We upload collection level records to the platform with a link back to our finding aid and inventory for inclusion in OCLC database.
Pros
Constant URLs
User interface is good
Run by OCLC, not likely to disappear
Cons
We use it for getting our collections to the public but also we use it simply as a bridge back to our own database, the rate we pay for the amount of minimum data is quite a bit. Since we do not use it as a digital preservation system I wish the there were lower rates for the type of use we need.
Likelihood to Recommend
Good if one does not have a lot of IT support such as our smaller university.
CONTENTdm is being used by the university library, especially by the Special Collections and University Archives department, to manage the library's digital collections.
Pros
Relatively easy to use for staff to manage collections, without complex workflows.
The end-user interface is friendly, a user can easily navigate around the image with zooming, panning, etc. There is a built-in video player, which is nice.
The product is relatively inexpensive.
It is easy to implement and maintain.
Cons
As a digital asset management system, one would expect the capability of managing preservation, which CONTENTdm lacks.
Lack of batch updating and other advanced metadata management capabilities.
The usage statistics does not work, and the company is not planning to fix it, at least based the interaction with tech support staff. Customers were referred to use Google Analytics.
Likelihood to Recommend
CONTENTdm is well-suited for smaller organizations as a simple solution to present a digital collection on the web. If your need is complex and requires digital preservation as part of the workflow, it may not be the best solution.
