Planisware: Flexibility and Long Product Life Cycle

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We implement Planisware across a number of clients in several different industries: Government, Life Sciences, Manufacturing, Software development. Its key points are flexibility and graphical context. It can be reengineered when business processes change, and there is virtually no limit to the number of configurations for the graphics and reports which can be produced.

Pros

  • Adapts to business processes by changing the work process layout and use of alerts, macros for channeling work to those involved. This allows an organization to easily change metrics, business process, even portfolio configurations as they evolve over time.
  • Placing large volumes of data into a meaningful context based on flexible, user defined parameters helps management stay in tight control of organization performance and direction.
  • Allow users at client sites to be the masters of their own implementation by providing a wide variety of configuration options to the end-user administrators. This minimizes future costs of new system acquisition or waiting on a vendor for system changes.

Cons

  • Organization is still growing and needs to adapt to a rising volume of client needs for consulting, training, core development.
  • Major part of corporate oversight is from Europe and is still adapting to US work requirements, responsiveness, communication channels.

Likelihood to Recommend

While not expensive, it is better suited to larger organizations since the requirement for an administrator is not easily maintained at lower user counts. Although the more a site uses it "out of the box" without configuration, the less the requirement for a system administrator.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Planisware is being used as the authoritative source for R&D planning (timelines) and resource (money and Full Time Employee) estimation.

Pros

  • Apply resource algorithms to timelines
  • Enterprise wide and scalable

Cons

  • Not a great planning tool for the masses. Planning within the Planisware environment requires significant skill and experience and we've hired planners (not project managers) who can work within the Planisware environment

Likelihood to Recommend

A user needs to be clear on what the role of Planisware will be within the planning and reporting environment at your company. If the expectation is that all teams will use Planisware for planning, then you will need to anticipate a steep learning curve for those who are used to working in other planning tools like MicroSoft Project.
