AssetExplorer can be a very useful tool if planned and implemented properly

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

ManageEngine AssetExplorer is being used to track what major computer equipment is in production for the entire organization, store information on vendors the organization work with and have contracts with, and to inform us of when a contract/subscription is about to expire and has to be renewed. Lastly, we use it for the purchase order module as the core component for the procurement process within the organization that helps us track spending and compare prices between vendors who stock similar items.

Pros

  • Purchase Order Module is done reasonably well in order to build an intelligence database on vendors.
  • The network scan is useful to get up and running on getting existing equipment and software into the database.
  • Notifications concerning when subscriptions or contracts expire.
  • Vendor Database - Being able to keep track of all vendor information and uploading documentation such as contracts which can be found easily.

Cons

  • The reports in the purchase order module can definitely improve. I found it difficult to get the correct money spent for the criteria/filters entered. Some of the output looked erroneous and the query system wasn't the easiest to master.
  • The network scans can produce some information overload, especially if you do a full network scan. Maybe adjustments in the presentation of the software to guide users to do a more focused network scan for specific items at a time.

Likelihood to Recommend

The purchase order module can be very useful if you put a process in place. It is miles ahead of using a spreadsheet or something simple to do purchase orders and track spending.

It can be good to keep track of equipment and software you have in house. However it is imperative you have dedicated staff and processes in place to maximize the utility of the software else it can become a white elephant if not implemented properly as it is a complex piece of software that does many things.

ManageEngine AssetExplorer - Manage Your Network Assets

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use ManageEngine AssetExplorer to monitor and manage assets in our network. ManageEngine AssetExplorer is being used across the entire organization, approximately 200 people in 7 locations. It is great for discovering and managing assets on our network. The periodic scans and updates help us keep up to date with the status of our assets.

Pros

  • The asset discovery across the network is great.
  • The periodic scanning and updating of asset status is super valuable.
  • The software discovery is outstanding. Receiving list of installed software helps greatly with license compliance.

Cons

  • To my knowledge, there is not a mobile application.
  • The web interface could look a bit more polished, but this is really a minor area of improvement.

Likelihood to Recommend

You definitely only want to buy this product if you have the need. I'd say that need starts at about 40 assets. Less than that and you may be wasting your time with a a product that is overkill. We use it for about 1000 assets and it is a lifesaver. I couldn't imagine managing the assets manually.

The best way to track and control all of your IT and non-IT assets.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have deployed the manage engine agent in whole my LAN network in order to get tracked and inventoy all the IT assets, it help a lot when the department is being audited and at the momment that we planned to renew equipments. also it allows us to get tracket the assignment of our assets

Pros

  • Track your equipment by model, name, assigned user, serial number, service tag, etc.
  • Report generator in order to have all of the information you need, it can be globally or specify by criteria.
  • It allows us keep two or more sites to identify the location of the IT Assets
  • Get all the software information that is installed on the clients, that allows you to manage the licenses and versions.

Cons

  • You can fill the database and link it.
  • You can also add assets that aren't connected with the offline script, I would prefer to get a .exe but this import XML works well.
  • All is handled via the web, I would prefer a GUI standalone client.

This tool is ideal for use when you have a medium or large amount of assets and you need to have control of them. You can even create a form for those assets so non-IT staff can access it. As an analyst, this tool helps a lot with the inventory task. I think that you will always need a tool like this in your company.
