Considered Both Products
Cyberduck
Chose Cyberduck
Cyberduck has an intuitive, minimalist interface that makes it easy to open up and start using immediately. Plenty of features in the free plan to do almost everything needed.
Chose Cyberduck
Cyberduck is free to use and it also can access cloud storage like our backup servers.
Chose Cyberduck
I have not used similar featured cloud storage products though I can highly recommend Cyberduck due to its great services. It is easy to arrange and search any file while using drag and drop features. The overall performance in browsing and and transferring files has been …
Chose Cyberduck
The other ftp client I've used in the past has been Fetch. Fetch is a nice ftp client as well but there were no major differences in the two so as a business we decided on Cyberduck. I like the basic interface that Cyberduck has to offer versus the bubbly interface that Fetch …
Chose Cyberduck
While these other tools I've used will get the job done, neither of them were (a) as easy to set up and configure as Cyberduck, and (b) were as effective at ongoing management of files with my remote server. I think it's because Cyberduck has very specific configurations that …
Chose Cyberduck
I've found other FTP clients, like FileZilla, to be more cumbersome and less user-friendly. The interface of Cyberduck is more "simplified." For a power user, this may seem "dumbed down," but for me, it's struck a fantastic balance of usability and power. Plus, at the price, …
Chose Cyberduck
FileZilla and WinSCP are the two main alternatives to Cyberduck within my organization, and really the two main freeware competitors that I know of. Cyberduck is suited for those without a high level of technical background, and as one might guess, is also the easiest to use …
Foglight
Chose Foglight
Foglight is a tool that allows productivity to advance quickly and safely, offering data monitoring and optimization, guaranteeing the success of our business. It is a solution that provides relevant data for strategy and data analysis without losing sight of the final …
Chose Foglight
Foglight was chosen years ago as a replacement for Groundwork. After 2.5 years of implementing Groundwork things were still not complete and the decision to go with a more formalized solution was made. Foglight installed easily and quickly nearly across the board and the full …
Chose Foglight
We selected Foglight almost 6 years ago for its advancements in the APM space, moving toward a single pane of glass and their SaaS development. They have since abandoned the APM and SaaS offerings to focus solely on Database and Compute monitoring. This is why we are migrating …
Chose Foglight
We were previously using Oracle to monitor resources across servers and networks. In general, that product was alright but the Foglight alerts are far superior to Oracle. The business goal of using Foglight is really to minimize business interruption costs so the faster and …

Any time you need or want to use an ftp client, an app such as Cyberduck is perfectly suited. I feel it works best when you're working with another business or vendor. If you need to send files to a client that are too large for email, I typically use WeTransfer, but mainly because you don't need to sign in to use that.

It really depends on why my colleague is evaluating Foglight. If it is for Database monitoring and management, I highly recommend it. If it is for anything else, I would encourage them to look at others in this space.

Usability
I really like the basic interface and folder like structure. It makes me feel like I'm in a regular folder window on my Mac. Navigation is simple. The toolbar is customizable to be able to add or remove icons to improve the simplicity and ease of use of the application. The app is very simply designed, which I appreciate.

Support Rating
When I did have a support request, I was less than pleased with the response. Firstly, it took a while to get a response. Secondly, I don't even think they addressed me directly--I got an automated response showing me that they had created an issue for it to be worked on in an upcoming release/update for the app. While the problem did get fixed, it never feels great to essentially get a response saying, "we'll add that to our list and maybe fix it some time in the future."

Foglight was chosen years ago as a replacement for Groundwork. After 2.5 years of implementing Groundwork things were still not complete and the decision to go with a more formalized solution was made. Foglight installed easily and quickly nearly across the board and the full implementation for complex infrastructure was completed (with no Professional Services) by us in under 4 months. Nagios is a wonderful toolkit but you have to be ready to build what you need. It's flexibility and breadth are excellent features but with that comes the need to define things very tightly lest you embark on the project that never ends (see above about Groundwork). Dynatrace is an excellent APM tool and has advanced analytics but as a general infrastructure monitoring tool it is actually very expensive and to be honest does not have the same focus and full feature set that it does on it's APM (which to be fair is it's wheelhouse). vROPs (we also have) is a wonderful tool but focused (and rightly so) on satisfying the VMware engineers in the crowd and doesn't put itself out there too far to make things palatable for the non-engineering crowd.

Return on Investment
  • The amount of time it takes me to upload/download files is significantly less than alternatives I've tried. This has saved me countless hours... and, as they say, "time is money."
  • Cyberduck is also much easier to configure than other apps I've tried. Connecting to my remote server was very straightforward, and even a complete novice could do it without much trouble.
  • The ease of use for obtaining file download links is also both a time and energy saver. When I spend less time and effort on simple tasks, I can focus on other business matters that are more complex.
