What is SAP PowerDesigner?

SAP PowerDesigner (formerly from Sybase) is an enterprise data architecture modeling tool, used to Build a blueprint of the current enterprise architecture and visualize the impact of change before it happens.

PowerDesigner allows team collaboration and helps support strong data governance.

Pros

  • Data modeling
  • Maintaining a consistent data dictionary through the use of the repository.
  • Custom templates for generating objects off of tables.

Cons

  • It took some time to figure out how to leverage the power of the repository. Some better examples in the documentation would have been helpful.

Return on Investment

  • Recently, the corporation started a big initiative on data governance and making sure we have the appropriate documentation. While other teams were scrambling, we were all set because we had our data dictionary and our many data models documenting the system.
  • Great tool for team collaboration.
  • Nice to be able to extend what the tool does through the use of custom templates.
