What is Microsoft Hands-on Labs?

Microsoft Hands-on Labs is a suite of elearning content which also features a virtual learning or training lab for cloud apps and services, instructor led training, and Microsoft Learn coding workshop.

Categories & Use Cases

Great for hands-on training, although the interface has a few quirks

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I have used Microsoft Hands-on Labs for both Sharepoint and Power Platform instructor-led training. The labs allow me to work in real-time in a Microsoft environment alongside an instructor to get real-time feedback. There are also usually scenarios and instructions alongside the lab to tell me what to do and where to go.

Pros

  • Actual Microsoft environment to play around with
  • Instructions alongside
  • Ability to save a session so you don't lose work

Cons

  • Copying and pasting can be clunky
  • Sometimes the instructions are not accurate
  • For some Microsoft tools, it requires you to create a temporary account, which takes some time and is time-consuming
  • Have to remember to save or you will lose your environment
  • May not be the most user-friendly to initially start

Most Important Features

  • Real-time feedback with a Microsoft product
  • Instructions on the side so you know where you are
  • Ability to copy and paste the text into the application (it's a little clunky but it works)

Return on Investment

  • Has made training more efficient and is better for learner retention

Thoughts on Microsoft Hands-on Labs

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used it internally for training and education purposes.

There were monthly training sessions, content for certificate preparation, and best sales and leadership practices.

Pros

  • The platform was simple
  • It did what it needed to do

Cons

  • In my opinion, there was nothing impressive or exciting about it
  • I found the interaction to be low and boring
  • It was no different than any other education platform

Most Important Features

  • Knowledge sharing
  • Training
  • Raising awareness

Return on Investment

  • I think it has a positive impact in having a platform to train employees
  • I don't think the cost might be worth it given that the content is super dry
