What is DataGrip?

DataGrip, from JetBrains, is a database IDE that is tailored to suit the specific needs of professional SQL developers.

DataGrip is perfect for developers

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use DataGrip daily for simple queries and complex reporting. I use it map out new tables/columns and to create new indexes.

Pros

  • Browse tables and the data
  • Export data
  • Create, modify tables

Cons

  • An easier way to have a pool saved queries that can opened quickly

Return on Investment

  • Less time to develop database structures
  • Easy to filter and find data
  • Export data for reporting purposes

Usability

Alternatives Considered

Navicat and MySQL Workbench

Other Software Used

PhpStorm, Freshdesk, CodeIgniter, Zoom Phone

A good and complete tool for db developers that comes with a price in terms of money and complexity.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use DataGrip as our main database client to connect to many different services and db engines. It has a good selection of connectors and for each of them enough granularity to configure the connection properties properly including ssh tunnelling and ssl certificates.

Pros

  • Connects to most of the db engines known
  • auto complete is powerful and db objects introspection is complete
  • one place for all your db connections

Cons

  • The resources footprint on your system is big
  • it is not just a db client, it is a db IDE and form most things, for most people, it is too much and overwhelming. Too many options have transformed a db client into another very complicated tool
  • Connections are grouped by project so just having a quick check to a database could require some change in the approach to the tool otherwise you end up with a single dummy project and tens of connections
  • introspection to browse db objects is slow and painful
  • It tries to be smart to help but it ends up to be in the way some time
  • Java based with all the pros (not many) and cons (bye bye memory)

Return on Investment

  • centralise handling and re-allocation of license helps organisations to avoid wasting money on unused licenses.
  • One tool for multiple db engine could end up in less time and money spent on multiple cheaper tools
  • App well supported with continuos improvements and bug fixing

DataGrip is a great tool to work across platforms

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Great tool for managing databases across platforms. Single UI for everything, and supports most DBMS out there. The UI can be customized in many ways.

Pros

  • Support for many DBMS platforms
  • Intuitive UI
  • Customizable UI

Cons

  • Can be a memory hog
  • No free community version with limited functionality

Return on Investment

  • Cost savings because we could use fewer database tools
  • Unfortunately, DataGrip isn't a 100% replacement for SSMS for SQL Server

Alternatives Considered

SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS), Notepad++, MySQL Workbench and Toad Database Developer Tools
