What is Omnissa Horizon?

A VDI solution used for the secure delivery of virtual desktops and apps from on-premises to the cloud. It is used to deploy, manage, monitor and scale desktops and apps across private, hybrid and multi-cloud infrastructure using a cloud-based console and SaaS management services.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it for empoyees who work remotely. It provides a secure and easy remote access while protecting the data. It is used by the teams in my organization that work from home. This enables them to login to the client environment from anywhere, while ensuring compliance, data security and seamless collaboratin.

Pros

Very little or no latency even on moderate connectivity; graphic quality is really high even on slow networks
Multi-factor authentication (MFA), encryption, and implementation/enforcement of policies
Easy integration with third party tools and VM Ware

Cons

For somebody without much experience on VDIs, the configuration is a bit difficult
The integration with legacy sustems like our own CRM tool is not really seamless.
Mobile functionality needs improvement. It is there as of now but could be a lot better.

It hleps with faster onboarding, of temp staff or new hires
Employees productivity is improved as they can access work environment from any device
This works as best business continuity plan as it can be accessed remotely.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are using VMware Horizon to manage on-prem applications that could not be accessed outside of the organizations network. With VMware Horizon in place, we can now access critical services when even working from home. We no longer use VPN.

Pros

Onboarding application is smooth
File sharing is ok when using the desktop application
Connectivity to environment is much easier with a stable network

Cons

They can improve on the client application, you should be able to share files same as you can do on the desktop version

Return on Investment

Remote working has been made easier with all applications needed onboarded to VMware Horizon platform.
No need to open many firewalls. This has really taken away stress from working remotely.
Horizon has given us better experience in terms of stability compared to the VPN connections we used earlier. The VPNs kept disconnecting at regular intervals and was very difficult to complete task.

We have been using Omnissa Horizon (formerly VMware) for 8 years now. We migrated from Desktop PC's to VDI desktops. It has been an incredible and transformative journey for us. Our company now is built around utilizing Omnissa Horizon for 98% of our employees. The decoupling of their desktops from the physical hardware has made business continuity rock solid and the strain on the IT department was reduced as much as 75%.

Our entire company is now modelled around using Omnissa Horizon for our employees
It has been very positive allowing for much more efficient use of time by the IT department.
The ROI is hard to pin down because of so many factors but even if the costs were the same as physical PC, all the additional benefits far outweigh the implementation and transition costs.

We use Omnissa Horizon for our VDI infrastructure. It allows end users to both remotely connect to their physical PCs and to also connect to VMs from on and offsite all without the use of VPNs or anything special besides the Omnissa Horizon client or even just a web browser. It works with MFA for security and is easy to setup.

Pros

Allows access to download owned products.
Makes managing and accessing our licenses easy.
Opening a support ticket is relatively easy.

Cons

In my experience, Support is non-existent. I've had tickets closed w/o any replies and while the problem still existed.
In my experience, their website for documentation, FAQs, etc. is full of dead links that still point to VMware sites.
Configuration of all facets of the software are in multiple places. For example, some things are controlled via Group Policy, some still use INI or cfg files, and some can only be set within the software itself.

Return on Investment

In my opinion, when it works, it works great and allows users to connect from anywhere.
I think it is a very fragile piece of infrastructure and can stop working w/o any real reason.
In my experience, getting support, especially when your environment is down, is very difficult.

I deployed this solution for one of our company's client organization. That organization was speared over multiple location and worker were allowed to do work from home. it was not feasible for that organization to deliver hardware to every location and maintain the other aspects of hardware maintenance. In such situations, VMware Horizon Cloud was their choice. It is a cloud based VDI that enables the management of operating system in cloud. It is cost-effective solution in terms of hardware, flexible solution without the need for hardware dependency, In case of any incident, an easy and efficient way to restore or recover data. moreover, features like monitoring, resource utilization, multi-factor authentication makes this solution more feasible in terms of Security and performance.

Pros

Endpoints Management become very easy.
No Hardware labilities
More features and easy to maintain.

Cons

Managing the VDI needs training which should be freely available to everyone.
Cost could be the constraints for SMBs to adopt this model. For managing VDI you need trained IT Staff
