What is ADP TotalSource?

ADP TotalSource is a professional employer organization (PEO) that provides strategic HR outsourcing. It includes services and technology to manage employee benefits, payroll, compliance, risk management, safety, and recruiting. Users have access to an online portal for things like self-service reporting, generating pay statements, and managing applicant resumes/interviews. Help from the service center and industry experts is available by phone.

Big Bureaucracy and No Accountability

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use ADP TotalSource for payroll as well as HR and benefits. We also use ADP TotalSource people to advise us on policies and procedures for both HR and safety

Pros

  • Safety consulting
  • Processing payroll on time

Cons

  • I feel that there is a complete lack of follow-through on problems. Problems get lost in their bureaucracy, and sometimes no one takes accountability.
  • I believe it has very poor user help function
  • In my experience, it has extremely poor reporting

Return on Investment

  • Negative impact in terms of employee satisfaction
  • Modest cost savings on workers compensation and employment practices liability insurance

Other Software Used

QuickBooks Online

ADP TotalSource a lot of tools packed into one software.

Pros

  • Payroll was easy to learn and use with time tracking in a short time frame
  • Tracking team members request offs and approving them were very easy
  • Customizing reports for specific periods of time. This made is very easy for end of year tracking for total hours worked and total dollars paid.

Cons

  • The system was really easy to use and the software was well built. We only had complaints with the customer service end.
  • When you contacted someone with a question, they would redirect you to a specific department. That department would sometimes take 3 - 4 days to get back in touch with you. This made for an inefficient working relationship.
  • During the sales calls we were promised the moon and that we would have a direct account manager. However, the manager was more like who we called to direct us to someone else. She never knew any details on any of our questions. (it was a waste of a position)

Return on Investment

  • ADP Totalsource had a negative impact on our overall return on our investment because of the poor customer service.
  • We spent a lot of money and put time and energy into the setup, we were happy with the product and willing to pay the higher payroll fees and just really unhappy with the customer service.
  • If the customer service would have been different and the fees not so high we would have stayed longterm. Again, they did not seem to be geared towards smaller businesses.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Leveraging the purchasing power of ADP, we were able to create a strong benefits offering for our employees. ADP Workforce Now also serves as an HRIS for us. We use it across our organization (100 employees), for the entire lifecycle of an employee. While the benefits package has served us well, in my experience, the customer service function is so poor that I wish we never partnered with them as a PEO.

Pros

  • Benefits value
  • Global Solution

Cons

  • Workforce Now as a software is very poor. I think it looks and feels like a platform created 15 years ago
  • In my experience, customer service is awful
  • In my experience, Workforce Now somehow manages to break itself frequently. I discover bugs on a weekly basis.
  • In my opinion, the promises the sales team make during the sale cycle is a smoke screen.
