Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We currently use CrashPlan on our Marketing server which has files going back 17 years. Using CrashPlan we are able to be safe knowing that our files are backed up and that we can grab any files either deleted or corrupted with ease. The history function allows us to go back quite a bit of time for those much-needed files.

Pros

Backs up full File systems
Being able to go back in history and grab individual files
Small footprint on installs and easy to use software

Cons

Everything we've needed it for has been perfect and I don't see a need for improvement for us.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is best suited for on-prem file servers or even local on an individual computer. Anywhere that files are stored that need to be protected and safely kept in case of issues.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use CrashPlan as a budget point solution for small businesses and SOHO clients. This is predominantly to provide backup of critical data for individuals, families, or small businesses. It is not to provide system recovery backup but specifically focuses on the critical/important data an individual, family or small business would want to have backed up, off-site. Invariably it is used as the off-site component of a classic 3-2-1 backup plan.

Pros

Product is pretty easy to configure (Less than 30 minutes for a single computer)
Product generally grinds away without any noticeable issues
Regional cloud storage locations are fairly unique for this kind of product at this price point

Technical support
Support ticketing and lifecycle
Phone support hours
I think you should have an idea where the beef is by now

Likelihood to Recommend

Individuals (SOHO), families and SMBs, who have a tight budget for offsite critical company data backup are well suited to this product. Especially if you want your data to be hosted locally (Australia in our case). Larger companies, with higher requirements and budgets would be better served elsewhere. Especially when you consider the poor technical support. Although, to be fair, their poor support may just be issues with their Pro/SMB products, as opposed to their enterprise products. However, if that is the case it's a pretty poor show/indicator still.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

CrashPlan was purchased to fill the gap with two file servers, that only backed up weekly. We have added CrashPlan to ensure that business critical data is replicated to the cloud, and has a suitable retention period to ensure that we're able to recover key files for as long as we need them.

Easy to setup
Clear pricing structure
Secure web management portal

Cons

Backup speeds are a little slow
Recovery of large numbers of files can be a little hard

CrashPlan is the perfect solution for small / medium sized businesses that require a cloud backup solution for key files. We have found that it's been great in that scenario, the issues come if you have too larger a selection of data, or any specific security requirements, that aren't built into the product by default.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use CrashPlan for workstations and server file backups at many of my clients. It solves the issues of lost files and gives peace of mind that files are backed up with a good amount of retention. I manage about 15 different clients, 30 servers, and over 100 workstations.

Pros

Automated backup
Data retention
Ease of installation and management

Cons

Longer retention time- would like a year at least.
Server support-as of now I believe it i really just file backup.
Exchange an SQL backup options.

Likelihood to Recommend

I have pushed out implementation to workstations by just sending an email invitation and no real interaction is required-users just need to follow simple install instructions and default settings are adequate for almost all situations. Server deployment is a bit more involved but I have made it work. Many servers have over 1TB of data and they can have trouble finishing a daily and initial backup due to network and internet restrictions.

I use CrashPlan as a cloud backup solution for my business.

Pros

The data is encrypted in transit using a custom encryption key
CrashPlan allows for inexpensive unlimited storage
It allows you to configure the number of versions of a file that you'd like to keep

Cons

CrashPlan provides limited access to downloading your data. To restore even small amounts of data you need to request that they send you your data using a hard drive. This is terribly inconvenient. I've read that you might be able to adjust this setting, but I have not located that setting.
On one or two occasions I've had to re-install the software as I was getting errors regarding the UI being able to connect to the service.

Likelihood to Recommend

Overall, for the price of the service and the amount of data that you can backup, I think the service is great. It provides peace of mind knowing that my data is stored securely in the cloud.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use CrashPlan for an enterprise-wide desktop backup solution. All employee computers have CrashPlan installed and enabled by default, which allows us to standardize the recovery process if an employee's computer is lost, stolen, or damaged. Users can self-manage their backed-up files and restore documents that may have been inadvertently deleted as well.

Likelihood to Recommend

CrashPlan is a great solution for medium to large enterprises that want a standardized process for employee backups. It may not work as well for very small organizations that operate with a "bring your own device" setup. Overall, CrashPlan scales well, which makes it a good choice if you plan to deploy backups across multiple departments throughout your organization.

We use CrashPlan as a secondary cloud backup in addition to another on-prem Backup solution for a satellite office where a Digital Asset Management Server resides. It is perfectly capable as a primary backup solution, but in our environment, it made a great secondary layer of protection. We also used CrashPlan for certain freelance artists who choose to use Macbook and iMac machines to keep company assets secure. Crashplan has proved to be incredibly intuitive, easy to implement and restore assets with. I have set CrashPlan up at two other organizations with great success as their primary backup solution.

Pros

Installation and configuration is very straight forward.
Asset recovery is a simple and intuitive process.
Shows real time backup results in your server notification window.

Cons

Currently the 2FA seems to be a bit more difficult than other applications.
Imbedded rules preventing a select few file types from backing up, call support for help if these are required.
Differentiating between personal and business accounts is unclear.

Likelihood to Recommend

This is a great Cloud backup solution. The cost is low, the bandwidth is managed well within the application, and the footprint for the client on a machine is very small and provides a notification menu icon with info about what is happening now or very recently. This does not backup to anything locally, so if that is a requirement, it will not meet that need. It used to be able to backup from one machine to another remote machine at one time, but now it is only cloud-based.

I use CrashPlan to constantly backup updated and new files on our backup server, for redundancy. I needed something to add to my backup plan that would present another offsite option that was not tied to my geographic area, and that was also file-oriented as opposed to snapshot-driven.

Pros

Constantly monitors our backup server for any file changes.
Super-easy monitoring control panel for allowing selections to be added.
Allows for backup of mapped drives.

Cons

Remote management tool other than web interface.

For a very simple off-site backup of files, CrashPlan works really well for us. I can't remember the last time it had an issue running in the background. Basically, I run most of our file backups to the server the app resides on. When those files are backed up to that location, CrashPlan backs up those files to the cloud. Super easy to retrieve anything or any dated version of a file.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our company uses Code42 (formerly CrashPlan) daily for all company backups. We use Code42 (formerly CrashPlan) as our off-site backup system to have constant backups on-site and off-site. This ensures there is no data loss with any of our data and information across our multiple platforms and servers.

Capriccio Elite, LLC currently uses Code42 to back up all files across all workstations in our agency. This includes sensitive information housed on local computers and our internal file server as well as QuickBooks files. As a stand-alone, the back-ups are reliable. We choose to use Code42 as part of a daisy chain of backups. Meaning, local computers backed up to a NAS and Code42 and NAS backed up to Code42. This more than adequately solves our need to have and access back-ups of files and documents. Furthermore, if a file is deleted locally, it is easy to find and restore from the Code42 console.

Pros

Code42 really does a very good job of backing up files. The integrity of the files remains good so long as the file was not corrupt to begin with.
The with proper setup, managers and users can be alerted based on a scheme set by the user when the work-station has not been backed up for a specified amount of time. We use the default of 3 days for warnings and 5 for critical back-ups.
Backups can be scheduled to run during times when internet traffic is high. Meaning, if the user has a low connection, running backups in the background can slow the processes. The ability to choose time to backup is very helpful in these situations.
The User Dashboard is user-friendly meaning that once the user logs in, the tabs and options are relatively self-explanatory.
Code42 allows the user to choose what files to back-up. This is quite useful as many of the files on a system (such as app data) take up room and speed given the changes within these files make through the day.
2-factor authentication is available as well as users/admin archive key password or custom key.
When set up to initiate a backup every time a change is made, the likelihood of "losing" a file is minimized.

Cons

The login for Code42 still lets you get through to the backups however, one cannot make any adjustments. One must now use the login located at www.crashplanpro.com. I have been frustrated about why I could not see my bills, add licenses, etc by not having this information. It would be helpful to put a re-director for those accustomed to using the old login site.
History logs for devices have never worked. The workaround is to go into the device to review the logs. Logs are important when trying to figure out which file threw an error when backing up and why.
Not much has changed in online/offline indicators and moving files to a new computer. On the surface, it seems simple but it usually takes 2 or 3 reinstall attempts to get Code42 to recognize the new computer. For example, the backup shows current but is offline.

Likelihood to Recommend

Code 42 is best suited to backup local files on computers including mission-critical files where encryption, access, and security. Redundancy is possible with layers of extra security if needed. Anyone who keeps their photos or other personal information on a computer will greatly appreciate this. Removable media is unfortunately not always reliable. It works well in the cloud environment. It will also backup One Drive files! Probably the best feature is the unlimited backup space for files. Code42 does not do system image backups. This can be a problem in a business environment where restoring operating systems of workstations, files servers, and on-premises servers is a need.
