Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use PitchBook to assess comparable transaction in VC deals, we use it to check the fundraising status of several startups, we use it to evaluate performances of other co-investors and we use it to map new startups coming from relevant accelerator program. Sometime we use it to check the founders of other startups

Pros

  • Data coverage

Cons

  • Quality of the data
  • Startup classification

Likelihood to Recommend

We believe it's a valuable tool for scout new startups, it's useful especially when you want to look for new startups in geographical locations where you don't have a big personal network. It's also useful when you want to see the performance of other VC funds and compare it to others

Excellent research product

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use PitchBook for independent research and market analysis into multiple market segments, looking for industry trends in M&A, sector-specific information, and more. As a marketer, the platform provides me a constant stream of statistics, charts and valuable data that can be used to direct campaigns as well as to add emphasis to thought leadership and create robust content for my firm and team.

Pros

  • Industry research
  • Fresh data
  • Market analysis
  • Market maps

Cons

  • Niche/LMM focused research
  • Research alerts
  • AI powered chat tool for finding resources in natural language

Likelihood to Recommend

The research products are excellent, and regularly updated. It's very useful for driving thought leadership; I can always count on a fresh report being available either related to M&A broadly or a specific sector from which I can create new materials for marketing campaigns and for my team. I use it less for LMM lead sourcing, preferring other tools there.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our investment bank,[...] operates in the middle market, and we do sell side representation for technical and non-technical companies. I am one of the deal makers at [...].
PitchBook is essential equipment for me to do my job every day. PitchBook is the industry's best source of buyer and seller information.
At PitchBook they have a team that tirelessly curates and updates the information in the PitchBook database. I would heartily recommend PitchBook to investment Bankers and Private equity and strategic buyers.

Pros

  • Detailed profiles of companies
  • Details of transactions companies have done
  • Reports generated by specialist focus groups within PitchBook.

Cons

  • Searching is not as good as it could be. Hypothetically, as a sell-side investment bank, it isn't easy to identify all the private equity firms with an investment thesis centered on Home Services, for example. How do I identify all the private equity firms (PEs) interested in investing in B2B SaaS Companies in the HealthTech sector? How do I find PEs interested in investing in IT Services companies? How can I identify private equity firms that primarily focus on investing in AI companies?
  • PitchBook does not have any AI or Generative components that I am aware of.
  • I think there could be Video overviews of Buyers and sellers that could be submitted by either of those groups. These videos could be two-minute overviews of the companies or buyers.
  • PitchBook has no feedback buttons in the application? If I am using the application everyday why not provide me with a method of directly providing feedback to PitchBook?
  • Generally, there is a lack of video content on the PitchBook platform. Many of the reports can be converted into videos using third-party products like Synthesia. There is a reason YouTube and TikTok are so popular. PitchBook has a wealth of content that can be converted into video.
  • Pricing of the subscription is still prohibitively high. The total addressable market is large if there were a lower price point for the PitchBook Subscription Service

Likelihood to Recommend

Great for research of Companies to sell. Also great to research potential buyers. In PitchBook it is not easy to match sellers to buyers.

Industry gold standard but, in my opinion, pricey and lacks info on smaller companies

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to track companies related to or similar to those in our portfolio. We also use it to track the activity of co-investors. We also look up some of our 'star' portfolio companies to make sure they are being tracked accurately.

Pros

  • Captures very wide range of startups
  • VC exit predector
  • Company summary
  • Investors in a company

Cons

  • total amount invested is weak
  • early stage company tracking lags
  • some company descriptions arent clear

Likelihood to Recommend

It is well suited to looking up companies that are active in a space and then finding similar companies to the target company.
I think early stage companies is where PitchBook struggles most. Descriptions and round/ investment info can be inaccurate

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to analyse VC and PE trends, primarily looking at investments into the UK, where they come from, and in what sector they are materialising. This is one of the few databases we have access to on VC and PE, so it fills an evidence gap on those types of investment and complements more FDI-related analysis.

Pros

  • Enables filleting of information.
  • Provides a strong universe of data to analyse.
  • Provides research and trends reports from Pitchbook specialists.

Cons

  • More ability to look at where investments have originated from.
  • Sometimes the site could be more navigable.
  • As an analyst, I would like to see more data about the businesses/projects being invested in and the investing company.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is very well suited to analyzing PE and VC and fills a valuable gap in our knowledge in this space. However, it does not capture FDI-related investment, although I do not think it needs to for our purposes. I think more about predictive analytics, e.g., predicting investment is something that could be augmented.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Pitchbook to identify companies that would be potential investment targets or to do research about a particular market or space. In particular we are looking to invest in attractive companies and Pitchbook is the best way to find accurate information about new companies, the team, the space they are operating in, syndicate of investors and what stage they are in. I also enjoy Pitchbook research capabilities for fundraising or digging in to particular areas.

Pros

  • More accurate information about companies than crunchbase
  • news feed is very nice to surface new companies
  • Information about rounds and dates

Cons

  • more accurate information about valuation
  • If you can get PPS that would be amazing for further analysis
  • Send me alerts
  • I have had to change my profile quite frequently as it is in accurate so I imagine that is the case for others

Likelihood to Recommend

Sourcing of companies. Augmenting information about existing companies. MArket research, example AI for cyber security. Using the data for internal data purposes. Researching a particular market segment (example insuretech). You have had pieces on LP environment in the past that I have found to be very interesting as well. THank you

Good tools for VC and startups

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Helps me to know more about startups, competition and fund raising. It also helps me to know bit more about the industry landscape where startup operates. Prepares me very well for new exploratory calls which I shave with startups and helps in having deeper conversations with the founders of the team.

Pros

  • Scouting
  • competition
  • industry overview

Cons

  • Up to date info on startups
  • More relevant competitors
  • Deeper industry overview

Likelihood to Recommend

It is very helpful not only for VC and CVS, but also for many startups or statements or entrepreneurs looking to start their own ventures, and give them good overview of market where they want to play and excel. Also gives me good deal flow to work with daily basis.

Great for investment and deal tracking

Rating: 10 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use PitchBook in our Innovation team for scouting new companies and startups, new cleantech solutions, monitor partners and startups of interest, and get informed overall with the reports. I frequently use the Search & Lists tool, set up alerts for companies and industries of interest, and monitor specific market spaces in strategic geographies.

Pros

  • Large companies and investors database
  • Detailed information about companies, including contacts
  • Deal tracking

Cons

  • I miss TRUE AI features (not just LLM for searches - that doesn't even work well yet)
  • Sometimes I come across niche companies in the database that are out of business
  • I wish I could filter a list of companies by HQ region and not city (in lists where "modify search" is not an option, like Market Maps)

Likelihood to Recommend

PitchBook is a really good tool if you are an investor looking for opportunities or an analyst that needs market data for decision making. Probably not the best tool in the market if you're looking for promising startups in stealth more, but if your strategy includes investments in companies with more traction, you can easily and reliably use PitchBook for that search. Moderately good to find new solutions for business operations. Very useful if you need names and emails.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use PitchBook to gather information on start-ups and funding rounds, as well as finding data on listed companies. We also screen all funding rounds that might be of relevance to our fund or that were done by competitor. It also gives us a good overview of recent fundraising and funding trends

Pros

  • Give overview over fundraising landscape
  • Provide company financials
  • Allow custom searches

Cons

  • Accuracy of company information
  • Fundraising signals
  • Automatic sourcing

Likelihood to Recommend

Well suited for financial analysis and getting an overview over fundraising trends. Very comprehensive in that regard. Could be better regarding accuracy of some of the information provided such as employee counts, estimated valuations and some of the key financials that are provided. Some additional links to underlying data sources would also be helpful
