SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is a good Linux for every case!

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Good Documentation, easy CMD Administration , built in Graphic UI Administration. The customer support is very great - responds fast and has a great knowledge. The knowledge base is also a real timesaver, shoutout to SUSE for that one. It really helps out in our daily work. Deploying SUSE was getting easier if you know about the generalizing tool that cleans up you images. But even without an image implementing and administering SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is really easy. We use SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for hosting our Linux infrastrucure on it. We also do use SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 4 SAP, which also works really well.

Pros

  • Good Documentation
  • Easy CMD Administration
  • Built in Graphic UI Administration
  • Easy manageable with Suse Manager

Cons

  • YaST has some different ALT + (letter) codes in every submenu
  • Sometimes it is difficult to change repositories

Likelihood to Recommend

We use it for every linux service we need to have running. It really works great and is easily manageable with the SUSE Manager, which helps a lot with the updating process. Although it is not stressfull on the CMD itself, it really does simplify things. Besides that, we are really happy with working with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

R6R! Robust 'n' Reliable!

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP with HA extension, for SAP, virtualized, and on-premise. It's a solid-robust OS for long time runs. Some servers still in use are SuSE 10!

This doesn't mean it is immutable, as with the new version, new characteristics (mainly to secure the OS) come up.

Pros

  • Robust. A distro focused in reliability that allows you to patch live without the need to reboot.
  • Complete installation options to fit almost any need.
  • Yast2 is a great system-wide configuration utility.

Cons

  • Documentation for advanced functionalities are not always well documented.
  • Subscriptions are not an easy thing to manage, but no impossible.
  • There are some issues related to too strict rpm management.

Likelihood to Recommend

It's a must if you're thinking of SAP. Stability and good support also are something to count on. Robustness is also a characteristic of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. With physical systems in the tens of terabytes range, we need an OS that can handle massive data collection.

A Superior OS Especially for SAP

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Originally purchased to run SAP these servers have now become the vast majority of our Linux OS used. Over the last decade plus we have continued to upgrade existing servers in place and migrated all applications we can to SLES. Even as we moved workloads to the cloud SLES is the preferred OS with very few exceptions.

Pros

  • Upgrade in place with short downtimes.
  • SUSE supported software packages for almost everything
  • Stable and high preforming OS

Cons

  • Like most software companies license audits can be frustrating

Likelihood to Recommend

SLES has been the only OS for our large SAP landscape in North America and has been adopted by the rest of our global divisions because of our performance. We have not encountered any scenarios where SLES is not a good choice. We only use other OS when the vendor will not support SLES.

Best run SAP solutions run on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

98% of our end customer workloads run on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server . The remaining 2% are those who need to manage Administrative server tasks visually. SAP HANA & all other SAP Solutions are Best Run on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server From what I recall one of oldest SUSE Linux Enterprise Server was in use for several years in our own Cloud, today the latest SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, SP is in use across multi public cloud and in various patching states. I can't imagine that any other flavors be even close to this success.

Pros

  • Seems Custom made for SAP workloads
  • Longest standing collaboration between platform and apps
  • SuSE for SAP works seamless on-prem, on SAP Cloud, Azure, AWS & GCP
  • Support for oldest SP of SuSE so our customers can run their business without fear

Cons

  • Documentation can still be enhanced
  • Repo upgrades may need to be more agile

Likelihood to Recommend

Its less likely a colleague would ask for Linux OS recommendation. SUSE Linux Enterprise Server is default choice for all hardware types, all processors including Intel Optane, all public cloud hosting options. There is no need for special recommendation

SUSE Linux Enterprise Server leads the market

Rating: 10 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I started using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server when Novell started to implement their products on it. Since then, I am a faithful customer. Seldom I met a Linux distribution of such a stability and a great support in the background. I never had to face any outages or interruptions. Also, the educational courses offered by SUSE are sound and extensive and keep our staff in a good position to work with SUSE. Only sometimes, when web application developers present their products to us, and need the latest packages for e.g. Python we faced problems and had to use packages from OpenSUSE - which sometimes leads to download and installation marathons for depending packages. But this got better starting SLE15.

Pros

  • Support
  • Updates and Patches
  • Education

Cons

  • faster updates for some packages e.g. script languages

Likelihood to Recommend

Web hosting, file and print services and container platform are great areas for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Sometimes, hosting web applications are a little bit tricky - but are working after some time.
