What is Dell RecoverPoint?

Dell RecoverPoint replication provides the continuous data protection to recover any application, on any supported storage array, in any location, to any point in time. Users can meet recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs) with instant access to data, and use RecoverPoint to support disaster recovery, operational recovery, and testing.

Dell EMC RecoverPoint review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Data replication tools ensure our company is consistent for users to access different data stores.Dell EMC RecoverPoint provides us reliable data protection.

Pros

  • Affordable pricing.
  • Integrations for automation.
  • Compression options.

Cons

  • It's hard to gauge how many disks would need to uses based on the RTO and RPO for the replication sets.
  • Dell EMC Recoverpoint requires implementation that can only be done by EMC support.
  • Dell EMC RecoverPoint isn't simple to install and or set up without having bandwidth from our tech team.

Most Important Features

  • (RPO) Compression options.
  • Dell EMC RecoverPoint replication provides the constant data protection you need to recover any application.
  • Integrations for automation for vmware.

Return on Investment

  • Dell EMC RecoverPoint requires certain things to be implemented that can only be done by EMC / Dell support.

Dell EMC RecoverPoint review Nov 2022

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I used the product to backup virtual machines. This had been a challenging area due to the resources that were required and also it had to be easy to maintain. It was also a very manual process for a long time, so backups had to be automated and also sychronised.

Pros

  • Continuous data protection
  • Consistent recovery
  • Automated discovery

Cons

  • User interface
  • Pricing
  • Local support

Most Important Features

  • Backup that is set and forget
  • Supportability for issues
  • Able to recover data in a timely manner

Return on Investment

  • Sometimes the recover was hit and miss
  • Licensing cost was a big issue
  • It was relatively easy to configure

Storage agnostic and highly reliable solution

Pros

  • Automatically discover and register VMware ESXi hosts for replication.
  • Auto-registers shared datastores , pre-defined failover Network Configuration. EMC RecoverPoint saved a lot of time and helped our team to minimize our disaster recovery window.

Cons

  • Until now I don't have any but in this technological era there are bugs in every software but are fixed in next patches or new releases.

Return on Investment

  • We perform DR test in every six months and recoverpoint (vRPA) simplified our DR strategy. The solution saved lot of time and helped our team to minimize the DR window. It provides a reliable and repeatable automated DR workflow that increases data protection and recovery operational efficiencies. Silent test recovery and replicate VMs without impacting production site and bring down our RPO/RTOs to meet business needs is one of the key benefit.

Usability

EMC Recoverpoint - Physical

Pros

  • EMC recoverpoint does it's core functions of DVR like replication extremely well. It integrates perfectly with VMware vsphere and SRM and is relatively simple to configure.
  • EMC recoverpoint handles failover and failback very well, either manually or through the SRM interface.
  • EMC recoverpoint physical is relatively easy to run once installed and configured!!

Cons

  • The Journal space that recoverpoint needs may need to be adjusted and so a lot of space is needed at both sites, production or DR, to accommodate for longer periods of DVR like recording. Failover testing may run out of capacity for long periods of time.
  • Recoverpoint requires clustering of nodes that can only be done by EMC support.
  • Recoverpoint requires that splitter devices exist for all protected arrays. VNX, VMAX, and XIO all have various degrees of integration of the splitter hardware and lose features, with VNX being the strongest in featureset.

Return on Investment

  • Recoverpoint allowed the Business to have DR capabilities across a multitude of EMC arrays. It allowed the centralization of VM's to be protected across environments both locally as well as remotely.
  • Recoverpoint can bring RTO down to minutes and can keep RPOs down to quickly restorable levels as well.

Recover Point

Pros

  • Block based replication for sql is better than taking just the snaps of the servers since it won't be able to clear the memory of a sql server.
  • With the compression option lower recovery point objective (RPO) and recovery time objective (RTO) is possible versus using other vendor software/hardware.
  • Integrations for automation for vmware.

Cons

  • EMC RecoverPoint isn't easier to install and or set up. You will need to know how to zone, understand SAN and networking.
  • It's hard to understand how many disks to use based on the RTO and RPO for the replication set.
  • Will still need professional service and training to really understand how to use the software.

Return on Investment

  • Using EMC RecoverPoint we have 4 hours of roll back just in case a snap is corrupt or have avamar backup issues.
  • Integration with vmware SRM is a big plus for automation of a data recovery plan.

Data Domain, EMC VNX
