Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use the product to help business users develop front-end business logic around some of our core systems, such as SAP, so that we don't have to adjust or customize SAP core modules. Instead, we use Mendix as a low-code fast development platform to develop add-ons and customizations.

Pros

It allows business users to participate more readily in converting requirements into business process flows. I think that's what it does really well, as well as integration with hyperscalers for cloudification of application customizations.

Cons

I would say making sure that it has full integration across all the hyperscalers such as AWS, Microsoft, and Google. That would be a key area for me.

Likelihood to Recommend

I would say if it's being used in conjunction with the application modernization programs and customers moving some of the applications to a SaaS model, then I think Mendix works particularly well in that area, as well as improving the cycle time for developing applications and bringing them into production through the low-code platform. In terms of where it's less suited, probably less suited in more specialist engineering applications.

Great application and I recommended. We were using Siebel Application and it was causing us a lot of problems, especially with user experience and design. It was so hard to add links or new files or widgets, but we now just use Mendix and all problems are solved easily.

Mendix is the best solution for B2B applications of processing simple data that need to be built fast, that are built and maintained in environments that requirements change often, so applications that need to be maintainable and easy to change.

Pros

Data management system.
Front-end for any back-end.
State machines.
Flexible implementation and change.
Fast development (minimal time-to-market).
The platform supports the Scrum process.

Cons

Better support of the dev team (more detail in the changes made by each developer)
More reliable upgrading and merging of branches.
For-loops would be nice.
More "what you see is what you get" (commits to the DB, refresh of pages, showing and closing pages is usually happening at the end of a transaction, instead of the moment the developer has modeled it to happen).

Mendix is more flexible and custom making oriented than Appian. OutSystems is almost the same as Mendix but more directed to the traditional developer, whereas Mendix is trying to make it possible for everyone to be able to model.

Provides valuable insights into business processes by exposing bottlenecks with the visual style of modeling
Is very adaptable to change

Mendix is very well suited for developing a modern user interface on top of an existing IT-landscape. The adaptability to change allows for fast business value to be added, without intrusive database redesigns.

Overall, these have a lot in common, but where Mendix really stands out, is its ability to integrate with multiple (previously existing) systems.

We are a reseller and a partner of Mendix and build Mendix applications for customers.

Pros

Low-Code development = easier and much faster than coding
Mendix comes with a full package out of the box = It is possible to integrate Mendix fully into a SCRUM lifecycle (modeler, sprintr, ATS, APM...)
IT and business are able to communicate better via Mendix, especially due to the Web modeler.

Cons

There are many developers who do not use the integrated sprintr of Mendix for bigger projects. Maybe it's worth finding out why exactly and improve the Mendix sprintr.

Likelihood to Recommend

Mendix is well suited for smaller projects with only a few sprints. Bigger projects that take longer than a year are not that appropriate.

Our company uses Mendix to empower customers to digitilize their business model and innovate in the digital realm by providing new, unique and competitive features. So far I have participated in three projects for three separate customers. For all of them, we have been able to deliver beautiful and functioning apps in record times, reducing the time from idea to production ready application to just a few months.

Pros

Business-2-employee web based apps is where the true strength of Mendix is. Medium sized and large businesses that want to digitize some of their processes can do so with amazing development speed. The pricing model also encourages large companies to separate their workflow across multiple apps, keeping the apps small and easily maintainable.
Integration with other web services, especially SOAP based, but also other RESTful services, is extremely streamlined. Data structures and web service calls are auto-generated, and sending of files via different protocols is supported without any extra effort.
It enables developers and non-developers to quickly and easily build responsive apps.

Cons

The App Store is critical to meeting customer expectation, because it features hundreds of ready-to-use components. The problem is that some of the components are not-updated regularly by their owners, and since Mendix is not the owner, support for these components is hard to come by.
Offline mode has been a thing in Mendix for a few years now, and it has recently been improved to offer conflict management and other perks. However there are still unnecessary limitation to what an offline app is able to do.
The Desktop IDE (so called Modeler) is not open for citizen developers. I think Mendix has something to learn from Eclipse and Atom to name a few, where plugins built by citizen developers greatly expand the value of the IDEs.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you are attempting to break new grounds and conquer emerging markets, Mendix gives you the ability to quickly test out your ideas before making a serious commitment. If the requirements are uncertain and they are constantly changing, Mendix empowers developers to react quickly and stay agile during the development process.

We use Mendix to solve client problems and help them innovate their business. Because of its versatility it can be used to address any problem we encounter. Mendix is very business oriented because of, a.o., its visual logic. This enables us to work closely with the business and rapidly build apps, try out innovative ideas and generate ROI.
