My tryst with Db2

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a database, for enterprise wide applications across the globe which requires robustness, scalable and secure databases while allows multiple-faceted user community.

Large / medium organisations with humongous data sets to be managed is recommended a serious consideration of Db2. The peripheral enablers for handling large volume of data makes it better than times before. ( am avoiding specific product callouts, as it will depends on each one’s need / requirement along with willingness to spend) .

Have noticed a lot more of acceptance in BFSI , logistics and manufacturing conglomerates.

Decision is very similar to that of owning or leasing a private jet. Merely acquiring one won’t help your case but using the same optimally with a qualified crew makes the difference. Maintenance too will cost you in its own ways.

Have seen Oracle , old Sybase , Max DB, Mongo , and HANA DB in action. Other than HANA DB for SAP, will consider Db2 any day. MHave had opportunities to closely work with IBM labs to get support and enhancements. Experience was superlative. FYI-not been in Sync with labs since 2022.

During these cloud y days, an operationally sharp acumen can take the calls as is the confidence alluded on security.

Pros

  • Hosting ERP applications of SAP across 3 continents and round the clock
  • Banking solutions with few hundreds of millions as customers
  • Secure DB operations where security outweighs spender

Cons

  • HA DR activities to be simplified
  • Normal DB maintenance requires qualified professionals
  • License costs

Likelihood to Recommend

Well suited for where ever you want to handle

1) large data volumes

2) most cases structured, you may considering a streaming complementary solutions for high volume write ( inputs from sensor kind of devices )

3) security , back up , scalability as well as robustness

will not suggest for small and medium industries which does not have large data volumes or moderate ERP s where transactions are less than 100 a day…

unstructured data retrieval also has it’s own lag

Db2 maximizes our efficiency and it also provides great speed, stability and simplicity

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Db2 for all our back end processing and use it to handle a huge amount of transactions daily. It’s great for large data processing, especially for critical systems like point of sale and finance data security and also the ability to share data with each other makes everything work fast and efficiently.

Pros

  • from my experience I can tell that Db2 is quite reliable and stable even when put under heavy loads
  • it is very easy to use and the commands are also very easy to learn which makes administrating very simple
  • it can process data very quickly which saves us a lot of time and makes us more efficient

Cons

  • when the dark mode is on it can be frustrating to use since it's hard to tell what is going on
  • it lacks some of the connectivity options that Oracle provides by default and I think it is quite disappointing
  • it can be expensive for frequent data transfers from on-premise to the cloud

Likelihood to Recommend

I’d recommend Db2 to anyone needing a robust database for real-time transactions and it’s especially great for businesses handling a high volume of data, like retail and finance. The security is solid and IBM support is better than other vendors I’ve worked with.

IBM Db2 is very secure and scalable and it has very good performance in resource heavy applications

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have been a long time Db2 user starting with version 7.7 and working through to the latest version and I can definitely tell you that when it comes to dependability and scalability and resource intensive applications, Db2 is the best solution that you'll ever need. And with its smooth interface which uses cobol and mainframe systems, managing large volumes is very easy and effective.

Pros

  • almost near zero downtime
  • simple UI and can easily be used using sql syntax
  • compatible with both older and modern systems

Cons

  • should have a option where we can create our own shortcut keys for different jobs
  • currently only supports a few other language apart from english
  • can be complex for some users

Likelihood to Recommend

From my experience IBM Db2 is best suited for environments which needs outstanding performance, security compliance and scalability and I think that this is what makes it the best if not the perfect solution for every company. Also we found the strong cobol application support very helpful and a perfect fit for us.

DB2 in a School.

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As it is used in a School setting - DB2 is mainly used in Records Management and Data Integration as it is at the heart of the School Management Systems that are used. As it is used as a central repository for all records for all contacts (which in turn feeds into our Records Management system) - it simplifies the data collection process and allows easy interrogation of the data. It allows for automation and data transformations that can drive the business to use the data in a beneficial way for long-term planning and longitudinal tracking for students.

Pros

  • Query Processing.
  • Scalabity
  • 3rd Party Data Integration.
  • Automation

Cons

  • Certain linguistic choices of SL can be confusing, "=" is not "is".
  • Better and friendlier interface (although predominantly thats a 3rd party issue).
  • Granting access rights can be haphazard.

Likelihood to Recommend

I have primarily used it as the basis for a SIS - but I have migrated more than a few systems from there database systems to DB2 (Filemaker, mySQL, etc.). DB2 does have a better structural approach, as opposed to Filemaker, which allows for more data consistency, but this can also lead to an inflexibility that can sometimes be counterintuitive when attempting to compensate for the flexibility of the work environment as Schools tend to have an all in one approach.

Insights on IBM DB2.

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

So, I work for an investment bank, which has been our client for the last couple of years in the support role, and we use db2 extensively in our work. Some of the major highlights that I noticed with this tool are its reliability, ease of use, and the security it provides. We query a large set of data from the past several years for the business to make the decisions for the applications, and mostly, it just takes a minute or so to give us the data we require. This is very much suitable when used for a large set of data.

Pros

  • While we query a large set of data, the results are generally available within a minute or so.
  • Always reliable - I have never experienced an application going down.
  • It is easy to write queries and find tables and columns.
  • We can log in smoothly without any headaches.

Cons

  • Frontend can be much more engaging.
  • Takes time to understand the application.

Likelihood to Recommend

This is a perfect application when there is a large data set. Querying the data takes minimal time, which can save a reasonable amount of time, mainly when catering to a more extensive set of users. Having no downtime makes this a reliable and user-friendly application.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

DB2 is a solid relational database that stores information mainly from or used by the mainframe. High availability ensures stability and allows one to concentrate on business logic.

Pros

  • Robust database.
  • Easy to be maintained.
  • Security and data integrity.

Cons

  • Can be complex to exploit due to the richness of features.
  • Contract conditions can be improved.
  • Reinstall requires manual activities to ensure all the previous legacy is erased.

Likelihood to Recommend

DB2 suits best-structured companies dedicating full-time resources to administer the instances. It works very well, providing a unique level of robustness and integrity. In terms of cons, it's a proprietary solution that can require a relevant investment in terms of hardware. There could be lighter solutions to be looked at for small and medium businesses or use cases.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We handle large volumes of structured data, and Db2 is scalable and reliable for storing critical business data. We use in-memory processing and indexing to optimize the data query, managing customer accounts, transactions, risk assessments, claims processing, and customer policies. It integrates seamlessly with our applications, analytics platforms, and reporting tools. The fact that we can use JavaScript and SQL alongside Db2 makes it an amazing and powerful tool for any need we might have in the future.

Pros

  • Integration with JS
  • SQL queries
  • Optimization
  • Fast Data retrieval

Cons

  • Visual management
  • Add AI to construct queries based on the schema being used
  • More tutorials and simple access for students so they can explore the tool

Likelihood to Recommend

Just look at the big companies using it and you will see that it can be used on a simple bakery system and Crew Management for Aviation.

Of course smaller the business less it becomes viable. We need to understand the needs of the client. The best use I saw was in Big data access and management. The least efficient way to use is to small data sets.
