Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using Solarwinds Database Performance Analyzer for few of our customers to help in monitoring their Database Environment which includes Microsoft SQL, Postgre SQL, Oracle etc. Solarwinds DPA is primarily used by Database Administrators, Application Engineers (Read Only) and Tools Administrators. There are few interaction with Key Management stakeholders for data analysis but its relatively less.

Likelihood to Recommend

Solarwinds Database Performance Analyzer is well suited in below Scenarios -
1. End to End Database Instance Monitoring.
2. Database in Clusters Monitoring such as Availability Group in MS SQL, CDB in Oracle etc
3. If you want detailed monitoring with historical analysis.
4. SQL Statement Deep Dive Analysis for WAIT Time reason, Blockers, Deadlocks etc

Solarwinds DPA is not well suited if you are looking for Detailed VM, OS monitoring where Database is installed.

Used to monitor production database performance and identify areas for tuning.

Pros

Allows instant identification of highest impact performance issues
Provides visibility of database load across the application
Easy to configure and use

Cons

It's a great product. I really can't identify any cons.

It's useful for DBAs as well as application developers, by providing visibility of performance issues in an easy to understand graphical format. It then allows you to drill into the issue and identify how to resolve.

A good tool to analyze DB performance.

Needs 24/7 support.

I feel that SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer makes it easy to identify DB issues and helps us to resolve performance problems proactively. We implemented SolarWinds DPA on more than 450 servers in the last year, but sometimes we are facing an issue with data collection. Also, there is no 24/7 support, so it's very hard to reach the support team during the US night time.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it across our department to monitor our database landscape. We have different flavors of databases across our landscape, and SolarWinds for years has been an important part of the strategy for our monitoring solutions for the database tier across the landscape. It is very intuitive and quite easy to implement.

Pros

Immediate bottlenecks on the database tier.
Performance tuning.
Historical reports.

Cons

More details around the specific alerts which are raised on the console should be considered.
More information from a host layer monitoring could be handy as well.
A single layout for the report for all the different instances of DPA would be really handy. It is just tedious to go granular for all the instances across the landscape.

Likelihood to Recommend

Very intuitive and easy for operations organizations to ensure that any symptoms which could lead to performance concerns on the database tier can be easily identified and looked at.
To ensure these issues can be given highest priority as and when any performance bottlenecks arise, the simple layout provided with the tool is really effective.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer to predict the behavior of our campaigns and e-marketing. With SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer, we can check the performance of our databases and how the behavior will be during high load works in the season and spikes that are associated with our day by day jobs.

Pros

Predict performance across all databases
Predict unexpected behavior
Make a correct forecast about how much memory and CPU could be needed for a particular job

Cons

The agent usually consumes a lot of memory
High cost, since it is charged per instance.
An efficient and intelligent search feature would be helpful.

Likelihood to Recommend

SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer is a really good software for monitoring purposes. If your company is e-marketing related, this is a good tool since you can see the overall trends and issues that cause a significant effect on performance when campaigns are being sent. But it is not good enough for deep dives into specific issues related to Database.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use DPA to locate issues within our application communicating with SQL. We also look for any long running queries that can be tuned to be more efficient. It has helped us narrow down several issues in our application code.

Pros

Detailed information on SQL queries.
Good analysis of where problems are occurring.
The lookups are very quick.

Cons

The cost of this tool is pretty high, especially when using other SolarWinds products.
A more user-friendly UI would be helpful.

Likelihood to Recommend

If your app interfaces with SQL in any way, you should give DPA a try. It has been helpful in identifying several queries that needed tuning. It's also pointed us towards issues in our code that needed to be modified to run better.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

There are three ways we use DPA -
- Daily review by one of our team members to see anomalies.
- Drilling down while troubleshooting ongoing issues.
- Setting up reports to keep the hard record of a baseline.

Since DPA is a wait time oriented monitoring tool, it perfectly completes other homemade SQL scripts used to monitor and troubleshoot performance.

Pros

An easy way to get the status of the databases.
An easy way to drill down.
Ability to see at glance the current database health.

Cons

It's not very intuitive when "zoom in" "zoom out" needed while looking at performance. Eventually, you figure this out. But it would be better to see all events sharing the same timeline.
Some minor issues with web implementation that include auto login. Probably related to cookie handling.

Likelihood to Recommend

After working with a bunch of other solutions I admit the best advantage of DPA is a design around wait-events. That's exactly what others are always missing while providing a deep performance analysis. At the end of the day, the most important thing is how long database consumers have to wait for a particular transaction to be finished.
