Don't Sleep on Blackberry's Cylance Protect!

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use this as one of many pieces of security software to protect all of our endpoints (be it laptops or servers (both physical and virtual)). There are multiple "policies" that we have in place, some completely block PowerShell from running on a specific users' machine while another one allows it for specific people based on their job functions.

Pros

  • Blocks PowerShell Scripting (when in a specific policy)
  • Blocks unwanted programs from running
  • Is able to determine what is used on a regular basis and allows it to run safely.

Cons

  • I wish it would be easier to safelist things based on install location (have a somewhat recurring issue with PhotoShop getting blocked after an update)
  • It can sometimes be a little over protective (which I guess isn't necessarily a bad thing)

Likelihood to Recommend

The policies that you make is where it's key. The "less you let people do, the better it will be" so to speak. So if you really clamp down on a policy and don't let people do specific things, then it'll be better for you. It also helps to protect the "not so tech savvy" people as well.

Basically the same thing as above, if you have users that need more flexibility, on occasion the policies might come into play and interfere if you're not careful.

CylancePROTECT is great

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to protect our endpoints from malware and malicious files. We need to have robust cybersecurity and this is one part of our overall security posture. We've had great success using it for many years and are satisfied with its performance.

Pros

  • Lightweight application
  • Does not require constant virus definitions
  • Easy to deploy, administer and use

Cons

  • Displaying more info about quarantined items
  • Making endpoint console better
  • Admin console is slightly confusing to use

Likelihood to Recommend

Protecting enterprise assets against modern threats.

Cylence didn't bring down OS due to kernal access

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Wanted a non definition based EDR, and CylancePROTECT was one of the first to do this. They lead the packed and with the recent announcement that Arctic Wolf is getting them, this adds to the powerful 1-2 punch for protection

Pros

  • non definition based detection signatures
  • predictive patterns

Cons

  • KB access and filtering

Likelihood to Recommend

Non definition based protection, needs to have a short learning cycle of the environments prior to full deployment.

Very happy with BlackBerry PROTECT

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It was initially deployed into our VMware Horizon VDI environment only. We wanted an antivirus program that was lightweight, offered quality protection, was centrally manageable, and was reasonably priced. PROTECT rose above other products we looked at.

Since that initial deployment we have rolled it out to all computers in our company (servers, desktop, laptops, and VDI desktops).

Pros

  • lightweight protection
  • central administration
  • advanced antivirus (AI-based, not signature-based)

Cons

  • I think it could be made more friendly to the non-expert security/AV admin

Likelihood to Recommend

environments where lightweight antivirus is required. It works well even when offline/disconnected, so it will also work well for remote or traveling users

Cyclance just works

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

[BlackBerry Protect (CylancePROTECT)] is used by one of our 3 Business Units and any new endpoints deployed by us to two other Business Units. Basically it is our AV and Endpoint protection for about 250 PCs. We also used it on servers which totals about 25 units in 2 datacenters. I love [BlackBerry Protect], it is like a good Mobster...shoot first, ask questions later. I would rather have a false positive than a false negative.

Pros

  • It not only stops executables from running, it blocks them from unzipping
  • It is more than signature based protection, it is full EDR
  • It has a great console with granular inventory and endpoint control

Cons

  • It would be nice if it knew more user information
  • Would be nice if reporting was fully automated

Likelihood to Recommend

If I had to recommend an endpoint AV solution, [BlackBerry Protect (CylancePROTECT)] would be on the list...in fact at the top of the current list. It is a cost effective solution. When we did the bakeoff in our selection we built 3 generic W10 PCs. We located a Malware repository on the internet and downloaded a package of 100. The first solution stopped 80% from installing, the second stopped 100%, [BlackBerry (CylancePROTECT)] would not let the package download! Winner winner chicken dinner :)

Cylance: Great Endpoint Protection

Rating: 7 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Endpoint protection for windows-based computers. Feeds to SIEM for correlation of events to other security intelligence and threat detection.

Pros

  • Behavior analysis
  • Integration with SIEM

Cons

  • Chaotic upgrades
  • Time consuming exception management

Likelihood to Recommend

For behavior-based endpoint protection, Cylance and its choices for automatically putting new machines into the highest protection zone, make installation and customization deferment reasonably uncomplicated. If you want distribution of upgrading so agents are on a disciplined cycle, then Cylance needs some specific work and extra tools to accomplish this.

A Great Anti-Virus Program

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have been using CylancePROTECT for 3 years now and it has met all of our expectations. The client is light-weight and doesn't use a lot of system resources in order to keep the computer safe. We have it deployed across the whole organization and it has been great. We haven't had one instance of ransomware since installing it on our system where we had one or two isolated events in the past.

Pros

  • Easy installation
  • Lightweight
  • Auto updates

Cons

  • Can be hard to setup.
  • Blocks a lot of stuff out of the box that are used daily in companies.
  • Hard to resolve issues sometimes.

Likelihood to Recommend

We are in the medical industry and this program is well suited for it. The client is not resource intensive and has not caused issues with a majority of our users. It has kept the company rather safe from ransomware attacks. We had one or two in the past but since the deployment of CylancePROTECT we haven't had any. We use it on all computers and works great for remote employees as well.

Cylance is used to protect our computing and network environment and provides virus protection for our users.

Pros

  • Works well with newer virus threats
  • Good updates for definition profiles
  • Reliable updates and implementation of newer revisions

Cons

  • Has minor issues with some windows processes.
  • Have to Black-list some application processes.
  • Has caused issues by preventing some applications to work correctly.

Likelihood to Recommend

Works well for local and remote computer users, Mac and PC.

CylancePROTECT | Genius

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use CylancePROTECT on 2,500 endpoints as a replacement for traditional anti-virus. This product proficiently addresses the limitations of traditional signature-based AV. We implemented this before WannaCry hit and proud to say it has been doing a sterling job for over 2 years now.

Pros

  • Reduces management stress due to higher levels of security assurance.
  • Reduces administrative time spent on console review and remediation.
  • Low resource utilisation, CPU, Ram, Disk.

Cons

  • Would like to see more granular control of USB.
  • More descriptive intel/info for alerts, eg: reasons why behind the algorithm.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's an awesome product which has now evolved into a full-blown EDR or MDR Solution if you choose CylanceGUARD. We have a simple checkbox ticked that alerts us if the local endpoint's windows hosts file is modified. This is pretty cool!

Cylance vs the wild, wild internet

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Is being used across our entire organization in place of traditional AV solutions. Powered by an internal AI, no cloud connection is required for it to defeat known and even unknown variants of bugs, viruses, and malware running in the wild today.

Pros

  • Easily managed from the cloud portal.
  • Doesn't require a connection to the cloud to be totally effective against threats.
  • Very easy to deploy in a domain environment.
  • Very easy to administer.
  • Notification when or if a threat is detected.
  • The client itself is protected from being stopped at the local PC level, a common thing that most threats do is stop the AV service from running.
  • Very easy to track what your top threats have been and mitigate them.

Cons

  • The dashboard is very clean, almost too clean. Could use some additional information made available.
  • Client over the past few years is getting fat.
  • Better logging and explanation of threats is needed.

Likelihood to Recommend

We're using it in an almost exclusively Windows environment and it's been flawless. Haven't deployed or spent much time on it within the Linux side. Have been waiting for a mobile client version of this for years. I hope with Blackberry acquiring them this will become a reality.
