DraftSight - Great product overall with a downside or two
Overall Satisfaction with DraftSight
DraftSight is being used as our primary 2D CAD application. It is used by all individuals in our Engineering Department. It is a very good and economical substitute for AutoCAD for the price. It allows us to (usually) open and edit .dwg and .dxf files from other organizations, as well as create our own files. It is relatively easy to use and intuitive.
Pros
- Uses/recognizes commands familiar to AutoCAD users.
- Creates sharp and accurate CAD documents.
- Works with plug-ins to expand functionality.
Cons
- Isn't always as stable as could be expected; crashes more than would be expected.
- Major problem: the professional paid tier is not provided with live support, but gets community-based support only. The enterprise tier is covered, but is way more expensive.
- Some plug-in providers will not honor "lifetime licenses" if a major revision of DraftSight is released that is incompatible.
- Significant savings over licenses from other CAD providers.
- Makes a good partner CAD package for a SOLIDWORKS user.
AutoCAD: Powerful and stable, but too expensive.
