Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We found that because we are looking at moving to next and there seems to be a move away from F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management the product has a limited lifetime and I feel is not worth putting the time into at this time.

Pros

  • It show us all F5s in one spot
  • It is able to take backups
  • It can help with upgrades
  • Give central spot to make reports

Cons

  • There a lack of the going forward to next
  • The second site product does not do what we need and we are forced to write our own scripts
  • Many of the alerting that was in enterprise management is no longer in F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management

Return on Investment

F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management provides a common interface to push quick changes across the F5 gear to mitigate several critical vulnerabilities that gets notified in the F5 quarterly advisory. It also helps to automate OS and patch management saving man hours for our team.

Pros

  • Common system level changes like cipher suite customization, ssh protocol settings etc can be pushed to all F5 gear through one click of a button
  • Enterprise standard templates for profiles/protocols etc., can be efficiently managed across F5 gear through a single interface

Cons

  • To be able to schedule software updates at a later time/date to meet change management window so manual intervention is minimized. F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management should be able to send alert if upgrade process halts or fails for any reason.

Return on Investment

  • Cut costs by requiring less manual hours to manage F5 OS installations
  • Great monitoring and alerting tool for general F5 gear health
  • Provides critical information for capacity planning of the F5 resources

F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management is nice, but not critical

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We put F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management in our environment to use its centralized management capabilities, but we don't make much use of it. It is part of our certificate renewal and deployment process, but doesn't add much to our Big-IP administration. Maybe we're using it wrong.

Pros

  • Deployment and change tracking

Cons

  • For small, quick changes it just seems to add more steps and time to the process

Return on Investment

  • I have used its API to automate certificate deployment to the Big-IPs

F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management - It Could Have Been Great

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We backup VELOS, and BIG-IPs, and have LTM objects in silos. We use it to run a second site.

Pros

  • Nothing
  • Very Little
  • Even less

Cons

  • Everywhere
  • F5OS compatibility
  • BIG-IP Next Support

Return on Investment

  • Meet Compliance requirements for backups

F5 BIG-IQ Centralized Management feedback - not my favorite

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In my opinion, it has been pretty undependable and is the most difficult product to keep up to date. In my experience, upgrades are a giant pain and never go well. I believe central manager is going to be the product to replace this, but I want to be sure it is nothing like this this product. "Big IQ 3.0" if you will.

Pros

  • It does work for licensing well, though tons of custom SKUs
  • It does work for backups

Cons

  • Everything else about it is no bueno

Return on Investment

  • It has caused issues with BIG-IP's trying to get stats, so we turned this off
