Trend Micro ServerProtect- Protect Storage from Ransomware

Rating: 9 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our client was facing Network threat issues like Ransomware &Trojan attack some of their servers also infected with WannaCry Ransomware. We discussed with various OEMs & suggest the client to go with Trend Micro ServerProtect, It protect their NAS (network attached storage) devices from EMC, Nutanix, HP, IBM etc. One of the challenge our client was facing that they were not able to get visibility of their storage devices as data centre has increased multiple times. Trend Micro ServerProtect you can get holistic view of security issues & by single console you can manage the integrated dashboard that includes reporting & altering capabilities to ensure you are aware in real time what happening in your environment.

Pros

  • Instant & complete visibility on your entire environment - as well as timely notification of any activities/events that are occurring
  • comprehensive & consistent reporting across channels makes it easier to manage-with customize dashboard
  • Dashboard provide visibility across environments physicals, virtual & cloud

Cons

  • Trend Miro ServerProtect required to improve to mange the logs collected from storage devices as some time false positives comes in picture .
  • Pricing is based on per user Or Terabytes Storage, but in-case client wants users based say 50 users that should be competitive rather than multiply by per users ,their should be Slab pricing .

Likelihood to Recommend

ServerProtect for storage users Standard APIs like ICAP ( Internet Content Adaption Protocol) & CAVA or RPC depending on who the manufacture is to provide access to this capability.

Trend Micro, an effective and lightweight AV agent, just beware of the Host Based implementation

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We currently use Trend Micro ServerProtect to provide AV/Malware Protection for our virtualized servers running on ESXi. These servers are utilized for all our applications and databases. Our clients use built in Microsoft Defender but we wanted something more robust for our servers. It addresses the varied protection needs based on the type of server it is protecting.

Pros

  • It has been very effective at protection. Nothing has gotten by it in three years.
  • It's pretty easy to install in agent based mode.

Cons

  • We originally bought this to run at the hypervisor level. It did not work well.
  • I had constant issues with the VMs required to run at hypervisor level.

Likelihood to Recommend

I have found that most AV/Malware protection servers have quite a bit in common. I bought this specifically to reduce issues that can happen with agent based AV on virtual servers. The host based setup was very difficult and even once implemented it was difficult to keep it running well. Support was not great. They really expected a high level of competency in the advanced features. In the end, using it as a standard agent based install was much easier to install and manage. It's very effective and the performance hit from running all the agents and during the updates is really minimal.
