Considered Both Products
Citrix Profile Management (discontinued)
Chose Citrix Profile Management (discontinued)
Well, I really did not select it, but generally, as those products and solutions are very expensive and purchased on a corporative level, I used them as a user or a system IT manager... Citrix has almost no competitors that we can call like that really... it's the de-facto …
Chose Citrix Profile Management (discontinued)
We have looked at other products over the last few years and none of these products have proven to be a better fit for our practice that Citrix receiver. It is easy to manage and is very power[ful]. When it comes to remote access, Citrix is the best in the business.
Chose Citrix Profile Management (discontinued)
We decided to use Citrix UPM because it was included in our XenDesktop purchase. There was no additional cost for us to do so. It extends the features of Microsoft Roaming Profiles.

Chose Ivanti Environment Manager
Fast deployment, very customizable. Improved user logon times.
Chose Ivanti Environment Manager
The decision to use AppSense was not mine. If I had to choose a product today, I would at least want to evaluate the alternative from RES Software - from what I have read/heard it sounds like the better choice as far as reliability, support, and lack of bugs. I have not …

This allows remote workers great flexibility. You can setup working profiles that are tailored to the end users' needs to assist them in being more productive. This also allows you to view idle sessions to see how productive your remote end users are. You can set timers to only allow access during certain times of day. You can also set auto log off for sessions.

Most general situations can be managed from within Citrix. AppSense is needed only in complex situations that require more granular control of the environment.

Pros
  • Virtualization
  • Start a remote desktop
  • Manage a remote desktop screen inside Windows

  • Application Manager - automatic elevation of certain software to run with admin rights, transparent to users IF you set it all up properly in advance. Once you have this configured, it can be very beneficial.
  • Environment Manager - custom actions based on detected conditions. For example, mapping one set of network drives once a user connects to a certain network, and a different set of network drives when they connect to a different network. And automatically remove the network drives when the user disconnects from the network. Do X, Y, and Z if a certain process starts or stops. If process A starts, automatically start process B.

Alternatives Considered
Well, I really did not select it, but generally, as those products and solutions are very expensive and purchased on a corporative level, I used them as a user or a system IT manager... Citrix has almost no competitors that we can call like that really... it's the de-facto standard nowadays but I feel like that sense of supremacy and overall superiority threw Citrix company into a dark tunnel of blindness and missing opportunities conditions of leveraging the product to the next level and taking the opportunity to innovate and do more with less. Just take into consideration the MB heaviness of the Citrix Profile Management installer... it grows years after years... many MB and... the same solution and option... what a shame!

The decision to use AppSense was not mine. If I had to choose a product today, I would at least want to evaluate the alternative from RES Software - from what I have read/heard it sounds like the better choice as far as reliability, support, and lack of bugs. I have not personally used it yet though.

Return on Investment
  • By far the best ROI for using UPM is that it's included with many Citrix offerings.
  • The only negative ROI might be time spent setting up UPM then deciding to change solutions.

  • Saved a lot on storage costs
  • Improved the user experience.
