Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)Intermapper
Considered Both Products
Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
We admire for some main reasons, Cisco's Prime LAN Management Solution is our best choice — It provides detailed information about network device mapping. Configuration management is critical when using wireless technology. Solarwinds and Micro Focus, while powerful, lack …
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
Although there are many powerful tools available in the market such as Solarwinds, Micro Focus, CA Spectrum with advanced configuration options and customization options available still Cisco Prime [LAN Management Solution] is the preferred tool for following reasons -
1. If you …
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
There are various 3rd party tools available in the market which not only supports monitoring of cisco devices but also supports non-cisco devices, even with these capabilities in these 3rd party tools Cisco Prime has maintained a uniqueness in its products being the native tool …
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
None. As we have a large Cisco footprint and no other network equipment brands in place, Cisco Prime was the obvious choice in our case.
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
Provides vital stats and a little more granular detail on wireless access points and controllers. Can manage the devices from Cisco Prime as well.
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
As our network depends on Cisco devices, so it was logic to choose Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution to manage these devices. Also, WhatsUp Gold can monitor devices but can't manage them or give more statistics on devices like Prime. Also, from the Prime side, we can see the …
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
Cisco has more features and integrated with our existing Cisco wireless infrastructure seamlessly.
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
It's obvious that Cisco has all the knowledge of their own products, such as switches, routers, etc., and Cisco Prime LAN Management Solution works well integrated with them. Also, you can use Cisco Prime with non-Cisco products and have some benefits. No other product can have …
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
Best tool for wireless maps and predictions.
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
We use both solutions, Cisco Prime has better information, but WhatsUp Gold has better alerting
Chose Cisco Prime LAN Management (discontinued)
Both are best in their field, but as I said earlier if you have Cisco AP with 5700 controllers it is a must to have Cisco Prime Infrastructure.
Intermapper
Chose Intermapper
We have been using Intermapper for years and have been satisfied with it to the point that we haven't looked at competitors. The maintenance cost is very low and the product does exactly what we expect and need it to do. The product has gone through a couple owner transitions …
Chose Intermapper
Intermapper is a cross between WhatsUp Gold and Nagios. Whatsup gold being for a less technical end-user and Nagios doing more than just SNMP scans and up down monitoring.
Chose Intermapper
We felt, with both pricing and level of complexity, that Intermapper was the right solution. We looked at WhatsUpGold, but the price was too high for us at the time. We looked at Nagios, which is free, but we didn't find it intuitive.
Chose Intermapper
I selected Intermapper because it was so easy to customize the display to exactly what we wanted. I wanted something that changed colors based on availability and something that we could display on TV's for our NOC. This fit all the criteria perfectly.
Chose Intermapper
I have 15 years invested in Intermapper, so my inertia to keep from changing is relatively high, and the cost to do so would be higher than just renewing the license each year. Traditionally though, Intermapper requires less work to get going, and less work to implement a given …
Chose Intermapper
Some of these other packages have some very sophisticated capabilities that Intermapper lacks. The problem is, not too many IT departments have the bandwidth to set them up properly and us the sophisticated features and maintain them. So why not get something that does what you …
Chose Intermapper
We used to use What's up Gold for our network monitoring but Intermapper seems to have better mapping capabilities. We used to use Ciscoworks for monitoring our routers and switches but it was limited to just those network devices and was a pain to set up and manage. We …
Chose Intermapper
InterMapper offers a cheaper and easier network map over SolarWinds Orion Network Atlas. It lacks SolarWinds graphs, reports and statistics. For monitoring, alerting and at a glance information, InterMapper is hard to beat for the price.

Cisco Prime can monitor faults and performance, generate heat maps, manage device configuration, and alert. The tools that we find will help us identify wireless access points, network switches, and everything in between. It's simple to manage a dozen devices, but hundreds or thousands require a platform like Cisco LMS. Its bulk configuration and backup configuration features are crucial. We can also access dashboards that show admins and technicians the network's health at a glance.

If you've never mapped your network out before, download a demo of Intermapper and let it run. Your jaw will drop as your network grows before your eyes. If you have your network already mapped, you still would like InterMapper because it will find stuff you did not even know you have. If I were a network consultant, the first thing I would do when I hit a client's site is to start a scan with Intermapper. You will very quickly learn what the topography is.

Pros
  • You can deploy from simple snippets of config to a whole template to multiple devices at the same time. That saves us a lot of time (remember that time is money) when we need to change some setting globally, like adjust a ACL or add new global policy. Doesn't matter how many models of the same equipment you have.
  • The Network Topology map is also a great tool for troubleshooting. You can check several aspects of the topology, the connection between the equipment, the status of the connections and even check specific alarms related to that part of the topology (or map). Again, consider that in a multi site, global environment and you'll see the benefits.
  • Inventory and firmware updates are also great tools inside the solution. You have check exactly what equipment is outdated and schedule an update with a couple of clicks. You can do that also in a batch, saving a lot of time (and money) and avoid to go handle the equipment one by one, sometimes even needing to have physical access to those equipment.

Cons
  • Prime can be be difficult to use in some cases where the UI falls short in doing things effeciently
  • Prime maps can take quite a while to load with lots of APs
  • Locations for certain key functions are sometimes buried away behind menus that don't pertain to it

  • I don't have many complaints with Intermapper. It's a pretty simple tool for what we use it for, and it has worked well for us.

The product works well and is very easy to maintain. As such, we haven't had many occasions to use support. When we have called them they were easy to contact and responsive to our questions. We have had the product for years and it may have been a year or better since the last time we contacted them.

Alternatives Considered
Although there are many powerful tools available in the market such as Solarwinds, Micro Focus, CA Spectrum with advanced configuration options and customization options available still Cisco Prime [LAN Management Solution] is the preferred tool for following reasons - 1. If you have only Cisco Infrastructure then go for Cisco Prime Blindly. 2. Extensive information on network devices mapping layout. 3. Devices configuration management specially for wireless.

Return on Investment
  • It has helped us with our quarterly wireless security testing by pinpointing the location of non-approved access points vs. hunting for them via signal strength.
  • Saves time by helping to identify network health issues before they become a definitive problem causing downtime.
  • With errors detected early, we have noticed our wi-fi network is much more stable thus freeing up our engineer's time elsewhere.

  • Allowed us to find issues we had no idea were happening with our network hardware in closets.
  • Able to pull network hardware inventory easily.
