Managing APIs Made Simple with IBM API Connect

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use IBM API Connect for full lifecycle API management—from design to deployment and deprecation. We expose a large number of APIs to multiple vendors and manage them all easily through the portal and it also helps in monitoring access and automating the configuration process of new APIs.

Pros

  • i love the security features and features like rate limiting and throttling
  • the best thing I like is that it's very easy to configure and manage access for specific products at individual and group levels
  • the UI of the developer and admin portal is good for managing and viewing the available products

Cons

  • with this layer of APIC configuration, it adds a bit more delay
  • the platform is very slow if I import the API and try to view or edit it in the API editor
  • customer support is not very efficient

Likelihood to Recommend

I recommend it if you're managing a lot of APIs and want a clean interface that makes your life easier and it's really handy when working with containers or deploying on Red Hat OpenShift, also I found it quick to deploy on our on-prem VM appliance, which was a plus.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to manage all available API in our org. By using API connect we are able to introduce an API as a product resulting in ease of use for consumer. Also it solve our problem of pricing model of "pay as you use" and "pay for what you subscribe". It gives a platform to showcase all available products or a set of API's as product for consumer which helps in determining the business on the sales side. The biggest problem that IBM API Connect resolves for our org is that we have huge number of API's due to which it is very hard to manage all of them at a time, but APIC portal solve this problem by providing a very easy integration to a UI portal. Both Developer and Product portal UI is very simple and easy to navigate for user.

Pros

  • We have a project for of a notification system which has a bunch of API's in it. Using API connect we have introduced a product as whole with all this API for consumers to use with different pricing plans.
  • Another use case is for a single API which is integrated with multiple backend routing system which we have added to our product marketplace in API connect. This is available with some rate limit and different pricing plans for consumer to use.
  • We have a project with multiple API's where we have create a product with all the API's in it. In this case, Consumer can subscribe to each individual API withing this group or it can subscribe to whole product as one depending on their need. This scenario also has different pricing plans.

Cons

  • Onboarding a new org or consumer is a bit of hard using IBM API Connect. It can be improved in the UI.
  • The portal has some bugs while configuring different gateways in design tab when we create a new product which can be fixed.

Likelihood to Recommend

1)If the Org has very large number of API's then IBM API Connect is best platform to use for managing those API's.

2) If you want to use features like access control and market place for your product than IBM API Connect is useful.

3) If you need to introduce some pricing models for consumers related to your product than IBM API Connect can be used.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

This platform enhances survey functionality and data integrations across the different platforms we use to understand customer sentiment. It securely connects our platforms with other platforms or databases within the organization, gathers and integrates customer feedback, and automates survey data.

Pros

  • Solid CRM Integration.
  • Great automated workflows.
  • Reduced operational costs.

Cons

  • I think it struggles a bit with dynamic data.
  • Challenges with data validations.
  • It's not real-time, but it's close.

Likelihood to Recommend

If you're looking to improve developer productivity and get real-time monitoring, it's a good fit. It can be used alongside other IBM apps and products if you're looking for a relatively well-priced app to support these actions. Security is excellent, too, but there is a bit of a learning curve; one needs to be well-experienced to get good usage.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use this to connect multiple internal systems into a single source of truth database. The product requires many disparate systems and processes that need to operate independently of one another. At times, however, we need to consolidate and reconcile data within a single system. For this, we can use IBM API to bring this together.

Pros

  • API discovery feature is very helpful to allow us to scope the work required before diving into things.
  • The ability to set permissions and rulesets at a user level is essential to restrict access to specific datasets.
  • Ability for external users (those from outside our organisation) to leverage the API in more restrictive manner.

Cons

  • The analytics server needs improving. it seems to require additional resources to be as effective.
  • Pricing model has become expensive for some features leading us to scale back our use of the product.

Likelihood to Recommend

The latest version allows advanced API discovery features before entering the life cycle, ensuring better management & planning. Integrated Governance offers robust API & Product level rulesets for efficient governance, making compliance & control easier. IBM Data power integration Acts as a secure gateway proxy enhancing security & scalability for API traffic.

Easy API management.

Rating: 6 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

The tool is effective for the creation, assembly, management, protection, and sharing of the programming interfaces of web applications. It can cover all the phases of the API lifecycle and be accessed by different users, allowing good management of all the processes. Usually, these processes are not managed through a single platform; therefore, tracking the status and collaboration could be complicated.

Pros

  • It covers all the phases of the API's life, from generation to publishing.
  • It allows multiple users to access and have a single source of truth about the status, open points, and owners.
  • It can support multiple APIs simultaneously, allowing different teams to work independently.

Cons

  • Improvement can come in the interface of the tool, which is sometimes complex and requires a deep understanding of the tool.
  • Improving the different levels of access to the playroom could be helpful because product owners and developers need to see other information.
  • Publishing API and integration of API can be more straightforward.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is well suited for the development of API from scratch, using the tool from day one, since its conception, tracking the development, the tests in the different environments and the releases, and keeping all information in just one platform. It is not appropriate for gathering requirements and defining objectives.

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Existing challenge in the Organization creating, replacing & managing the APIs for SDK. These APIs should be expose to end-consumer for integration. Though swagger and other tools were helpful but managing the API per client and replacing them when required was tedious job.

Here IBM API Connect helped very positively. End results are, segragetion of APIs based on client categories, managing individual clients APIs & replacement based on specific need not effecting other client category.

Pros

  • Authentication is very easy either from the Source System or the Target System. No much complexity to setup. Easy to manage and implement
  • Rate Limiter to defy wrong usage in case as part of security. Again it's configuration to apply.
  • Reading the target system certificate for identification. Another level of security.

Cons

  • I would say doing things differently not actual improvement. Classification of security layers will helps to identify the what configuration will under given security group. Easy to understand and access for a new user.

Likelihood to Recommend
