I have installed Oracle 11,12 on Oracle Linux for banking core software DB and the only problem was getting updates from the source because of restrictions.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Oracle Linux for containerization and hosting services. At our clients, we use it for applications hosting with Nginx, Apache, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. At the moment it is one of the most stable Linux distros out there and it helps to solve a lot of problems regarding unstable packages. One of the most important factors is that it is free for everything you want.

I recommend it to everyone that wants to try it. For me, it is best suited for hosting websites, containers, databases, etc. I use it for everything from hosting to automation.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

For some clients, Oracle Linux is used mostly to run Oracle database as single (whether using ASM - HAS or filesystems) instances and in some cases, it runs Oracle RAC or even to run simply Oracle client to attend to applications or observer for configurations with Oracle Data Guard. It´s also very easy to get support for Oracle Linux.

  • Good performance for Oracle databases.
  • Easy to deploy Oracle databases.

Cons

  • It could be installed with Oracle ASMLIB already in it.
  • Contain a tool to prepare server to have oracle database installed.

Likelihood to Recommend

Mostly to run on the Oracle RAC database. It's very well suited and makes the installation very easy. Also, the performance seems to be superior to other Linux versions. I have not tried to install Oracle Linux in order to run other services, so I can not tell if it's good or not for others than Oracle databases.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

In my organization, we already use Oracle Linux, as experiments, for projects with Zabbix, Grafana, Syslog server, IPAM, and Elastic Stack. The goal was a closer approach to Oracle Linux and to use it as an alternative to replacing CentOs. The documentation is very well prepared and we had no difficulties in making these POCs.

  • The limited knowledge base on the Oracle website sometimes could make it difficult for tshoot.
  • The user's interface could be improved to attract more user's engagement.
  • The Oracle Linux, needs to offer support to more packages.

Likelihood to Recommend

As I mentioned in another question I believe the scenarios that Oracle Linux is well suited are using as a distribution to install apps such as Zabbix, Grafana, Syslog Servers, Elastic Stack, IPAM, and other's administrative tools for sysadmins. The scenarios where Oracle is less appropriate could be associated with user GUI, for example. I believe the user's GUI could be improved.

In my current organization, I am the lead consultant for a Healthcare Client in the UK. So, we had to design, create and implement a top-class robust solution for the Infrastructure implementation. We chose Oracle Linux as an operating system as it is the best out there. Most of our java based applications which are very critical in Hospital management like Prescription generation, audit, Salary management, Staff management, and a lot more are built on top of Oracle Linux as it provides capabilities of RHEL along with the usability of Oracle databases. The blazing fast speed of oracle Linux handles our server load fluently and helps us run a smooth operation -24*7.

Pros

  • Oracle Linux helps run native databases on the same operating systems that they were developed on.
  • Docker and Kubernetes support.
  • Oracle Linux is so powerful that you can patch the vulnerabilities faster than 74% of the organizations.
  • The support provided by oracle guys is one of the best.
  • All the traditional Linux commands are supported.

Cons

  • The limited knowledge base on the Oracle website sometimes makes it difficult for troubleshooting.
  • Some bugs are observed while working with the GUI . That needs to be fixed urgently.
  • There is a scope of improvement in kernel-level configuration.
  • The license cost is little on the higher side.

Likelihood to Recommend

As the Healthcare domain is very customer-centric and demanding, the application should be always available with almost zero downtime to cater to the needs of our huge customer base. This was highly achieved when we brought Oracle Linux into our infrastructure base. The speed, agility, and support made our customers satisfied and we got a satisfaction index score (SIS) of 9/10 from the customer and peers.

As a budding startup in the 5g sector, we are looking to innovate, scale, and automate. The flexibility, agility, and robustness of Oracle Linux make it a brilliant fit for handling infrastructure loads during deployments in Dev/Test servers along with customer load in production servers as well. Definitely recommended.

Pros

  • Cloud applications/docker and kubernetes support is one of the best.
  • Highly reliable and excellent performance.
  • The similarity with the linux commands and Hierarchy makes it fairly easy to use.

Cons

  • The user interface is good but needs to improve for user engagement.
  • Now need to develop as a cross-functional product with compatibility with other OS like Windows and Mac. This is currently missing from the product.
  • License cost is little on a higher side.

Likelihood to Recommend

Oracle Linux is a very good and useful combination of the stability of Rhel and support for Oracle Databases. Our organisation uses an application and a database combo that we offer to the client but after the inclusion of Oracle Linux into our infrastructure, the provision and the operation cost are reduced significantly. So I would recommend using Oracle Linux when you are using multiple on-premises DB servers and want to move to a more secure, organised, and fast operating system.

Used to host our Applications and Webservers. The enterprise support is very good even during odd or out-of-office hours. We have hosted multiple applications on these servers including Database servers.

We purchased 12 Exadata appliances and used two more intermediate servers to support data administration and backup activities. Altogether there are 14 servers that use Oracle Linux in a critical environment and in relation to the database. The stability of Oracle and the ease of the commands commonly used in Linux provide an excellent opportunity to combine the best of both worlds.

  • Zabbix is not recommended for install on Exadata Servers

Likelihood to Recommend

I only work with Oracle databases, so I believe that my experience will be limited to the universe in which Oracle Linux can be used, initially with its primary use being in databases, I can strongly recommend it for this use without restrictions, except when used in Exatada where the installation of the Zabbix agent is not recommended, compromising the monitoring of the environment.

Replace Solaris Unix with Oracle Linux

The main use case for using Oracle Linux was to save millions of dollars migrating from Solaris UNIX. The use of Oracle Linux Cloud provides scalability and a more accurate allocation of resources. Oracle Linux also provides high performance and secure operating environment. Most importantly, Oracle Linux is supported across both hybrid and multi-cloud environments.

Pros

  • Oracle Linux installation and setup is quick and easy with minimal downtime.
  • Oracle Linux provides integrated suite of Linux optimized tools.
  • Oracle Linux patching is automated and does not require rebooting.
  • The learning curve for using Oracle Linux is much less than expected and zero time if you already know UNIX.

Cons

  • Oracle Linux does not fully support the open source community.
  • The Oracle Linux documentation for support is lacking and often non-existent.
  • Oracle Linux needs to support more packages.

Likelihood to Recommend

Oracle Linux is recommended for low-cost applications that do not require much technical support. Oracle Linux is ideal for standalone servers in a highly distributed environment with scalability, high performance, and secure needs. Oracle Linux should be used if you wish for easy setup and solid core software requirements. Oracle Linux is definitely recommended if Oracle Database is already used and other Oracle products allow further optimization features.
