Use Cases and Deployment Scope

When I was working as trainee for Syntrophos in 2015, for [one of our] customers we had RES Workspace Manager 2012 installed in the past. For our other customers we had installed a other user environment tool (VMware User Environment Manager).

After working some years in the support department, and working with both of the products, I got a new role (system/workplace manager). I had a bad experience with UEM, it was never as powerful as RES. It was more of a profile manager instead of a workspace manager.

At that point, I made the decision with some other colleagues to implement a newer version of RES for all our customers - Ivanti Workspace Control.

<p>Ivanti Workspace Control lets you control the whole workspace environment. With a user-friendly management console, everyone can manage it. Workspace Control is made by people with a lot of practical experience.</p>

<p>Every month they roll out a new release with bug fixes and some new features. Ivanti support is great too. When I report a bug, most of the time, they will resolve it within the next release.</p>

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It is being used to lock down profiles, manage folder redirection, print settings and user customization to the OS.

Pros

Lock down OS settings, network, and files.
Capture profile settings and make them easily accesible and fast to load.
Create and deploy registry changes for end users.
Capture user customizations.
Content Filtering (Web).

Cons

Some aspects of file security could be improved upon.
Learning curve could be reduced.
There could be a bit more documentation and guides around. sometimes we want to get something done but could use a little more granilarity on how to do it.

We run a large enterprise Citrix environment and we use Ivanti Workspace Control (IWC) to take over for GPOs and other systems to have just one place to go to change any setting we need to change. IWC is a one-stop shop for everything OS and user based. Currently, we rely greatly on IWC to achieve mission-critical goals.

<div>We manage the IT environments of a lot of customers and lots of them use RES Workspace/Ivanti Workspace Control.</div><div>It helps us manage the workspace settings from within one console, which makes it manageable and also easier to troubleshoot issues. It's also easier to set up test scenarios because of the easy access control.</div>

Pros

Manage user policies with a nice GUI and also place policies on application level instead of global to decrease log in times.
Set up test scenarios easier because of the easy to use access control, or even better turn off parts of Workspace Control for a test user, using Workspace Containers.
The security module makes sure users cannot use Cryptolocker viruses because of the managed applications option

Cons

It would be nice if the instant report function had the possibility to also show added users/groups

Likelihood to Recommend

I would use it in organisations with lots of users to be managed; we use it in Citrix environments a lot and it works like a charm. I don't know if I would use it in really small businesses with random PCs, unless you really want to have some uniformity and strict use policy.

RES One Suite is being used for:

<ul><li>Replacing slow GPO user management, replacing scripts for drive and printer mapping, user provisioning/auto-configuration of applications for first-time usage.</li><li> Synchronizing files to file shares and local to devices, adjusting default configuration state of applications for users.</li><li> Locking down processes allowed to run and subprocesses allowed to be spawned from root processes. Blacklisting and whitelisting of applications.</li><li> Locking down the networks that applications are allowed to access (and users). Usage tracking for application and licensing for purposes of reporting.</li><li> User password reset. User self-service portal for requesting resources or opening/closing tickets.</li></ul>

Pros

Managing user persona, capturing and applying a user's custom or specific persona when roaming or having devices replaced if storing settings in a central location.
Replacing GPO management for applications and users to speed up log in times.
Integrating with alternative tools such as Citrix, VMware, LANDESK (configuration management) and other application virtualization tools to ensure user persona or centrally manage a secure access environment.

Cons

Blacklisting/Whitelisting could benefit from a more centralized approach and automated way of tracking applications that get blocked so as to lessen the burden on users and administrators.
Support for multiple domains or environments, centralized management.
More intelligent reporting and easier reporting - means redoing the database structure and way things are stored (re-architecting solution).
Improved license management for disparate devices and a way for accessing mobile devices that aren't on the network for relay servers communications frequently (within grace period).

Likelihood to Recommend

It is very well suited for environments where users move/roam between systems such as VDI, hosted shared servers, or where immutable systems are in place (mandatory profiles or desired state systems).
