Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I'm a user of Citrix Profile Management in my organization. I always thought it was not a real software or a program, just a utility as the installation and configuration were well-made by the system administrators of the company I was working for. As for me, it's a kind of transparent utility.

Pros

  • Virtualization
  • Start a remote desktop
  • Manage a remote desktop screen inside Windows

Cons

  • Improve UX-UI
  • When there's an error starting the remote desktop, offer a trouble-shooting wizard.
  • Improve maximize-minimize-full screen remote desktop functionality.

Most Important Features

  • Open remote desktops.
  • Configure several profiles as required.
  • Configure distinct permissions for each profile.

Return on Investment

  • Saving on hardware purchase because virtually you can run a super powerful ERP with an old Intel i3 CPU.
  • You need and should invest anyway and anyhow on robust, strong, stable internet connections and load balancing solutions to use Citrix products at the best.
  • Implementing a new ERP solution based on Citrix remote desktop and profiles in almost no time after the connection infrastructure part is solved.

Alternatives Considered

UPM is worth a try but don't expect the world

Pros

  • UPM does extend the features of Microsoft roaming profiles. It gives you the ability to load ADM files and create group policies to set settings.
  • With UPM you are able to include or exclude files and folders in a user's profile.
  • There are some tie ins between UPM and Citrix Director to give administrators the ability to quickly see the size of the user's profile.

Cons

  • Since UPM manages Microsoft roaming profiles you still face profile size challenges. You can use the exclude feature but it can be a bit limiting.
  • Because of size concerns this may not be the best choice for international deployments if you intend to roam settings across multiple environments.
  • Troubleshooting UPM can be a bit difficult at times. There are some built in logging features but those are best reviewed by Citrix.

Return on Investment

  • By far the best ROI for using UPM is that it's included with many Citrix offerings.
  • The only negative ROI might be time spent setting up UPM then deciding to change solutions.
