I never encounter some situations for what I need where Oracle SQL Developer is not.
Oracle's SQL Developer is used throughout the IT department at my company. It is extremely useful for querying our various databases. It is used for researching, troubleshooting, fixing (insert, update, delete), etc. It is a very powerful tool and is critical to our IT department's daily functionality. I have personally been using SQL Developer since it was first released in approximately 2006-2007.

You can easily export your results into a variety of formats such as Excel, CSV, Insert statements, etc.
The product allows you to store your database connections so you only need to select from a drop-down which database (or which user account) you want to use to execute a query or script.
You can view all database objects under specific schemas or user accounts and drill down to the most granular details.
Cons
There are a fair number of bugs that are identified in the product regularly, but Oracle generally releases updates several times per year to address issues and introduce new features.
Although you can collapse certain sections of code, it is not always reliable and sometimes auto-expands.
Some settings are not retained from session to session. For example, I like specific columns to be expanded in my results so I can see the entire value.

Even with very limited knowledge, you can benefit from this product since it can help you along if needed. There are even some built-in reports which can be run for common tasks or to be used as a template for new queries you may need to create. On the flip side, I would not recommend this tool for business users with no experience with SQL. SQL Developer is much more user-friendly and powerful than the old-school SQL*Plus, but you still need to have some basic understanding of how to work with databases.

SQL Developer is an indispensable tool used primarily for data mining and analysis. We have data in many repositories and using proper drivers we can connect to various back ends and merge data. Most non technical personnel do not have knowledge to perform SQL queries so we find using SQL Developer very useful in this regard. We like that we can also interface with SQL Server. So primarily we use it for data mining and analysis.

For accessing our databases Oracle SQL Developer is a very popular tool in our company. It being available for free, it is also capable of interfacing with SQL Server. It is very simple to use and provides a great value to all the departments.

They need to improvise on extraction of data. It is really a great tool for any type of SQL queries. It can be used for custom queries and reports. This being free, it has a lot of features compared to other non-free tools. Hence, I would always want to use SQL Developer.

SQL Developer is used by other teams throughout the organization for various other purposes. By using SQL Developer, I am able to quickly and easily write, execute and debug queries. I am also able to generate and explain plans to help me evaluate and tune queries for the greatest performance.

It would be helpful if one could quickly and easily integrate another editor into this tool. Although the provided editor is quite useful, other 3rd-party editors are much more powerful.
SQL Developer should be able to easily integrate with source control providers other than GIT and Subversion.
The syntactical auto-completion should allow some keystroke to complete and suggested statement rather than requiring a mouse-click to accept the suggestion.

SQL Developer is well-suited for querying large data sets. Its performance is very good and it limits the returned result-sets to prevent the return of massive datasets in an interactive environment.
SQL Developer is less appropriate for end users querying database tables. The interface is designed more towards developers and less towards end users.
