Considered Both Products
SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
DPA is a market leader and goes beyond what most products in the space can offer. It's a battle between SQL Sentry and DPA for the lead and everybody has their favorite. I personally prefer DPA for ease of install, management and better tuning and query advice options.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
The main thing was their popularity for the products they are providing. Also, we had great customer support for other SolarWinds products also.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
Our organization has not compared SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer with any other products. We selected SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer for the simple fact that we use other SolarWinds products, and we wanted a solution that both compliments and integrates with …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer is really good at some scenarios compared to other tools in the market.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer gave us better results and is faster than the competition.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
We have evaluated AppDynamics and Datadog along with Solarwinds DPA and definitely the winner is SolarWinds. We have been using it for the past 5 years. It has better alert functionality and is easy to use while providing great analytics.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
We were a long-time user of Database Analyzer even before it was acquired by SolarWinds. We did look at other applications in the past. As it has been a long period, its not beneficial to mention here. We have seen some other options like from Microsoft and Oracle which are …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
I haven't used any other tool as extensively as Database Performance Analyzer.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
None. We're happy with DPA
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
We use both DPA and Red Gate SQL Monitor (SQM) as third-party tools, and Query Store within SSMS. SQM's alerting and reporting capabilities exceed those of DPA in terms of being able to present single-purpose tiles for a server, where excessive smoothing doesn't hide some …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
Solarwinds DPA came with a 30-day trial. We used that to evaluate the product, and when a P1 incident occurred with no DBA available we installed another 30-day trial. Its performance was good enough that we bought it that day!

We didn't try any other similar product before …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
Interface, presentation, wait time...
We are more concerned with improving query performance than hardware/resource usage.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
I'm used to Oracle Enterprise Manager and it is one of best for Oracle Enterprise Database.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
There are some overlaps, but DPA has a lot more historical information that allows us to analyze statements over time rather than just see what is going on at that moment.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
I have used Spotlight (for Oracle on RAC) but it has been several years. The dashboard was crisp, clean, and intuitive, but the tool had a significant overhead. However, no competitor made a tool that met our needs at the time. I have also used Idera's SQL Diagnostic Manager in …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
We used Toad SQL Tuning advisor. Compared to Toad, DPA is very comprehensive.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
At the time, we found SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer to be easier to setup and to have a richer feature set than Redgate SQL Monitor, plus, from what I remember, the DPA pricing worked better for us over the course of a year. We're very happy with all the features DPA …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
A couple of years ago I did research on a number of products to assist me in providing on-time accurate information about our customer databases. I had a couple in mind back then. I then attended our local Oracle Users Group Annual Conference, where a large number of vendors …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
At the time of evaluation, this product was similar in terms of cost but DPA was far better to access query performance issues which were the most important aspect for us. Redgate at the time was heavier on resource monitoring which was less important at the time.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
I like the web-based interface and wait stats analysis of DPA. Some of the other tools have more features, but DPA feels like a more polished tool, and the features it has work well. It's been a while since I've looked at the competitors' products. DPA works well for us, and …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer

The SolarWinds DPA dashboard provides an overview of all monitored instances with detailed response time data captured in the performance data warehouse for every interaction, Database Performance Analyzer helps to identify long-term trends, isolate recurring problems, and …

Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer is faster, cheaper and more reliable. It's missing some native features but nothing extra useful.
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
SolarWinds is much more intuitive and really helpful as a starting point for our monitoring purposes.
Even the junior level colleagues can really make sense of the systems which could be facing any potential issues and act accordingly. It also provides some guidance towards what …
Chose SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer
I have only used DPA, as that were the best to use when running Oracle Standard Edition.
SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
It provided a much better feature set
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
[SolarWinds] SQL Sentry was tested against multiple monitoring systems, but [it] topped them all as [it] was a monitoring tool that was created to pinpoint SQL Server and nothing else. It has features that a lot of other monitoring systems don't have and are not even developing …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I wasn't involved in the decision-making for SQL Sentry, but having previously used PlanExplorer, I felt confident that SQL Sentry would be a good fit to monitor our Microsoft SQL Instances. I would recommend this platform to others that have Microsoft SQL that is in need of …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry has a LOT more information in it than the SolarWinds DPA product. Its reporting tool isn't as good either.

The IDERA product isn't as reliable as SQL Sentry and its reporting isn't nearly as good. The IDERA UI is a resource hog and isn't as intuitive.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
We chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry because it met more of our requirements than any other single tool. Proactive monitoring, quick collection times (every few seconds vs minutes), flexible custom alerting as well as in-depth data for performance analysis (Top SQL is by far my …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Detailed presentation of problems with details and graphs. This was lacking in the profiler. SQL Server has its canned reports, but not as useful as Sentry One. More variety of problem detection. For all Servers at one place. All affected servers in red are shown a one stop …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I have used tools from Idera, redgate, and also Solarwinds. SQL Sentry is one of the better tools out on the market in my opinion.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I like SQL Sentry the best. Foglight was a long time ago and way more comprehensive tool than I needed at the time. Diagnostic Manager has some good features but I had some capacity and performance issues at times with it. SQL Sentry has been consistent and effective at …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
It has been a while now since using the Idera product, but SQL Sentry seems to provide greater configuration and alerting options. SQL Sentry offers 12 different options, all of which are configurable individually for each alert. It can be done at the global level as well as by …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
For our use, SQL Sentry is just a better fit. It's faster to implement and easier to find the data we wanted to see.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I personally haven't looked at others although some other departments have used Idera solution and then switched to SQL Sentry.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
AppDynamics strength lies in showing how the tiers of an application are performing. It shows some things that are good at a macro level for SQL, but it lacks the ability to dig into root cause as well as SQL Sentry. Spotlight and foglight are also good tools in the space. …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry is affordable and allows for more custom fields and criteria to be pushed into the program for monitoring. Azure wasn't effective for the size of our shop currently.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
With 100+ production servers to monitor, cost was the main reason we were able to switch from Idera to SentryOne. Both tools had comparable features but I was able to get more from SentryOne becasue sales reps were willing to work with us and make it a more cost effective …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I evaluated both and thought that SQL Sentry was a much more mature and complete product for approximately the same cost.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
None, I've used SQL Sentry at another job in the past and recommended it to be used at my current job.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I use Toad and SolarWinds. Spotlight used too much of a server's resources. Sequel Pro was not as well-rounded for SQL reviews.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry gives a more complete view of the environment with the advantage of making recommendations of fixes to performance issues.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
We demoed almost all of the major players in SQL Server monitoring and it was easily the winner for all DBAs
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
I felt they were all comparable to each other. SolarWinds DPA had the best interface but we chose SQL Sentry due to the difference in cost.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
The SQL Sentry sales reps and technical employees have been wonderful to work with. They have taken the extra time to educate us on the product, and they have made sure we are using it to its fullest potential. I have had a wonderful experience as a user of this tool. …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
SQL Sentry provided 24/7 indepth visibility and on a feature to feature comparison, simply outweighted other options available. The expertise at SentryOne is incredible, and it is reflected in their passion for the product, and the development and constant engagement with the …
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Every resource has a different way of allowing users to access performance data and events, I simply think that SQL Sentry does it the best by displaying a dashboard that allows seeing the data in angles that no other has.
Chose SolarWinds SQL Sentry
Both tools cover what you'd expect from an enterprise-grade SQL monitoring tool. Performance monitoring, alerting and diagnostics on both the tools are excellent and I cannot fault either on technical capabilities and feature offerings.

I believe that SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer is a great choice for an organization that does not have a specific DBA or one that is still growing into the role. SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer is filled with hints, tips, and explanations of the various readings and metrics. This is very useful to help understand what is happening and why, what it means, and what some potential solutions are towards remediating any issues. This is extremely valuable for our development team, allowing them to be more proactive with the queries they write in viewing how they perform and where bottlenecks might be.

Of all the tools I've used, SolarWinds SQL Sentry's Top Query has been the single most helpful tool in helping me identify which queries are putting a load on our servers and at what times. This greatly simplifies my job in prioritizing tuning. Having Plan Explorer directly linked to the tool is icing on the cake.

Pros
  • Ability to drill down to wait for the issue and have a clear path as to what may be causing the issue.
  • Ability to quickly add a new target and the ease of installation and upgrades.
  • Reporting features to group my most troublesome customers into a daily report in one email.
  • Excellent customer support on any issues I can't immediately solve.

  • Alerting is very flexible and configurable to our needs
  • Linking alerting into third party alerting tools via PowerShell was easy
  • Collecting and rolling up SQL statements make it much easier to troubleshoot performance problems
  • Drilling into PLE and what’s happening when it drops out
  • Ease of drilling into time-frame to figure out what was the issue at that time
  • Being able to query the SentryOne database for management reports is awesome (Deadlocks and Blocking)

Cons
  • Resiliency of the Monitoring checks after the server underwent maintenance reboot. My experience is the monitor (Action) needs to be started manually. If possible it can automatically detect service/server then start to monitor again when system is back up.
  • Much lighter UI.
  • Granularity up to minutes.

  • It would be nice if the reports can be interactive like drill down, clickable content, etc.
  • Navigation could improve and become more intuitive.
  • Calendar of events could also improve - wish the date and time range could be specified instead of just by day or interval.

We have relied on this product for a very long time and it continues to exceed expectations. The product is a vital part of our organization at this point, it would not be very ideal for us to abandon it. We use it almost every day and depend on its alerts for critical parts of our business

Absolutely. SQL Sentry is an absolute must have for any company with a SQL Server estate. It provides a force multiplier to effectively manage SQL Server, and the feature sets are second to none. The support and expertise at SentryOne is incredible. They are very supportive of both the platform users and helping your business with the product

Usability
I don't want to think about managing clusters of SQL servers in the future without this tool. We have demoed other tools and SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer is the gold standard for usability and insight into what your servers are doing. The UI is a bit dated, but everything is laid out in a logical manner and drilling down into queries or timeslices is extremely intuitive.

I don't know how we survived before without this tool, the added value that you get from it to do deep dive performance analysis, reactive problem solving and proactive monitoring and alerting is limitless. We have only scratched the surface of what we can do with this tool at my company. The support and ROI that SentryOne provide is exceptional and one of my favourite vendors to deal with.

The system is working perfectly in capturing data, but we do experience issues with SQL Timeout when viewing results in the remote clients. This may be due to the fact that our monitoring service is consuming most of the CPU, and it is the same server that is hosting the SQL Repository. We could probably fix the issue by separating the SQL instance from the monitoring service.

In most cases the pages load very quickly. In our particular case, we need to do some movement of services to separate our monitoring service to separate infrastructure from the repository. When we first started with SQL Sentry on 5 licenses, we did not have any issues. Since we have now grown that to 25, we are experiencing some challenges. We do not believe this to be a tool problem

Support Rating
I have had to use their support on a few occasions, for reasons that I am not clear about until recently I have always had problems upgrading the software (although the last 2 updates have gone without issue which I am very pleased to say). On those unfortunate occasions, the support has been brilliant with either excellently documented guides on how to resolve the issue by myself or have been hands-on with calls and screen sharing to remotely fix the issue. Every time the problem was sorted and more importantly, nothing was lost (apart from a bit of time). And as I stated above whatever the problem was that was causing my upgrade issues appears to have been resolved in the last 2 updates.

The main platform is very well supported. Requests for help with customizing alerts and monitors have been rapidly and thoroughly responded to. Our use of the chain feature seems to be out of the ordinary and our defect reports there while understood and taken seriously, tend to be lower priority than defects in the main platform. They will work diligently to give us a workaround but correction in the standard release is a little slower in the chain feature.

Follow the guidelines for the capacity of the servers. We found that the DPA databases were getting rather large and also that there are ways to reduce their size built into some of the options.

Was suggested that we install the process monitors on a dev or qa database server, but we found it more useful to create an IT db server and put it there (along with a few other apps that we use for monitoring).

I have used Spotlight (for Oracle on RAC) but it has been several years. The dashboard was crisp, clean, and intuitive, but the tool had a significant overhead. However, no competitor made a tool that met our needs at the time. I have also used Idera's SQL Diagnostic Manager in more than one company. That tool is helpful for a larger environment than we currently have. But I think it is better at alerting than DPA but worse at just about everything else. The good thing is you can flag an alert as acknowledged, so you stop getting emails. The bad thing is I don't think I could use it to troubleshoot issues like I do with DPA. I do not have enough experience to provide helpful feedback on the others selected.

We are running 25 instances through a single monitoring service and it is able to keep up. We are finding that this many instances in our environment is about as many as can be handled. We will need to deploy additional monitoring services. Luckily, there is no additional licensing costs to deploy additional monitoring services. For us, it's just an additional Azure VM.

Return on Investment
  • Paid for itself in days. We had a stored procedure that could not meet its SLA, DPA highlighted the issue and contributed to the resolution.
  • We had a stored procedure that we were able to calculate as running in 9 milliseconds, unfortunately, we had transactions coming in 7 milliseconds, resulting in duplicate transactions, indicating that a mutex function was needed.

  • Better customer service as it alerts me automatically to loss of service issues so I can react and either get things fixed before it impacts the customers or to let my management know as soon as possible
  • It helps me find expensive SQL so our customers get better performance and we make better use of our resources
