This router can be used as the Internet edge router peering with BGP. We also use this router to establish site to site VPN to external business vendors. This enable us to have network connectivity with the Internet and with external business partners.

Pros

  • To establish connection with Internet Service Provider.
  • To establish site to site VPN connections with external partners.
  • Virtualize the router so we can handle different network segmentations.

Cons

  • Terminate Direct Internet Access connection with ISP. Run BGP routing to affect inbound and outbound Internet traffic.
  • Establish IPSec VPN connections to external partner. Run BGP routing to affect inbound and outbound traffic with different partner networks.
  • Using the VRF configuration to virtual the router to different network segments. This enables us to handle traffic to different partners independently.

Return on Investment

  • The router virtualization allows us to use single hardware to support different use-cases the same time, thus saving hardware investment.
  • The technical support from Cisco is very strong and is willing to advise on different configuration options to address the requirement.
  • Cisco equipment is more expensive than other router vendors, and the support cost isn't cheap either.

We have implemented Cisco Routers in our whole organization for over 40 years. They are indispensable in the network Infrastructure including the wired and wireless WAN, LAN, Cloud connections, and security enchantment. They are working well in the integration with other devices and platforms. The good design of Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) allow us easily to configure those routers.

  • They provide more reliable and stable connections
  • Longer life cycle compared with other vendors' devices

We use Cisco routers across the entire company. 64+ sites connecting everything from main offices, to branch offices, to OT sites.

Pros

  • They just work and continue to work.
  • Even the non-industrial routers have high environmental thresholds.
  • Easily deployable.
  • Long lifespan.

Cons

  • Cost.
  • Less cumbersome centralized management.
  • More modular options.

Return on Investment

  • Uptime is key for our business. Cisco routers positively deliver on that note.
  • There are some hardware restrictions we were unaware of regard SPAN ports that have negatively impacted our business.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use both the N540-24Z8Q2C0-M and N540-28Z4C-SYS for our Edge routers. We are primarily a L2 transport network. We use MPLS TE-Tunnels to transport our L2VPN's.

Pros

  • Well, I like the IOS-XR7 over XE.
  • The port density vs the size is good. (Probably no different to all other vendors I guess)

Cons

  • We have two versions of the NCS540, one issue I have is they run different versions of XR.
  • Trying to get the smart-licensing to work is a pain sometimes. Especially when we upgrade from 7.4.1 to 24.3.2 and they change how they implement licensing.

Return on Investment

  • Cisco is what we use. hard to say without having had other products in the same place as our Cisco Routers what would be good or bad.
