Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We are utilizing this product for the development of real-time updating data market and dashboards for the provisioning and monitoring of marketing analytics. Moreover, by the means of the Microsoft Power Bi tool we integrating dozens of data sources into single data market, which includes Oracle Database System, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, MariaDB, data stream from RabbitMQ, and integration with ELK stack.

Pros

  • Real-time dashboards representing data and marketing analytics
  • Integration of several types of data sources such as Oracle SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB and so on
  • Unified data market composed of different dashboards from different data sources that are being updated automatically in the real-time manner

Cons

  • Proper integration with ELK stack - we have encountered that there is no direct way of integration, therefore we have done it through a "bypass" way which is not convenient
  • Very crowded user interface - the entry-level bar is high for average digital users. Also, it is blocking the view of the dashboards.

Effective tool for data visualisations

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

There are two main ways in which we use Microsoft Power BI Embedded in The University of Sydney (in the context of academic / teaching staff in the School of Architecture, Design, and Planning). Firstly, Power BI is used to provide information about the students that are enrolled in different study units. This includes such information as country of origin, age, chosen degree, first language, grades, etc. This information is visualised as bar, radial, or line charts, which are very intuitive to use and understand. It is also easy to sort and search for required information. This is really helpful for me as a course coordinator because it allows me to know my students better and adjust my courses delivery accordingly. Secondly, Power BI is used to communicate information about our teaching loads. Again it is a pretty intuitive tool with an easy-to-use interface, which is able to communicate complex data in a very engaging way.

Pros

  • visualizes complex data (from excel tables)
  • engaging look
  • easy embedding to web

Cons

  • it mostly only allows one way interactions
  • user interface can be improved
  • limits on including data

Most Important Features

  • regular updates
  • integration with excel
  • cost effective tool
  • customisable and engaging visualisations

Return on Investment

  • saving time, because users can understand information better
  • better communication of information compared to simple data tables
