that it is a leader in the industry.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
We ran both side by side and Proofpoint caught many additional spam/phishing emails.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
TAP has much more robust feature sets that what we saw in Mimecast. They have also been acquiring companies adjacent to their business that bolsters their products.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
I have used Cisco IronPort in the past and there is no comparison to the protection that Proofpoint TAP provides. With systems that are not on-prem and other corporate-owned devices, like cell phones and iPad's, corporate-owned anti-x controls are not always able to maintain …
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
We selected Proofpoint TAP as part of the email security solution we were planning to deploy. We did not do an active bake off between specific features, like Proofpoint TAP, when we were evaluating different vendors.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
We don't use any other products, but this one is the best by far, and the support is amazing as well! We have enjoyed the interaction and the support and the implementation walkthrough as well. If you're not with Proofpoint, you need to consider it! What a great product!
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
We did not look at any other products for this specific requirement.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Proofpoint does a great job of identifying threats used in email and because it is integrated with other Proofpoint services subscribed to, it provides a holistic picture of email security for my organization.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Proofpoint costs more than Mimecast, but their uptime in comparison has been much better over the past year.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
We used EOP (Exchange Online Protection) earlier and we had a POC on Proofpoint which we have been excited to use and the results are positive.

Before Proofpoint, we had many issues with impostors. We were having hard time to get EOP (Microsoft) to proactively blok any of the …
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Again, not wanting to disclose competition - But this product stacks up well against other vendors we looked at.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Proofpoint and Mimecast do almost the same thing. But Proofpoint has a larger database of threats at any given time, and that is their strength.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
I have not used another solution, however, I have done my research and Proofpoint is definitely ahead.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
We did not evaluate any other vendors in this space as Proofpoint was the leader when we looked at them.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
None. We haven't evaluated any other solutions like TAP. It was a natural course for us to layer on top of Proofpoint Email Protection.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Proofpoint exceeds both in overall effectiveness. I found Barracuda to be easier to manage at times, but Proofpoint was more "customizable" to fit my needs.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
They actually don't really have a product like TAP.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
I was not involved in the original evaluation or purchase decision for the Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection. Despite that fact, I feel confident that we have made the correct decision with our purchase of Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection.
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
Feature-wise identical. Mimecast was very affordable compared to Proofpoint. We were able to get annual costs with Proofpoint down to a more acceptable level. Also, the migration costs for us (due to deep customization) was more effort for little return (after PP price was …
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
It is terrible, especially for the cost. If I am going to pay for a Lamborghini I expect performance. If my cheap GEO Metro can go just as fast while also saving me lots of money, why drive the Lambo?
Chose Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)
We've seen cases which were passed in Microsoft's solution but later caught with TAP.
Sophos Email
Chose Sophos Email
Featurewise, stacks up well. Chosen for integration into other Sophos products, and additional data/insights provided across our entire Sophos estate.
Chose Sophos Email
Many other solutions are a complicated setup and take a lot of time for the configuration. With Sophos email we were setup and seeing data/emails within an hour. As I have described the ease of use from a high-level for someone like me a Director just peeking into the system or …
Chose Sophos Email
I am not familiar with other products at this point. I came into the IT field using Sophos Reflexion and moved to the new Sophos Email Security once the option was available simply because of our experience with Reflexion. While using Reflexion, we encountered numerous examples …
Chose Sophos Email
Sophos email is a lot easier to manage.
Chose Sophos Email
Sophos is better than the McAfee email gateway. Depending on which license for Defender you have it could be better or worse.
Chose Sophos Email
I was not part of selecting Sophos for this organization. I would recommend a full POC before landing on this as your decision. Some things that you should test for are targeted credential harvesting sites, impersonation rules processing, and general consistency in the …
Chose Sophos Email
I have only tried Sophos Email, and I find it to be a very useful tool, as it protects against information leakage such as fraudulent emails, cloud sandboxing and quarantine, which are essential functions and the product works excellent.
Chose Sophos Email
We had tried Broadcom (formerly Message Labs). It lacks encryption, and the customer service and invoices were terrible. The console was outdated and not easy to navigate. We were limited to a few options and very basic options when it came to troubleshooting or managing users. …
Chose Sophos Email
My experience is mostly with Google's G-Suite spam filtering and, as an end user, a different spam filtering group (which I cannot remember at this time). Sophos Secure Email Gateways seems to be much better at keeping things out of my inbox than either of the other solutions. …
Chose Sophos Email
Sophos is not head and shoulders above any of these competitors, as it's a very closely knit race. Security and email transmission security are one of the highest priorities out there in technology. The world is slowly moving forward, and all of these vendors are leading the …
Chose Sophos Email
Sophos was chosen for our location based on a need for increased security as we deal with sensitive information on a daily basis.
Chose Sophos Email
MS Exchange has the capabilities of out of the box workflow (as described previously), however, we managed to customize Sophos to do semi-manual workflow which is still acceptable. And more the encryption methods of Sophos has been proven by us to be more suitable. And the …
Chose Sophos Email
Deployment features, system stability and rate of threat protection are the main reasons I would go with Sophos Email Protection. Systems like Barracuda email protection seem nice, but the RBLs that they use could be stronger and perhaps use the "Cloud" information system more …

User Testimonials
Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection (TAP)Sophos Email
Likelihood to Recommend
I think it is well suited for any organization. It truly gives good insight on the email campaigns that are hitting your company, as well as the people that are being targeted the most and also VIP users such as executives or even other people in IT, cyber, or administrators.

I strongly believe that if you are looking for a product that does what it says on the box and has the capacity to keep your company safe, you should look at Sophos. They have consistently been at the top of their game and continue to provide a product that meets the ever-changing needs of the threat landscape.

Pros
  • TAP allows administrators and authorized users to effectively analyze threats and identify all targets.
  • The tracking (did a user open an email, did they click a link and how many times) and analytics are a great asset to have for any IT admin.
  • The ability to flag specific users as VIPs or important folks you want to keep an extra measure of attention on.

  • We could customize it to have a certain level of workflow. We manage to enforce certain email (based on key-phrases) to be quarantined before send it to the recipient. And the email needs to be approved (manually) before being released.
  • For certain type (using regex) of email, we will encrypt it if it's sent outside our organization domain.
  • Scalable

Cons
  • Their admin web GUI is cumbersome and unclear in many ways. The learning curve is steep so you have to stay up on things yourself whenever a new feature or service is added.
  • They sometimes add a feature to their toolbox without informing their customers. This is true even when the feature added does not cost extra.

  • Reporting could be more granular, it's the most glaring weakness of the product.
  • The ability to drill down into data from the dashboard would be very helpful for reporting as well.
  • Reverse AD sync so when active directory users are removed, they are removed from Sophos as well would be helpful.

Not my decision, but I have made it very clear this product does not perform. I have emails from our users on how bad it is after switching to it.

It was easy to use and easy to implement. You don't need previous knowledge on the products, after we got this up and running, it took us hours to put everything together. The transition was easy and seamless.

Usability
The interface is simple to use but still contains the information needed to conduct thorough investigations. If you own licenses for other Proofpoint tools, Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection is easily accessible from those applications. The ability to sandbox URLs within the TAP interface is a great feature as well. The overall performance of the GUI is seamless, especially if enabled with your organization's SSO.

The solution is very scalable, with a possibility to be customized; which means that Sophos Email can be configured depending on our own situation and context not on a general way. On the other hand, Sophos Email has a broad feature set; I mean, along with core spam and malware protection, Sophos offers advanced features such as real-time
link following, threat isolation, spoof protection, etc.

Support Rating
Generally have had good response and resolution time with knowledgeable technicians, and if needed the ticket is moved to someone with more expertise to better address the issue. Have used the ticketing portal, phone, as well as the beta chat feature (permanent please!)

I have always found the answers I have needed in the documentation or online, and have not needed to contact Sophos Secure Email Gateways' support team. This, I think, bodes well for how their software is easy to use and has good documentation when you cannot find what you need in the basic interface.

Proofpoint managed the installation and made it very simple. We had a dedicated installation engineer who checked in on use periodically after go-live to ensure that there were no issue.

While both Abnormal Security and Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection are email-based security applications, they each have their specific strengths. Abnormal is a great "first line of defense" with its machine learning capabilities and proactively blocking malicious or spam emails. Proofpoint Targeted Attack Protection is for when applications like Abnormal Security fail and let malicious phishing emails through.

Many other solutions are a complicated setup and take a lot of time for the configuration. With Sophos email we were setup and seeing data/emails within an hour. As I have described the ease of use from a high-level for someone like me a Director just peeking into the system or an analyst that can do a deep dive is one of the best users interfaces I have seen for any product.

Return on Investment
  • The cost associated with a successful threat (such as a spoofed wire transfer) far exceeds the cost of the Proofpoint TAP system.
  • It is hard to quantify the actual amount saved by threats that TAP has prevented, but I feel that it is an excellent value (and piece of mind).
  • The TAP saves us money and increases productivity by reducing the amount of malicious and SPAM emails.

  • We have prevented several cases of employees tried to steal organization's information; this has a great effect on the ROI not only in dollars but also in our reputation.
  • We have used it for more than 4 years, which is more than typical technology adoption we usually do; and this is the result of the above causes (prevention of internal fraud).
  • Need to have an expert of regex to accommodate more advanced DLP function/requirements
