Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use OpenShift within multiple departments, but in mine specifically (integrated platform engineering) we use it for running pods related to hosting web apps for publication resources, running builds, and creating ephemeral testing environments for kits. We have 2 clusters not currently in production, and are working towards that this year.

Pros

  • Locked down RHCOS hosting vms
  • Operators make adding major features easier
  • Console is good for observability

Cons

  • Docs for installation are especially rough
  • Connectivity to LDAP for authentication is complex, especially for such a desirable feature
  • Cluster install takes too long to be truly ephemeral

Likelihood to Recommend

OpenShift is great for our business cases, where things like security and sign ons are a major concern. We've also automated a bit of the setup ourselves to make it easier. Without the prior experience i have, however, install would be infeasible without dedicated support from RH. I would not recommend for personal / community use

Kubernetes
Comparing the 2, open source Kubernetes is quicker to setup by about 75%, less restrictive, and free of course, but it lacks the security and support of Red Hat, and deploying features is much harder compared to with operators. For buisiness purposes, OpenShift is just more trustworthy than a self made and managed cluster

Red Hat OpenShift is an ideal solution which gives unified platform for all kind of workload. Currently seeing the business requirements it is heavily being seen as an alternative for current virtualised platform due to commercials and non flexibility in the offering from legacy platforms.

  • Compatibility with SAP workload
  • Complexity in setting up the build incase of migration, like network, storage configuration which are done manually can also be automated.

I use Red Hat OpenShift AI to develop AI solutions within my team
It makes it easy to explore, test, and deploy AI solutions quickly. We are trying to create solutions for energy systems, like forecasting and anomaly detection systems. Red Hat OpenShift provides a nice interface o walk me through the steps of creating models for this use-case.

Great solution for virtualization

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using Red Hat OpenShift as a replacement for our current virtual solution and to modernize our environment. We are replacing 4 production clusters and 3 lab clusters. Beginning with just virtualization but with an eye toward implementing more containerized workloads, pipelines, and a hybrid cloud strategy in the long run.

  • Simplified migration via the Migration toolkit for Virtualization
  • Easy access to useful metrics and information

  • Increased visibility from Multi-cluster managment would be nice

  • hardcoded features (especially on IPI implementations)
  • lack of clarity on documentation, specifically for HCP scenarios
  • support sometimes is not excellent

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are a heavy consumer of Red Hat OpenShift. We use Red Hat OpenShift to host applications that do not currently use or need persistent storage. We have over 200,000 running containers across 64 clusters, and it solves the problem of moving away from the monolithic architecture and utilize microservices which Red Hat OpenShift easily allows us to do.

Pros

  • Easily deploy Kubernetes Pods in a user friendly way
  • Great support for the product when issues arise in the environment
  • Maintenance and patching the environment is easier than ever

Cons

  • Sometimes alerting can be genetic and hard to troubleshoot, usually the alert is indirectly correlated to another issue
  • Sometimes the UI can be slow at responding to listing pods, containers, etc

We use Red Hat OpenShift to run a variety of both containers and virtual machines. We have multiple clusters, consisting of bare-metal, VMware-based, and Nutanix-based. This allows us to test a variety of deployment scenarios alongside various tools and applications. This also allows us to create temporary environments for development testing, multi-cluster tool testing, etc.

  • Ease of deployment on a variety of infrastructure providers.
  • Tight integration with other Red Hat products.
  • Strong catalog of Red Hat and third-party operators

Cons

  • Documentation could be more detailed and include graphical aides.
  • Better partnerships could assist with automated bare-metal provisioning.
  • More reference architectures for accommodating various use cases, with detailed instructions or resources for repeating them.

SUSE Rancher and Tanzu Application Platform
The Tanzu Platform seemed overly complicated, and the frequent changes to the portfolio as well as the messaging made us uneasy. We also decided it would not be wise to tie our application platform to a specific infrastructure provider, as Tanzu cannot be deployed on anything other than vSphere.
SUSE Rancher seemed good overall, but ultimately felt closer to a DIY approach versus the comprehensive package that Red Hat OpenShift provides.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Provide storage service on OpenShift. I want to install OpenShift on bare metal using the RHEL kickstart model. I know this is an engineering ask, but it will help a lot with CI/CD and automation.

Pros

  • Excellent console.
  • Certified operators.
  • Keeping up to date with K8s.

Cons

  • Installer could be made better for homelabs/CI/CD.
  • It should be easier to configure the base operators like RHEL Anaconda allows.
  • DNS and DHCP settings section in the installer config to setup certs automatically.

I think Red Hat OpenShift is the best distribution of Kubernetes for on-premises installation.
