Cohesity Helios - A Great Value for our Enterprise!

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Cohesity [Helios] allowed us to backup data more effectively and restore the data fast. We have [fewer] issues in Hyper-v and Vmware compared to other products. Also, the addition of [Cohesity] Helios and [the] marketplace add new options that other products can not provide.

Pros

  • Extremely streamlined admin controls for our SAs
  • See backup
  • Solid data platform/encryption

Cons

  • I would like to see a broader analytics offering, including data management & security offerings.

Other Software Used

Veeam Backup & Replication, System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM), Arcserve Business Continuity Cloud

Return on Investment

  • Cohesity [Helios] restores data well.
  • [Cohesity Helios has] good reporting and metrics.

Alternatives Considered

Veeam Backup & Replication

Usability

A swiss army knife for your data

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Cohesity was brought into our organization as a replacement for traditional magnetic tape backups. We also were looking for a replacement for legacy NAS devices for the storage of unstructured data like home and user drives across the organization.

Pros

  • Backups - Cohesity makes it very easy to backup our VMware environment. They also have specialized backups for Active Directory, SQL, O365 Email, and legacy storage devices.
  • File services - Cohesity allows us to easily provision new SMB file shares.

Cons

  • Replication performance - We needed support to provide some customizations in order to get our replication to work properly to another offsite cluster. We have been told that this issue is fixed in the newest general release.
  • Support - I would characterize the support as very good, but in a few instances I could tell my support agent needed to go higher up his chain to get clarification on features. I believe Cohesity is rapidly growing their support infrastructure as they put more hardware in the field.

Other Software Used

HPE SimpliVity (formerly OmniCube), WhatsUp Gold, VMware ESXi

Return on Investment

  • We have not calculated an exact number but just our labor savings on a yearly basis is immense.
  • We also no longer have to pay for tape media, backup exec licensing, physical server, physical server license, etc.

After using Helios, I cant imagine administration without Helios

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Cohesity Helios in our environment to Manage all the individual clusters which we are supporting. We manage all of them from a single UI using Cohesity. No need to log in to all the clusters separately to administrate the day-to-day operations. Even for reporting features, it was very useful. If you are a super admin then you will have all the rights to do everything.

Pros

  • Single UI to manage the clusters centrally.
  • Super admin can do everything from the same UI
  • Good reporting feature which can provide detailed info

Cons

  • I don't see any improving required
  • few additional features can be implemented
  • Additional modes can be implemented to grab user attention

Other Software Used

Dell EMC Networker, IBM Spectrum Protect, Veeam Backup & Replication

Return on Investment

  • I see multiple tasks can be done from same UI which is a big positive
  • time taken to manage all the clusters has been reduced
  • UI can be improved better

Usability

Cohesity Helios for data analytics

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our main use case for Cohesity is NAS. We use Helios to assist with data analytics and [combine] the data that we have. We are able to search for specific file types or words and then we can use that to make further decisions. We look forward to [furthering] advances in security and will probably use that too.

Pros

  • Accessibility
  • On platform
  • Free

Cons

  • Bugs
  • Nas Focus instead of backups.
  • Out of box usability

Return on Investment

  • We are able to quickly make a share for users.
  • We can worry about security less then we had to before.
  • The management is far less complicated than our previous NAS.

Usability

Cohesity Helios Provides the Single Pane of Glass Admins Want

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Cohesity Helios allows for centralized administration and visibility of all of an organization's Cohesity clusters, both on-prem and cloud. It provides the "single pane of glass" that every technology company talks about but rarely fully delivers. Being able to see the status and alerts for every cluster, or even a single cluster, within the organization is a big plus. And if something is alerting, you can go into that cluster's management to gather more detail.

Pros

  • Centralized visibility
  • Centralized management

Cons

  • Reporting is limited

Return on Investment

  • Less time spent managing and monitoring backups
