Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I've been using Harpoon for my business since 2018. There have been moments when I tried other, competing platforms, but I still ended up coming back to Harpoon in the end. It helps with several things at once - bookkeeping, invoicing, project management and profit goal setting.

Pros

  • Helps define profit goals and with metrics, shows if you are on track to reach them
  • Invoicing is easy and easy to track with projects and clients
  • For tax seasons, it easy to pull reports (e.g. expenses, P&Ls, etc.)

Cons

  • Sometimes expense reporting bring up duplicate transactions, which may be more of a fault of the API that connects my account, which is Plaid
  • Would be nice if in the future, they can offer ACH as one of the payment options for invoices
  • There are some redundancies that pop up when setting time frames for client work and the projects attached to them. If they aren't aligned, it can cause inaccurate reporting. If it just sent it once and it took care of both functions, it would be easier

Likelihood to Recommend

I think Harpoon works best for freelancers, consultants, self employed people and smaller companies with less client to bill. For larger enterprises with hundreds or thousands of clients, there are larger, more intricate platforms in the market that are better suited for those needs.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As a freelancer, Harpoon is my primary tool for managing invoices, collecting payments, and actualizing my goal progress. With the dashboard and scheduling features, I know how much I've earned, and how that earning will play out over the course of the year.

With my tracked goals, I can easily and quickly compare actuals with the goals and discover if I'm on track or ahead of the game.

With invoicing, they're easy to create and quickly integrates with Stripe for direct deposit into my bank accounts. On late invoices, Harpoon automatically emails my clients and prods them for payment. Very rarely do I need to do anything further to collect payments.

Harpoon also offers reports, expense tracking, and time tracking. As a freelancer or small agency, Harpoon is designed to work with its users in a helpful way. How Harpoon structures the interface and system is just as important than what it does.

Pros

  • Makes Sending Invoices & Collecting Payment Easy, for Freelancers
  • Tracking Financial Goals (Monthly & Annual) & Projecting Future Results
  • Provides Insights On AR, Earned Income, Top Clients, and other helpful but highly relevant data points.

Cons

  • The automatic expense management is basic. It does sync with banks, but I've had some duplicate entry issues that are being worked out of the system.
  • I'd like to see additional reports that dive deeper into some of the dashboard widgets.
