Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I used to be part of an organization responsible for the quoting and deployment of Alcatel-Lucent Omniswitches on customer networks. Mainly focused on dedicated Hw appliances connected to either a SIP Trunk or PRI/BRI/Analog lines.

Manufacturing environments or areas where ntw connectivity was not so strong were strongly looking for solutions like this one as it gave them the agility to avoid being controlled on whether the data connection was working.

  • DECTs and in warehouses mobility solutions

Cons

  • Being provided in Cloud environments
  • Out of the VPN connection and service usage
  • limited reach when using DECT antennas.

Return on Investment

  • Cloud platforms have a quicker rollout of new functionalities rather than a dedicated appliance
  • high initial OPEX which may require financing solutions vs Cloud platforms is most of times a no brainer in favour of Cloud
  • Fewer companies support Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch, thus it may be difficult to manage and support it on the medium to long term

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have some Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch 6900 series switches with 10 GbE SFP+ ports in a distribution topology to concentrate some Dell and Alcatel access switches that we have in some units of the company. The model we use is the OS6900-X20 which has 20 10GbE SFP+ ports. This switch connects to Core Central which is located in the matrix. It is where the multimode and single-mode fibers are concentrated and the trunks of the VLANs are configured to create security and organization of the network.

Pros

  • Many 10GbE SFP+ fiber port options.
  • Can be used in Distribution and Core topologies.
  • Options with 20, 32 and 48 10GbE SFP+ ports.
  • Redundant fans, fonts, and CPU.

Cons

  • 24/7 support and warranty come at a higher price. The service is not available in all cities.
