Previously Unknown Company Becomes A New Go-To!
Use Cases and Deployment Scope
We utilize the Supermicro Ultra product line as our main on-site backup device. A reseller recommended it to us under a managed service contract - but the hardware has been fantastic to work with. The device also has an IPMI interface which works similar to VMWare - so you can manage the device. Our setup has 40TB of storage running in a RAID 6 format. We have 10GB network cards on this device - so backups within the same building run tremendously fast. Branch offices are throttled by the bandwidth at each of those locations. We have been utilizing these Supermicro devices for three years now - deployed just before COVID. Still happy with their performance and functionality.
Pros
- Hardware reliability has been fantastic. In three years of usage 99.9% uptime - we've had no failures of any kind *knock on wood*.
- No loss of speed in the device even when having 6 different backup jobs running to it simultaneously.
- Pricing wasn't as absurd as other large storage devices.
Cons
- I honestly don't have any complaints! Haven't had any issues to condone reaching out to support - so I can't attest to that either.
Most Important Features

- Initial purchase price
- Easily deployed - IPMI is incredibly simple to get around.
Return on Investment
- It has saved me HUNDREDS of hours a year in re-running failed or missed backups with our previous system & software we utilized. It used to be a daily occurrence for me!
- Only takes up 2U of rack space - which is great as we don't have endless rack space in the closet we utilize
