Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Initially, we were doing manual deployments of DB and version controls of commits and changes were not maintained. By using Liquidbase we were successfully able to schema migration and were able to have version controls as well. We did Liquidbase java based migration using spring boot and Liquidbase library.

Pros

monitor changes independently instead of using version by which we were able to give support to multiple developers and code branches
It also help in documented history
it also provide rollback facility
it also has ability to work with stored logic
we can have facility to apply logic based on condition

Cons

sometimes changelog lock may not be release occasionally
there should be facility to have a timeout in Liquidbase changeset
sometime performance issues are also observed when recalculating checksum

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Liquibase tool helped us in automating Database changes and standardized the way we deploy our DDL/DML scripts to the Database. Business problems: 1. Drift 2. Audit table or tracking table 3. Controls to changes 4. Integrated rollback Liquibase is addressing the above said problem with Drift detection, changelog tables, policy checks and usage of rollback tag.

Cons

Snapshot file: Only Liquibase can understand the content of the Json file. It would be beneficial if it can contain data along with the Meta data information
Would be great if Liquibase can come with a report showing the replica of database
it will help app team if they can export all objects on a database as a code and save it in a folder in Repo
For NoSQL DB - Drift and pre-validate is not working
DATABASECHANGELOGHISTORY table is not working for NoSQL DB
Generate changelog XML file: Only procedural objects are organized. It would be good, if it can organize all the DB objects

insight into state of database and consistency in deploying changes, peer review on db schema changes since its in source code now, and auditable in terms of knowing who approved what changes and knowing that they were tested in uat

Liquibase is being used in InternationalSOS for database deployment (PostgreSQL, Redshift). We are extremely pleased with Liquibase; however, its support can be improved. We would like to extend the Liquibase tool to support other databases, such as No SQL and Elastic Search.

Liquibase is used in our organization to revise and release database schema changes safer and faster from development stage to production stage. Liquibase automates the database CI/CD pipelines to improve speed, reliability and remove manual code reviews. Liquibase improved developer experience and collaboration within the organization. It is easy to manage and deploy database changes.

Cons

The setup and rollback process can be made easy, as of now it is a bit complex and difficult.
Liquibase can improve in performance optimization to reduce execution time.
Liquibase can improve their error logging for version mismatches.

Liquibase is well suited when there is a need to manage database version. When there are database changes then Liquibase can easily manage, deploy the updates and it can build an automated CI/CD pipelines for databases. Liquibase is less appropriate where there is no change in database schema but that is less likely to happen.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We needed a technical solution that would simplify and streamlined how we managed changes for different types of databases (both SQL and NoSQL), as data flows from and to various sources. In particular it was important that the solution would allow an easier way to rollback in case of problems and that it would put us on track to develop compliance with NoSQL databases

Cons

Customer support could be quicker
The user experience in using it has not always been consistent due to the CLI

Likelihood to Recommend

I would recommend Liquibase as a change management tool as it gave my data engineering team great flexibility in terms of which databases we could make it work with, plus giving us the confidence to try out changes in a dev environment that would mimic the production environment; even in the case of a problem in production, it was clear of to rollback (even though we didn’t need to). I would recommend using Liquibase in a company/team with the required skill set (software engineering, data engineering) already well established, otherwise there is a (small) learning curve required which might be problematic for some users.
