Considered Both Products
Barracuda Email Protection
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
We used Zix before migrating to M365 with a different mail server company. It was okay, but didn't offer all of the features Barracuda did at basically the same price point.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Barracuda Essentials has a far easier admin pannel than is provided by mimecast along with far more filtering options such as dkim. Much easier to do the initial setup along with much better support provided. Barracuda Essentials has Advanced threat protection that uses AI to …
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
365 defender has a tool for user security training, it is much more rudimentary than Barracudas, but the interface is much nicer. Both offer email attack testing, reporting, and training, but barracuda offers additional attack types, like file and SMS testing. Both seem to …
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
No-nonsense platform with very competitive pricing as it is bundled with an anti-spam mail solution (email gateway).
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Barracuda Security Awareness Training from Barracuda Networks was already included in our TEP environment.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Integration with existing Barracuda products and a large library, lots of features.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
I didn't evaluate other products yet or don't need to, this has been recommended to me.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Offered more choices and a deeper library. Reporting was also easier to present to customers.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Diversity of campaigns, library depth, and integration with the security stack.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
It was recommended by a number of people and we were impressed by Altinet
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
We used internal cyber security training, yearly one hour mandatory, Barracuda enhances this program.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Barracuda is our leading backup solution for our customers so the product fits well
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Barracuda is much more price-conscious and offers a total package of security products along with their training. I believe SANS training is much deeper and offers a more diverse training program, as well as ramifications for those gamified users or those not passing initial …
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Both products are very similar in providing a complete package for security awareness training, education, assessment, and ongoing evaluation. KnowBe4 has more functionality for the gamification aspect and a slightly richer template base for phishing simulations. Barracuda …
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
We have been a long-standing customer of Barracuda Backups Cloud to Cloud and Main Backups so this was a logical extension of what we had already been doing and the positive results we had been receiving on the other products
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Our decision for phishing awareness training was based on multiple factors, we wanted an all-in-one suite for email protection and awareness training for the company. Barracuda security sweet covered everything we needed but the company's needs. We didn't want a piecemeal from …
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
The simulation can't be scheduled. They are by default scheduled 2 weeks after the end of the module. No customization in the training. The training path is not flexible. Users are forced to go through different topics one after another. It's not possible to choose for example …
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Barracuda offers a large, feature-rich platform that deeply integrates with their other email security products. It is easy to set up and it offers a large library of English campaigns
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
More detailed library overall, better reports and better integration with security stack
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Better prepared campaigns in the library and more detailed platform with lots of features.
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Overall the products are very similar however as Barracuda offers a one-stop shop for email security and awareness training this is better preferred from an IT Admin Perspective
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Very far behind other platforms such as KnowBe4, i alsmot get the impression that Barracuda is a 10 year + older product that is no longer able to compete with the newer products. A complete overhaul is required to make it user friendly and competitive again. Phishline looks …
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Barracuda Cloud-to-Cloud Backup, Barracuda Essentials and Barracuda Backup
Chose Barracuda Email Protection
Easier to launch a campaign compared to Sophos, better analytics suite. The phishing simulations are more convincing. Plan is cheaper overall too.
AppRiver from OpenText
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
At the time, Rackspace was too expensive, and Microsoft only sold to partners. AppRiver was reasonable and easy to work with. Now AppRiver from Zix, will only host our clients: They will not handle any support for our customers, as they use to.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
From AppRiver to Office 365, the support crew was exceptionally detailed and helpful. For new users, distribution groups, members on lists, and adding supplementary email addresses to current profiles for my teams, they led me through the process.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
AppRiver wins for customer support, cost, efficiency, and speed.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
AppRiver takes Microsoft 365 and simplifies the billing, provisioning, and support, to the point that we no longer have to deal with Microsoft directly, are able to simply focus on the product, rather than all the settings, setup, and all the other headaches typically …
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
AppRiver provides extra services that our previous email service provider did not. SharePoint had extra email security features - for the price.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
We evaluated several other vendors that I won't mention by name but found their partner program to be less attractive. If you are already using Office 365, give AppRiver a try. I think you will be pleased.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
I have no experience with other platforms.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
I used to love Rackspace but they have dropped. I still have some customers using their hosting but I'm slowly bringing them over to AppRiver.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
Sherweb: looked at them, but after talking and researching what other users were saying, we decided to use AppRiver. AppRiver's tech support wins out every time.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
Never used similar product.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
AppRiver's securetide spam filter is good, but I will say, it's the one product we moved away from. We switched to ProofPoint for email threat protection, and ProofPoint's quarantine notice and some other advanced features, at the time of our switch, were clear improvements …
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
We have been using AppRiver since our company inception and have not had any reason to look elsewhere or consider other options. We continue to be pleased with AppRiver.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
Many clients use GoDaddy for their email hosting. If you want to see a night and day difference in support, AppRiver is the way to go. I hate waiting on hold with GoDaddy, transferring through their automated menus, finding clients trapped in year-long commitments for email …

We switched for a reason.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
At the time, 5 years ago, we switched from Intermedia to Appriver based on price and portal features. AppRiver had better pricing, did support themselves, and integrated Office 365 into their own customer portal for easy management. They were the only ones at the time. I cannot …
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
We have not evaluated any other products offered by AppRiver other than what we currently use. We have what we need.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
There was one other company that I evaluated in the area but clearly made my decision based on a recommendation from someone that was also an AppRiver customer.
Chose AppRiver from OpenText
In the past, we have just gone directly through Microsoft. This was generally easy, and the support Techs knowledgeable, but could take an hour to get to a tech and the tech was often difficult to understand. Microsoft is trying to discourage going directly through them now, …

Initially we were using Microsoft Office 365 for licensing, an on-premise Exchange server for e-mail, and The E-mail Laundry for spam filtering. After months of unsuccessful attempts to migrate our e-mail to Office 365, AppRiver was the only solution that successfully …

We used Postini as our email filtering for a couple of years until it was purchased by Google. We continued on with Google because we didn't want to have the pain of migrating to another platform. But, we research and decided on AppRiver. The migration over was very simple and …

Likelihood to Recommend
I would definitely recommend it due to the decent pricing. I wish the MS built-in M365 tools were better, but Barracuda does a good job of taking their place. For industries that need DLP on their email, like healthcare, banking, and education, Barracuda provides a reliable product for a good cost. The additional services you get, malware/AV filtering, URL filtering, spam protection, business continuity, those are all icing on the cake. The only issues we've ever really had with them is that it will sometimes take a back/forth string of emails and decide randomly to encrypt it, so what was a flowing benign conversation is now locked behind a wall for recipients. As the sender, you have no idea when it's going to decide to do this and have to remember to tag emails with a decrypt tag long before it happens or face the consequences

I would highly recommend AppRiver for inbound email filtering. We have been very pleased with the performance and the ease of use. The occasional email does get through, but I have had that happen on any email filtering we have used in the past. Great product and great support as well

Pros
  • The software helps us create emails that look exactly or almost exactly the same as the phishing emails we found in our email gateway.
  • We already use the ESS gateway from Barracuda Networks, and in the TEP bundle, this software is included, so it's not that much work to also configure this.
  • In the software, we can see reports on how our users performed. We can make a selection of users that are more prone to click on "false" links, and this way, we can help them individually.

  • Ease of management for a MSP. Even though there is no integration w/ PSA tools currently, I don't see this as a negative. The management is multi-tenant and simple to navigate.
  • Support via chat is fast and very competent. Only downside is they are just available during extended business hours, not 24x7 on the chat.
  • Reselling Office 365 is very simple and gives us an advantage over our competitors. Includes pre sales support and post sale support.
  • Encrypted email services act much like others, it works very well and includes and Outlook Plug in to make it obvious you intend to send messaged encrypted.
  • Email continuity. Email queuing is included, so if your onsite server goes down, mail queues at the spam filter until service is restored. You can step it up w/ their email continuity service which give you access to your mail at the spam filter in cases where your mail server is down for an extended period of time.

Cons
  • The #1 feedback I receive from users is that they have limited time for training. It would be nice if the training would be offered in 3-time categories (e.g. up to 3 minutes, up to 5 minutes and up to 10 minutes). This way user's can select a category that matches their availability.

  • We had an issue with bills coming to us instead of going directly to the client that took a little longer to fix than we would have preferred.
  • It would be nice if the bills included the domain name. When I was receiving my client's bill, it was difficult to tell which domains the bill was for.
  • Cost a little more than from Microsoft directly.

Although cost competitive, we still feel like we are not digging deep enough to train our staff. We have little to no way other than digging through reports that have not proven to be adequately documented (hey you, Barracuda campaign reports) to identify and require users to take more training who have not passed their requirements.

Usability
Regarding usability, we like it to be an easy solution to implement and configure on the server. Routine backups are made frequently and reports are issued for control and analysis by information security teams. It has great integration with the cloud and encryption.

Support Rating
I have not had to use customer support yet which goes to show the effectiveness of the program. It also shows how easy the program is to use for the average person with no experience using this type of program. Our IT department also does a great job at teaching us to detect emails with malware that in combination with this software issues rarely arise even though we have over 500 employees.

AppRiver's live support is above what I expected, and I use it exclusively. I always get a professional, courteous, and knowledgeable tech that is easy to understand within a few minutes of placing a call. If you do have to leave a message they have always promptly returned my call.

Alternatives Considered
We really didn't evaluate any other products. We considered using the filtering features that come with our Office 365 subscription, but just didn't feel it was sufficient protection for our business. Being a medical clinic, we felt like we needed to implement the best solution for our email protection and we found Barracuda Essentials was the leader.

Return on Investment
  • This tool was supplied free with out Email Security, so its come at no cost
  • This tool has helped us meet requirements by our insurance to train users on the risks of phishing
  • However, the dated interface slows down what should be seamless adoption

  • We were able to drop our email scanning software that was taking hours to clear the cache of emails daily. The reduction in delays on email scanning improved our efficiency as emails take seconds to minutes to get to where they are going not hours.
  • Encrypted email service (Cypher-Post) is difficult to use as well as our recipients do not like how difficult it is to use. The stub emails that contain links often get deleted because people are trained not to click on links in emails. This has caused substantial delays in people getting emails from us.
