My Red Hat Satellite Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it to manage patches, etc. on internal servers that are not directly attached to the internet. We also use it to ensure that every server in those various clusters get the exact same patches and versions, etc. This allows us to ensure that the servers are as identical as possible.

Pros

  • Patches
  • License Management
  • Dashboards / Visibility

Cons

  • Some things are confusing for new users of the platform
  • More dashboards
  • A more user friendly GUI

It's very well suited to supply updates and licensing to servers that are not connected to the internet. It's also great to have a single pane of glass for all of your servers. If you don't mind your servers having internet, you can achieve most of the features by just using Red Hats Online Console.

Extremely good at what it does

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We have several servers that require we stagger patching schedules as well as hold packages back and test. All this has to be done with no direct internet connection. Red Hat Satellite allows us this flexibility and more. It's truly been a wonderful thing for our environment.

Pros

  • Patch Staging
  • Customized Software Repositories
  • Version Control of Repositories

Cons

  • I woud love for it to provide the same functionality for non-RHEL OS's
  • Containerized Installation
  • Simplified workflow setup

Likelihood to Recommend

Red Hat Satellite works amazingly with servers that need more control over their packages. For one or two servers that you're just doing "dnf update" Red Hat Satellite is way overkill.
